COURSE DESCRIPTIONUsing a combination of didactic lectures anddiscussions, faculty members will present advances indiagnosis and treatment of macular diseases to fellowophthalmologists. The eleven hour course will discussalternative concepts for “dry” and “wet” age-relatedmacular degeneration, including a discussion on thebasic science behind the disease, diabetic retinopathy, idiopathic perifoveal telangetasia, ocular tumors, aswell as other vitreo-retina macular diseases.Information on new and experimental pharmacologicaltherapies, as well as new imaging concepts, vitreoretinal surgical instrumentation and applicationswill also be presented. At the completion of this course, participants will havea thorough understanding of the latest advances in themanagement of macular diseases. Participants will alsohave an increased knowledge of new imaging anddiagnostic techniques available to the ophthalmiccommunity, as well as the decision making processutilized by the course faculty in approaching these situations.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES• Discuss new imaging technology

(e.g. spectral OCT, Autofluorescence) in the diagnosis of retina and macular diseases.

    • Assess and evaluate the latest developments of vitreous, retina and macular diseases, as well as ocular tumors.

    • Assess and evaluate the latest developments in pharmacotherapuetic treatments for AMD and other macular diseases.

    • Assess and evaluate the latest developments in surgical trends, including small vitrectomy surgery and wound healing.

TARGET AUDIENCEOur audience consists of ophthalmologists with aninterest in the management of vitreous, retina andmacular disease. New information is best disseminatedthrough interactive lectures, discussions and questionand answer sessions.

STATEMENT OF NEEDThe leading cause of legal blindness in the UnitedStates is macular disease, a term which includes age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabeticretinopathy. AMD afflicts approximately 10 millionAmericans. Pharmacological treatment for AMD hasbecome a billion dollar business and healthcareexpenditures for ophthalmic procedures haveskyrocketed. In addition, with diabetes on the rise, millions more will need comprehensive eye care. Asthe U.S. population continues to age, it is important thatophthalmologists continue to be updated on theadvances in cost effective treatme nt and managementof vitreous, retina and macular disease.
