Based on the Do Now reading (“Stranded in Atlanta”), what do you think a “Food Desert” is?

WHAT’S A FOOD DESERT? 1.  Area where most residents have low

access to a supermarket 2.  An area where food is non-existent, not

healthy or too expensive.

WHY ARE FOOD DESERTS SUCH A CONCERN? 1.  Malnutrition 2.  Obesity paradox – •  choosing cheaper foods to stretch few $

• Cheap foods are usually nutrient-poor, calorie dense

• Increased risk of chronic diseases
