Yo, Hippos!

As most of you are, I too, am upset that summer is ending soon. As the school year is ap-

proaching, many of us must prepare it, especially those who are Seniors. You might be

wondering why I’ve skipped the August issue - it’s because we just found out that we are

an issue behind! Woops! Anyways, I hope you guys have a great rest of the summer

while you still can.

Hello Hippos!

I hope you have all had a wonderful

summer vacation up until now. While

most of us still have some vacation

left, be sure you are beginning to pre-

pare yourselves for the upcoming

year! If you are a senior like me, make

sure you also get started on those

scholarships and college applications!

Remember that while summer is a

great time to party and have fun, you

should keep a serious attitude about

your oh-so important education. In

terms of Key Club, this summer has

been a great success! In just the

months of June and July (August not

included!), we as a division have

served over 500 hours of service - not

to mention the multiple fundraisers

that have raised hundreds of dollars

for PTP! I’m extremely proud of you all

for taking time out of your busy social

lives to support both your local and

distant “neighbors”. Thank YOU for all

you do! Remember to get back into

the habit of sleeping early so you’re

well-rested when school comes

around, and enjoy the BEEautiful

weather while it’s still here! See you in

school!

CLUB BUILDING By Tyler Ly

It has hurt me to see my club’s membership

count dwindle over the past couple of years.

It always starts out with large meetings but

begins to thin throughout the year. No

doubt, membership growth and membership

retention are some of the hardest things to

accomplish as leaders of Key Club. It’s a true

test of our determination, creativity, and en-

thusiasm. Hopefully, some of these tips will

help you achieve this feat.

START WITH A LARGE MEMBERSHIP

You can NEVER over-advertise Key Club

and your meetings. A good place to ad-

vertise is at your school’s orientation or

“Kick-off.” Although you have to get per-

mission from administration, this is a good

way to get most, if not all, of the student

body to see your CLUB. Another way you

can advertise is to make a new friend on

the first day of school. See someone you

don’t recognize in class? Sit next to them

and introduce yourself. Not only have you

made his or her day instantly better by

meeting you, but you’ve opened up a

pathway to making his or her life better

by introducing them to Key Club.

EDUCATE YOUR MEMBERS AND OFFICERS There are always going to be people who ask

“What is Key Club?” Officers and MEMBERS

should be able to answer with more than

just, “It’s a service club.” There are plenty of

service clubs and when asked what Key Club

is, officers should be able to leave a lasting

impression on students and parents, as they

will be exposed to the strong foundation and

professionalism that exists within Key Club.

KEEP THINGS CONSISTENT Having a repetitive schedule each meeting

gets boring, but that's not what I’m talk-

ing about. You should keep meeting days

and meeting location the same. > Meeting

days and meeting locations should remain

the same. Changing these details will

cause students to miss meeting, and,

therefore, not be informed of volunteer

events if they have no other means of

gaining that knowledge. A strategy used

by one club is to have the officers dress

up to remind members that it’s meeting

An event where Key Clubbers

from Region 1 and 2 get to-

gether to learn how to be-

come better members and of-

ficers for the future. Work-

shops are presented, ranging

from learning to use Pho-

toshop to learning how to

keep their school’s Key Club

running. In between the

workshops, Key Clubbers get

together to show off their

spirit through their mascots

and cheers. These spirit bat-

tles will determine which divi-

sion deserves the spirit trophy

at the end. The theme this

year is Superpowers of Ser-

vice! We encourage you to

dress up for the event! A

dance follows after all these

tiring workshops to release

the stress. We hope to see

you there this year!

If any of you are interested in participating in the TALENT SHOW at Regional Training Conference

on October 12th. Please send the video, or the link to the video to d11.cnhkc.ltg@gmail.com. The

video doesn't have to be the entire act just part of it so that there is an idea of your performance.

Submissions are due by the end of the month on AUGUST 31ST, please include the EVERYONE'S

NAME who is in the act and what division you are from.
