PrefaceDickinsonCollege’sCenterforSustainabilityEducation(CSE)wasfoundedin2008withfundingfromtheAndrewW.MellonFoundationandmatchingcontributionsfromthecollege.ThefoundingofCSEwascoincidentwiththelaunchofDickinson’scomprehensive,institution-widesustainabilityinitiative,withtheintentthattheCenterleadandenabledevelopmentofsustainabilityasadefiningcharacteristicofaDickinsoneducation.Theeight-yearoldcollege-widesustainabilityinitiativeencompassestheeducationalprogramsofthecollege,collegegovernance,campusoperations,campusculture,studentlifeandcommunityengagement.Itbuildsonaneducationalmissionthatemphasizespreparationofyoungpeopleforengagedlivesofcitizenshipandleadershipinserviceofsociety,ahistoryofstrongenvironmentalandglobaleducationprograms,campusoperationsthathavelongembracedandpracticedenvironmentalstewardship,andengagementofstudentsandthecollegewithCarlisleandothercommunities.AllmembersoftheDickinsoncommunityshareresponsibilityforthesustainabilityinitiative,anditscomponentelementsareguided,supportedandimplementedbymultipleofficesandprograms.CSE’sroleintheinitiativefocusesonstudentlearning,integratingsustainabilityacrossthecurriculumandsupportingco-curricularprogramsthatengagestudentsinadvancingsustainabilitygoals.CSEalsofunctionsasahubforthecollege-wideinitiative,connecting,supportingandchampioningotherelementsofDickinson’ssustainabilityefforts.

TheworkofCSEtodatehasbeenguidedbygoalssetoutinDickinson’ssuccessful2007grantapplicationtotheMellonFoundation,aswellasgoalsthatemergedfromthe2010summitChartingthePathforaSustainableDickinson.CSEaccomplishmentsduringthe2008–2016periodhelpedearnDickinsonnationalrecognitions,includingGoldSTARSratingsfromtheAssociationforAdvancementofSustainabilityinHigherEducation(AASHE),rankingamongSierraMagazine’stopCoolSchools,makingthePrincetonReview’sGreenHonorRoll,earningstraightA’sontheSustainableEndowmentInstitute’sSustainabilityReportCard,receivingaClimateLeadershipawardfromSecondNatureandachievingaSilverratingasaBicycleFriendlyUniversity.Lookingtothefuture,aprocesswasbeguninfall2015tocreateastrategicplantoguidetheworkoftheCenterforthecomingfiveyears.Theprocessresultedindevelopmentandadoptionoftheplanpresentedinthisdocument.TheCSEstrategicplanstatesanaspirationalvision,presentsachallengingmissionandestablishesgoals,objectivesandmeasurableoutcomes.Theplanwillbeusedtofocusnewandcontinuingefforts,allocateresources,providemetricsformeasuringperformanceandholdtheCenteraccountable.Itisintendedtobeflexibleandadaptable,allowingtheCentertorespondtoopportunitiesandchangingconditions.Itisexpectedthatsomeobjectivesandoutcomesmaynotbeachieved,ornotfullyachieved.Thismayresultfromdeliberatechangesinprioritiesanddecisionstomoveinotherdirections.Itmayresultbecauseexternalconstraintspreventtheirachievement.Oritmayresultbecauseofafailinginourimplementation.Whateverthecase,wewillassessthereasonsandmakeadjustmentsinourworkifandasneeded.ThestrategicplanningprocessisdescribedinAppendixI.PastaccomplishmentsofCSEaresummarizedinAppendixII.DefinitionsofsustainabilityandrelatedtermsareprovidedinAppendixIII.

Dickinson’sStrategicDirectionConcurrentwithCSE’sstrategicplanningeffort,Dickinsonembarkedonaprocesstodevelopanewstrategicplanforthecollegeasawhole.ThatprocessproducedtheReportonStrategicDirectiontoguidethecollegeduringaperiodofleadershiptransition.TheCSEstrategicplanhasbeeninformedby,andisconsistentwith,Dickinson’sReportonStrategicDirection.TheReportonStrategicDirectionreaffirmsDickinson’smissionofprovidingausefuleducationintheliberalartsandsciencesthatpreparesstudentsforlivesofengagedcitizenshipandservice.ItidentifiesthreethemesthataretoinformDickinson’smission:inquiry,inclusionandengagement.SustainabilityprovidesaframeworktointerpretandrealizeDickinson’smission,powerfully,byengagingourstudentsthroughactiveandeffectivepedagogiesininquiry,innovation,collaboration,serviceandactiontoaddressmanyofthecriticalchallengesofourtimes.Thereportalsostatesarelativelysmallnumberofgoalsformovingthecollegeforwardduringthistimeoftransition.SeveralofthegoalsareparticularlyrelevanttotheworkofCSE.Theseinclude:

• Increasingthekindsandtotalsupportforfacultyresearch,creativeperformanceanddevelopment;

• Deepeningsupportforinnovativeandeffectivepedagogy;• Completingnewstrategicplansforglobaleducationandsustainabilitythatgivepriority

toconnectionsbetweenthemaswellasconnectionswithotherdistinctiveelementsofDickinson’sacademicprogram;

• Increasingsupporttotheartsandhumanitiestoenhancetheirprogramsandbringthemgreatervisibility;

• Enhancingcivicengagementandintegratingcivicengagementintotheeducationalexperience;

• Identifyingandworkingtoremedyexistinginequitiesoncampusthatinhibitlearning,marginalizegroupsorindividualsorpreventfullparticipationincampusculture;

• Strengtheningthesupportivestructureforfaculty,staffandstudentstocreateamoreinclusivecommunity;and

• ConfirmingeffortstobecomeasustainablecampusincludingachievementofgoalsunderthePresident’sClimateCommitment.

SustainabilityatDickinsoninquiresintoafundamentalquestion:Howdoweimprovethehumanconditionequitablyinthisandfuturegenerationswhileconservingenvironmentalsystemsnecessarytosupporthealthyandvibrantsocieties?Answersarecomplicatedbyglobalizingsocialandeconomicinstitutions,transformingtechnologiesandagrowinghumanfootprintthatisdepletingresourcesandrapidlychangingtheEarth’satmosphere,climate,oceansandecologicalsystems.Thesedynamicforcesinteractincomplexwayswithcontinuingchallengesofhumanandeconomicdevelopment,foodandenergysecurity,health,injustice,poverty,accesstocleanairandcleanwater,environmentaldegradationandspeciesextinction.Respondingtothesechallenges,Dickinsonhaschosentomakesustainabilityapartofeverystudent’seducation.CSEsupportsthiseducationalmissionbyhelpingcreate,enhanceandconnectopportunitiesforlearningabout,innovatingforandpracticingsustainabilityinandoutoftheclassroom.TheCenterworkswithfacultymembersinallacademicdepartmentsandprovidesresourcestoassisttheminintegratingsustainabilityquestions,principlesandapproachesintheirteaching,scholarshipandresearchwithstudents.Collaboratingwithavarietyofpartners,CSEsupportsco-curricularactivitiesthatusethecampusandcommunityas

livinglaboratoriesforsustainability,bringsspeakersandeventstocampus,servesasaninformationhubforallfacetsofDickinson’ssustainabilityeffortsandmentorsstudentinterns,researchersandvolunteerstoassistwiththeseandotherefforts.

SustainabilityLearningOutcomesFourstudentlearningoutcomesforsustainability,developedbyCSEanditsSteeringCommittee,andapprovedbytheAcademicProgramandStandardsCommittee,givefocustotheeducationalmissionoftheCenter.Thelearningoutcomescallonstudentstodevelopcompetenciesanddispositionsofsustainabilitychangeagents,ableto:

• Thinkcriticallyaboutproblemsofimprovingthehumanconditionequitablyinthisandfuturegenerationswhileconservingenvironmentalsystemsnecessarytosupporthealthyandvibrantsocieties;

• Solveproblemsbyapplyingsustainabilityconceptsandprinciples;• Communicateeffectivelytoraiseawareness,increaseunderstandingandmotivateaction

forsustainability;• Collaboratewithothers,workingwithandleadinggroupstoadvanceshared

sustainabilitygoals.

Goals,ObjectivesandMeasurableOutcomesTheCenterforSustainabilityEducationwillpursuefivebroadgoalsovertheperiod2017through2021:

2. Supportandimprovelivinglaboratoryandotherco-curricularopportunitiesforpracticingsustainability.

5. EnableCSEstaffmemberstoadvancetheirprofessionalknowledgeandskills.Multipleobjectivesareidentifiedforeachofthefivegoalstogivegreaterspecificityfortheworktobedone.Oneormoremeasurableoutcomesarenotedundereachobjective,whicharetobeusedasperformancemetrics.

Goal1:Enableandenhanceacurriculumrichinopportunitiesforexploringsustainability

CSEwillenable,supportandincentivizethefacultyinofferingimpactfulcourses,programsofstudyandresearchopportunitiesthroughwhichDickinsonstudentsexploresocial,cultural,economicandenvironmentaldimensionsofsustainabilityusingapproachesfromtheartsandhumanities,socialsciencesandphysicalsciences.

AppendixIII:DefinitionsSustainabilityandtherelatedconceptofsustainabledevelopmentarecontestedtermswithmultipledefinitions.Thevarieddefinitionsreflectdifferencesinwhatpeopleseektosustain,whattheywoulddevelop,andthetimehorizonoverwhichtheyplanandact.1Thedifferencesgiverisetodifferentpriorities,prognoses,andprescriptionsforaction.Butmostdefinitionssharecommonconcernsforthefutureoftheplanet,itspeopleanditslivingsystems,whicharethreatenedbyagrowinghumanfootprintthatisconsuming,depletinganddegradingvaluedresources.Thefollowingdefinitions,whichareconsistentwiththeconcernsandgoalsinherentinwidelyuseddefinitions,areadoptedbytheCenterforSustainabilityEducationtoanchorsustainabilitylearningandinquiryatDickinson.SomemembersoftheDickinsoncommunitymay,andarewelcometo,contestthedefinitionsandchoosetoembraceotherdefinitions.Sustainabilityisthecapacitytoimprovethehumanconditionequitablyinthisandfuturegenerationswhileconservingenvironmentalsystemsnecessarytosupporthealthyandvibrantsocieties.Sustainabledevelopmentis“developmentthatmeetstheneedsofthepresentwithoutcompromisingtheabilityoffuturegenerationstomeettheirownneeds.Itcontainswithinittwokeyconcepts:theconceptof'needs',inparticulartheessentialneedsoftheworld'spoor,towhichoverridingpriorityshouldbegiven;andtheideaoflimitationsimposedbythestateoftechnologyandsocialorganizationontheenvironment'sabilitytomeetpresentandfutureneeds.”2Asustainablesystem(e.g.abioregion,foodsystem,city,community,business,farm,buildingorwetland)iscapableofcontinuingtofunctionandmeettheneedsofitslivingmembersoveralongtimehorizon.Asustainablesystemisnotstaticandunchanging.Itisdynamic,adaptableandresilient,changingthroughtime,absorbingstresses,adaptingtointernalandexternalforcesandrespondingto,reboundingfromandreorganizingaftershocks,allwhilecontinuingtoprovideessentialservicestolivingmembersofthesystem.Humanmembersofasustainablesystemsucceedinconductingtheiractivitiesinwaysthatmeetneedsforhumanrights,socialjustice,rewardinglivelihoods,ecologicalservices,materialgoodsandhappinesswithoutdegradingthecapitalassetsofthesysteminwhichtheyareembedded.Thesecapitalassetsincludehuman,social,cultural,financial,manufacturedandnaturalcapital.Sustainabilitychangeagentstakeactionsthatcontributetocreatingasocietythatissustainable–socially,economicallyandenvironmentally.
