Objectives

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to: • Plan for the implementation of a competence committee

including membership, roles and processes in their own programs.

• Identify some practical tools for resident file review, documentation and reporting.

• Recognize potential challenges and pitfalls associated with the implementation of competence committees

Competence Committee Basics

• Purpose: Determine resident competence and progression • Decisions: Stage promotion, readiness for exams and

certification – MUST make decisions in the spirit of protecting patients

from harm • Take many small pieces of data to see the big picture

Competence Committee in CBD

• Reviews every resident’s portfolio AT LEAST twice per year

• Minimum 3 people • Make recommendations to RPC regarding

– “progressing as expected” or concerns – promotion – remediation and dismissal – individual learner needs – curriculum changes, program issues they see from the

data reviewed

Activity: Role of the Competence Committee

Discuss at your table

Table 1’s – Why? • Why should you have a

Competence Committee? • How does it/will it affect

learner experience (the learning environment)?

Table 2’s – Who? • Who should be on your

Competence Committee? • What are the roles on the

committee that should be filled? Why?

Debrief – Why?

• Why should you have a Competence Committee? • How does it/will it affect learner experience (the learning environment)?

• Detailed review of residents • Off-load high stakes decisions from PD to committee • Assessment guides learning so they help set the

focus of residents • Can see big picture of what curricular issues may

exist in the program

Debrief – Who?

• Who should be on your Competence Committee? • What are the roles on the committee that should be filled? Why?

• Chair • Variety of backgrounds • Community member • Non-specialist (other specialty) • Non-physician • Administrator • Observer

Activity: Reporting Tools

What should be reported?

• Who needs to see what? • Does everyone need to

see the same thing? • Design your ideal

reporting tool • What would you change

from our example (distributed later)?

Activity: Challenges for Competence Committees

Brainstorm Challenges

• Each person writes 2-3 challenges on a Post-it note • Group challenges into themes at each table to report

back to the group • 5 minutes

Challenges Identified

• Communication • Meeting efficiency • Pay/time out of clinical duties • Rotate residents • Subcommittees for large programs • Data management • Organization/Data Presentation • How to deal with “Hallway” feedback

Solutions Identified
