The Cook County Department of Public Health and its partner, the Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago, were awarded $16 million through the Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) grant program.

• TheCPPWInitiativeaimstoimprovethehealthofAmericansbyreducingchronicdiseaseand

promotingwellness.CCDPHhasbeenfundedtoworkwithcommunitiestoreduceobesityratesby

tacklingpoornutritionandphysicalinactivity.

• Thisawardwilladvancepoliciesandenvironmentsatschool,workandcommunitysettingsthat

supportindividualsandfamiliesinleadinghealthy,activelifestyles.

• CCDPH,whichserves2.3millionpeopleand125municipalities,wasoneofover40health

departmentsselectedtoreceivethisaward.

Obesity is the largest epidemic facing suburban Cook County.

• Duringthepast20years,obesityrateshavedoubledforadultsandtripledforchildren.InSCC,

about63percentofadultsand40percentofchildrenareoverweightorobese.

• Peoplewhoareoverweightorobeseareatincreasedriskofdevelopingchronicdiseases–such

asdiabetes,heartdiseaseandasthma–whichcancauseseriousillnesses,disabilitiesand

prematuredeath.

• Wemustactnowtoturnthetideagainstthegrowingepidemicsofobesityandchronic

disease.AccordingtotheCDC,ifsomething’snotdone,obesitywillsoonsurpass

tobaccoastheleadingcauseofdeath.
