Creative Coaching

Kristin Parone & Lisa RiceMRA Conference

April 7, 2017

To learn creative ways to share information with your teachers.

To learn about out of the box resources for creative coaching.

Agenda

Malcolm Gladwell, the author of Outliers: The Story of Success (2008), calculated that it takes

ten thousand hours of deliberate practice to master a complex skill.

This is equivalent to seven years for teachers working on a typical school calendar.

Research

Research has shown that educators want PD to:

● improve craft● help be more effective● allow time and

resources to implement new skills

● increase student learning

PD has traditionally been day long trainings, such as in

August, with possibly a couple of follow-up sessions

throughout that school year.

This kind of PD by itself rarely results in:

● a significant change in practice

● increase learning for students

Traditional PD

According to a study on professional development,

teachers need close to fifty hours of PD in a specific area to improve

their own skills and student learning (Darling-Hammond and

others, 2009).

As we learn from the research the ineffectiveness of

"one-shot" PD, coaches need to search for new and creative

ways to support educators.
