Why Record Books? The 4-H program has a long his-
tory of record keeping. The focus reflects the importance
of this life skill in our daily lives. In 4-H, young people have
tracked their activities, events, profits and losses, skill de-
velopment and learning experiences and much more using
the 4-H Record Book. In addition to record keeping, the
4-H Record Book gives members an opportunity to reflect
on their year, measure their achievements and growth,
and set goals and develop plans to meet those goals.
What are Record Book Awards? Given to those
4-H members who submit record books to there club
leaders by the due date in June. Each month read the
intercom and look for the following symbol for record
book tips:
What are the awards? These are the pins and medals
that go on your 4-H hat!
How do I win in these categories? 4-H members are
eligible for record book awards based on the goals and accom-
plishments reported in their record books. Check out Imperial
County Record Book Forms for more Information!
What happens if I win? The respective Record Book
winners in each project serve as the judges, who not
only put together four questions, but also score each
competitor at Judging Day ,which this year will be
11/15/14. It is an event where 4-Hers come and test
their knowledge in their respective 4-H projects. There
can be a class for every project in 4-H including Large
and Small Animal Potpourri (a collection of one ques-
tion for each species). Participants can enter a total of
three classes and potpourri. At Judging Day there is a
“How to Judge” demonstration that is very helpful for
new members. Upon completion, a county winner and
numerous medalists are recognized in each project.
Where do I Receive these awards? At Achievement
Night!
What is Achievement night? Achievement
night is an event, held in conjunction with Star
Awards, that recognizes outstanding 4-Hers from
all over Imperial County for their 4-H Record
Book achievements.

As of July 1, 2014 drinkable water, without anything
added, must be available at all 4-H meetings, activities
and events. In addition, any 4-H fundraisers that include
the sale of beverages must include water as an option.
The health and safety of 4-Hers is a priority at all
activities and events. Drinking water is crucial for good
health and will help prevent dehydration and heat ill-
ness. Having water available ensures a healthy
beverage choice.
Water is the best option for rehydration when
participating in physical activities and ensures more
stamina to complete events. Water contains no sugar,
which helps ensure stable energy levels and reduces
fatigue. Water contains no caffeine, so hyper-activity,
loss of concentration, and possible behavioral problems
are avoided. Water is often-
times free. Choosing water
when thirsty is a natural
instinct, and should be
encouraged.

4-H All Star
Corner
The 2014-15 All-Stars have been hard at work
all summer long planning activities and
working on the “Plan of Action” Pictured left to
right above Bryanne Sanchez, Carlos Lopez and
Steven Johnson. They sat down in round table
fashion to discuss the details of their year
ahead with their parents and family members.
It was a fun filled night as the threesome made
dinner for everyone, including home made ice
cream! Imperial County 4-H All-Star is the
highest rank a 4-H member may obtain at the
county level. These elite members are role
models and leaders for younger members.

"Through the Looking Glass" is the theme for State Fashion Revue
2015. Incorporating participant suggestions, the two challenges for 2015 will be Cos-
tumes and Jackets. The Costume Challenge uses any technique, any materials, and any
pattern, with no project requirement. The Jacket challenge represents the sewing
project and has tiered requirements: Juniors make a jacket using any pattern; other
garments may be purchased or sewn. Intermediates make a jacket using any pattern
and one other garment for the outfit. Seniors make a complete outfit including the
jacket. The Traditional, Upcycled, and Consumer Science Purchased $40 will all return
for 2015. 4-H age divisions statewide for 2014-2015 are Juniors 9 -10, Intermediates
11 – 13, and Seniors 14-19. The first meeting of the SFR committee is on Saturday,
Oct. 4 in Stockton. All are welcome to join this dynamic committee and help design a
positive event. Please see the SFR website for more information.

Extend the Thrive of 4-H Many 4-H members, volunteers and staff are engaged broadly in local, regional and national work. They are recognized as exceptional teachers, mentors and helpers, who contribute widely to many fields of learning, and as participants in a wide variety of communities. 4-H has embraced the changing world around us, and we are leaders in those changes as we teach, learn, discover, create, build and thrive.
The California State 4-H Leaders’ Forum 2014 will showcase “101 Ways 4-H
Thrives”. Many of these incredible people will continue making the connections that extend the impact of their expertise. The Sacramento Crowne Plaza Hotel is the place.
November 14 – 16, 2013 are the dates. Join your fellow 4-H friends and make use of the many
opportunities to continue forging the connections that extend the impact of the workshops. The list of workshops will be available next month. Your ‘toolbox’ of methods, ideas and links will be refreshed and understanding gained when you participate in these workshops, extending your thrive tools. Through the educational, social and celebratory experiences at SLF 2014, CA 4-H has the opportunity to bring people together for collaboration, inspiration and sheer joy, then send them out to share the incredible treasures of 4-H and promote the 4-H mission. Registration information is found at: http://4h.ucanr.edu/Programs/Conferences/SLF/.
On July 31st 4-H kicked off the “Riding it Forward” Tour!
#RidingitForward and # National 4-H Council has partnered with former Biggest Loser finalist Joe Ostaszewski on the “Riding It
Forward” Cross-Country Tour. Biggest Loser fans will remember Joe as a finalist and fan favorite on Season 14, where he lost a
staggering 147 lbs. This is an exciting opportunity to promote 4-H’s connection to Healthy Living, and to increase exposure for
the 4-H Brand. Here’s an overview of what’s in store as an update for events starting today:
Promoting Healthy Living: This summer, from July 31 to September 27, Joe will cycle approximately 3,000 miles across America
to raise awareness that obesity is a serious disease and empower young people with the tools they need to become change
agents in tackling childhood obesity.
Engaging with 4-H: Joe will make 42 stops along the way visiting local 4-H clubs and delivering inspirational messages to local
youth and families. At seven marquee locations (Chevy Chase, MD; Nashville, TN; Little Rock, AR; Oklahoma City, OK; Amarillo,
TX; Flagstaff, AZ and Los Angeles, CA), he will engage with local 4-H healthy living activities including healthy cooking competi-
tions, nutrition quiz bowls, youth yoga and instructional seminars. At each stop, youth will be invited to make a pledge to healthy
living and sign their name on the “Riding it Forward” RV that will travel with Joe across the nation.
You Can “Ride it Forward” Too: Here are a few exciting and easy ways you can get involved in Riding it Forward:
1. Spread the Word through Social Media
