The Urban Forestry Division of the Bureau of Street Services is the City of Los Angeles departmentthat has the authority to permit trees in the public right-of-way (parkway) and has recommended thefollowing parkway drought tolerant, root manageable, fast growing shade trees that don’t requirefrequent trimming or cause acute allergies. Please note that the Catalina Ironwood and the DesertMuseum Palo Verde are also included on the list of tree species in the Draft Crenshaw CorridorStreetscape Plan. Selection of the Palo Verde tree will require a LONG TERM commitment to trimmingand maintenance.
This will be the list of tree species selected for installation under the subject Proposition 1C andMetro Call for Projects grants unless it is otherwise modified by Urban Forestry.

Destination signage plays a critical role in the Project including the creation of a sense of
place, restoration, expansion and/or installation of art throughout the community.
Currently, the Crenshaw Gateway near the Rosa Parks (I-10) Freeway is a dissolute and
unwelcoming site. Gateways introduce visitors and commuters to communities in a
variety of ways with a combination of public art and signage.

In addition to the existing bust of Celeste King, the Project will add a bronze statue and
plaque for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and landscaping with sustainable plants and ground
level solar lighting at Freedom Square located on the southwest corner of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. and Crenshaw Boulevards and extend under the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Boulevard Bridge Underpass at Crenshaw to create the Freedom Square Living Room.

These photos illustrate existing Sankofa Walk sidewalk art segments in Leimert Park to be extended
on the west side of Degnan to 43rd Place, installed on the east side of Degnan from 43rd Street to
43rd Place and on the north side of on 43rd Place from Leimert to Crenshaw as a priority.
Scope: The sidewalk art is to be installed as part of the scope of work to repair the sidewalks in
Leimert. The art installation includes stamping the concrete with impressions of cultural figures,
shaving the concrete to create a meandering path that links the embedded bronze plaques in the
concrete. The plagues will be engraved with tributes to artist, actors, authors and other contributors
to the African American cultural economy. The Leimert Park Village Stakeholders have formed a
committee to select the artist to be honored with a plaque and will select the cultural figures to be
stamped in the concrete.

Specialty Project – LPV Planters
Scope of Work: Repair and replant Leimert Park
Village planters with sustainable plants and reinstall on
sidewalks in a redistributed plan. The Leimert Park
Village Stakeholders will select the new paint colors
and approve relocation areas.
Renovation Plan: Fourth year California State
Polytechnic University, Pomona students in the
process of receiving their Urban and Regional
Planning Undergraduate Degree worked on the LPV
infrastructure team and devised a renovation and
redistribution plan:

The Crenshaw Mural of African American Progress located at 50th Street is in
need of restoration necessary to bring it back to its original splendor anticipated by
its designer, required by the City, and desired by the community. This project
would include restoration of the 7,787 foot long mural, repairing the retainer wall
and installation of an information station and seating.
