NEW DELHI, Sept 17:

India and China will hold theirfifth ‘Hand-in-Hand’ military exer-cise next month in the Chinese cityof Kunming, the engagement com-ing on the heels of a recent face-offbetween their troops in Burtse inLadakh.

Army sources said the exercisewill be held from October 11 to 23and India will be sending a detach-ment of soldiers from the NagaRegiment for taking part in thesame.

The ‘Hand-in-Hand’exercise isaimed at exploring useful experi-

ences, advancing pragmatic coop-eration and promoting a friendlyenvironment between the twoarmies, the sources said.

The first edition of the annualexercise was held in Kunming inDecember, 2007, following whichIndia hosted a Chinese detachmentas part of ‘Hand-in-Hand’ atBelgaum in December, 2008.

However, there was a gap offive years before a third edition ofthe exercise was held in China’sChengdu area in 2013 in which agroup of 160 personnel from IndianArmy’s 16 Sikh Light Infantry hadtaken part.

During the meetings, theChinese side was asked about thealleged violation by way of thebuilding of a hut 1.5-km deepinside perceived Indian territory inBurtse, the sources said, adding that“both sides agreed to adhere to nodefence construction along theLAC”.(PTI)
