The National Arts Council (NAC)was set up as a statutory board inSeptember 1991 to spearhead thedevelopment of the arts inSingapore. NAC’s mission is tonurture the arts and make it anintegral part of the lives of thepeople in Singapore. Its vision is todevelop Singapore into a distinctiveglobal city for the arts. In workingtowards its mission against abackdrop of a changing arts andcultural landscape, NAC is guidedby the following strategic directions:

To promote the arts forexpression, learning and reflection.

To shape our cultural development through the arts.

To develop a sustainable environment that enables artisticcreations to entertain, enrich and inspire.

The Council recognises that the artscan enhance the quality of life,tighten social bonds and strengthenour identity within the communityand nation. To cultivate artsengagement from a young age,NAC ensures access to quality artseducation at all levels. NAC alsosupports lifelong interest andinteraction with the arts throughprogrammes aimed at the largercommunity. Singapore’s rich anddiverse cultural heritage is awellspring for artistic creation andinspiration which not only resonateswith audiences here but is alsodistinctive on the global stage.NAC focuses on reconnecting to ourartistic traditions and culturalheritage, presenting and promotinglocal content.

The main thrust of the Council’swork is providing building blocksand foundational capabilities for asustainable arts sector. NAC alsouses developmental tools such asgrants, scholarships, and otherschemes to help grow the talent

pool of arts practitioners and otherprofessionals such as theatretechnicians and arts administrators.

With the adoption of acomprehensive overview of the artssector, NAC is also able tounderstand its impact on relatedsectors such as media, design andentertainment. On the internationalstage, NAC collaborates with othergovernment agencies to promoteSingapore arts, in the bid to enternew emerging markets and cultivateinternational audiences. Arts awardsare given annually to artists inrecognition of artistic excellenceand to patrons in appreciation oftheir sponsorship.

The Patron-in-Chief of NAC is thePresident of Singapore, Dr Tony TanKeng Yam. The Council comprises16 members from the private andpublic sectors. It is supported by ateam of arts resource panelmembers who provide feedback andadvice on the initiatives of theCouncil.
