mente ridotto, quasi annullato: tutti questi fattori han no
han no maggiore difficoltà a identificarsi all’interno di
un’associazione.
Però abbiamo anche notato che quando fac-
ciamo vera informazione gli associati ci
se guono. Il nostro Flexo Day lo dimo-
stra coi fatti: l’affluenza è in aumen-
grafici e ATIF.

How has the Association changedover time?“The Association has nearly 30 years of life,
and it obviously changed since then, be ca usethe flexographic printing technology haschan ged. In the last 10/15 years it has im -proved a lot from the point of view of qualityand productivity; the market, GDO for exam-ple, considers it a more and more workingtechnology; furthermore, sin ce the produc-tion lots are reduced, flexographic printing iseven more interesting, because it containsproduction costs; the gap between gravureand flexo printing has been greatly reduced, almost cancelled: all these factors have ge -ne rated a great interest on the part of newcompanies regarding the press but also of
suppliers who have to follow a growing in du -stry. Therefore, all these companies have fo -und a point of reference in the association. The result of this growing interest in the flexohas been the increase of mem bers, who arecurrently fifty. Even if, unfortunately, contrary

cerchiamo di coinvolgere tutti i comparti interessati, at -
tualmente infatti si stanno avvicinando all’associazione
canti Cartone Ondulato), che abbiamo coinvolto all’in-
no nella direzione giusta, cioè essere di supporto all’at-

Being part of Assografici makes thedifference?“Surely Assografici has supported ATIF alot: the structure, the internal preparation, and their expertise have enabled us to gainmore visibility, because we can use the in -formation provided by Assografici that haveallowed us to expand more and more ourcontacts. The synergy that has been developed bet-ween Assografici and ATIFis really very im -portant. The sharing of our news is easierand more widespread be ca u se in the As so -grafici newsletters are al ways present infor-mation relating to our Association”.
What is the role of association inthe present changed field industrialcontext and how do you try toacquire new members?“Given that today flexo is a cross printing
technology, which involves not only theprin ting of flexible material, but also of cor -rugated cardboard and labels, we try toin volve all sectors concerned, in fact, cur -ren tly not only suppliers but also conver-ters are approaching the association. For us it opened a catchment area muchwider than ATIF had when it was born, alo gical consequence of the evolution oftech nology and its applications. With regard to the fact that flexo is across printing technology, I want to em -pha size that in the context of corrugatedcardboard we started an active dialoguewith GIFCO (Group Corrugated CardboardManu fac tu rers), which we have involvedin the ATIF Tech nical Committee, that nowincludes so me producers of corrugatedcardboard. To attract new members we must stressthe practical benefits to become an ATIFmem ber: keeping pace with technologicaldevelopments; the opportunity to meetand acquire information about norms; in -quiring about the results of experiments
carried out by the Technical Committee, with the participation of technicians andexperts of member companies and exter-nal consultants. We would like to let the industry under-stand that the involvement of the Tech ni -cal Committee must be constant and con-sistent in order to be complete, in or der topromote an exchange between pro vidersand users for mutual enrichment and toensure that the activities of ATIF are goingin the right direction, that is supporting itsassociates”.
Can you describe the relationshipassociation - education, which isalso a key factor in expanding themembership base?“The industry needs education, there is agreat desire to learn and to update, and sowe try to answer to these needs. It is clearthat technology exists and is available toeverybody, but the difference is the prepa-ration of the technician that use it, and witheducation we want to support users so
they can exploit it to the fullest. We offer training courses, because we wantto provide the know - how of our ex perts: wehave organized 5 courses in 2103 fromSeptember to December and the responsehas been excellent. The average number of participants in the -se base courses has been 15 companies.Considering the obtained success we arealready preparing not only other base co -ur ses, but also in-depth meetings aboutspe cific issues.Since the field of packaging and labels isgrowing, the same companies require skil-led personnel, and we offer a targetedtech nical education. Our relationships with graphic schools arebased on collaboration to improve flexoedu cation and we are willing to share ourexpertise”.
What is the role of your publications in your communicationstrategy?“The spread of the results of our practical

research has historically begun with the pu blication of the book ‘The guideli-nes of flexography’, very important work for us that required commitment andenergy, which was followed by a series of updates/insights for some argu-ments.ATIF will continue to work producing documents on specific topics, which arechosen according to market demands. From the point of view of the insightson the regulations we seek to make them more understandable: we want tospread more and more an accessible and non-academic knowledge. We havein fact increased the publication of the results of our experiments".
Any plans for the future?“We would like to develop more contacts and collaborations with other foreignflexo associations to share experiences, and may be one day real meetings ofassociations at European level will become a reality.Another our project involves the development of a counseling and troubleshooting service: ATIF experts will examine problems for which they will try tofind the solution; subsequently will be created technical files of good practi-ces that can be useful to all members.Another long-term goal is the possibility to have a ATIF technology center, toexperiment and test, and maybe even deepen the preparation of graphicschools teachers. To conclude I would like to stress again the need for discussion and com-munication, companies and people must not clum up and an association asATIF can promote this virtuous circle, especially now that the applications offlexographic printing are expanding more and more”.
livello europeo.

dato e Gerardo e nonno di Dino e Salvatore junior;
una tipica “bottega tipografica artigiana” sviluppatasi
negli anni 80 con il passaggio alla tecnologia
offset per giungere a cavallo del nuovo
millennio come protagonista di alto
livello nel mercato grafico del Cen -
tro-Sud.
La struttura produttiva si basa su
4 Heidelberg a foglio, tra cui una
XL 105 a 7 colori e una XL 105
a 8 colori, oltre a due web-offset:
una Harris Heidelberg 16 pagine,
10 colori e una Goss Sunday 4000
48 pagine, 8 colori. Il reparto stampa
è alimentato da un efficiente reparto pre-
stampa digitale con 6 postazioni Mac e 2
sistemi CTP, un Heidelberg Topsetter PF 102 e un Lü -
scher XPose 160”.
to sen soriale”.
mq e 60 dipendenti altamente qualificati; ciononostan-
menti tecnologici.”

gers of Grafiche Mercurio and visited theircompany in Angri (SA): an excellent opportu-nity to get acquainted with one of the leadingcompanies in graphic industry in southernItaly and understand why flexo is interestingthe management of Grafiche Mercurio. It is a family business, founded in the 60s bySalvatore Mercurio, father of the currentowners Diodato and Gerardo, and grandfa-ther of Dino and Salvatore junior. A typical“artisan printing shop” that developed in the
80’s with the transition to offset technologyto arrive at the turn of the new millenniumas a high standard protagonist in the gra-phic market in Central and Southern Italy. The production structure is based on 4sheetfed Heidelberg, including a 7-color XL105 and a 8-colors XL 105, as well as twoweb - offset: a Heidelberg Harris 16 pagesand 10 color and a Goss Sunday 4000, 48pages and 8 colors. The printing depart-ment is powered by an efficient digital pre-press department with 6 Mac workstationsand 2 CTP, a Heidelberg Topsetter PF 102and a Lüscher Xpose 160.
GLOBAL INNOVATION TO OBTAIN QUALITY“We operate in all areas of Southern Italy, from Rome to Sicily” - explains SalvatoreMer curio - “and our production includes pac-kaging and commercial printing for GDO (60-70%), labels (20%) and publishing products(10 %). The high quality of our printed pro-ducts is further enhanced by traditional andinnovative finishing systems, including hotstam ping and embossing, cold laminating andapplications of metallic paints, holograms andglittering, with beautiful sensory effects”. This is echoed by Gerardo Mercurio, technicaldirector: “We are a high-profile com pany withtwo factories for a total covered area of 5,500sm and 60 highly qualified employees; never-theless it is increasingly difficult to maintainconquered positions offering quality productsand services, due to competitors that aim ex -clusively to price cutting. For this reason, after a significant investmentin the second offset press, we are now in areflection process, before moving on to newtechnological advancements”.
FLEXO DESERVES THE UTMOST ATTENTION“We enthusiastically participated in theVie tri Conference, because we are convin-ced that flexo has a key role for packagingand labels printing” - emphasize Salvatoreand Dino - “FlexoDay South has strengthe-ned this conviction and provided us withsufficient elements to begin to understandthis market and the technology. ATIF orga-nized a very valuable event in this regard,a meeting point where you can breathe theair of the market that concerns this tech-nology. We are grateful to ATIF and its ma -na gement, that gave us, in our region anda few steps from home, a good knowledgeand study opportunity. We follow with great interest the work ofthe Association and we are also part of theYoung Entrepreneurs Group of Assograficiwith which, among other things, we plan toparticipate in the next study trip to Israel.During this journey there will be knowled-ge moments linked also to flexographicprinting”.

team, molto unito e affiatato.
me, grandi formati e ridotti consumi di colla
fustellatura.

tech nical experts, to form a beautiful team, very united and attached.“On the market people know me as Nan -do”, says cheerfully Eng. Today Oppliger has 12 valuable employe -es, the latter two newly recruited, but howmuch effort to find competent staff”.
NEEDS OF EXTREME LAMINATINGPROCESS: MINIMUM WEIGHTS,LARGE SIZES AND REDUCED CONSUMPTION OF GLUEThe market of sheet-sheet laminating has
evolved to the point that today companiesrequire absolute precision, where the edgeof the printed sheet is paired with no trim-ming at the edge of the cardboard, facilita-ting the subsequent die-cutting operations.“Zero register or as we call it edge-edge,abi lity to use printed sheets of lower paperweights (also 120gr), need to use less glue:these are the main demands that to day themarket is asking more and more frequen -tly”, says Ing Oppliger. On the French market, where they usuallyprint larger sizes than the Italian ones, Op -pliger has recently installed a 160x205 cmmachine, able to match perfectly with thetechnical features required by these mar-ket needs, a real springboard to the very de -manding American market where you workonly with very low weights, with covered wa -ve, and with minimal amounts of glue.“In collaboration with the Bobst, we have de -veloped gluing device able to save up to 50%of the glue usually used in the process ofsheet-sheet laminating, even less than 10gof glue per square meter, an ex traordinary re -

me velocità, garantendo sempre e comunque il massi-
dell’accoppiatrice, tutto avviene in maniera automatica,
gruppi come DS Smith, International Paper, Smurfit Kap -

sult, almost revolutionary for this industry. From a study carried out at a customer whohas installed an old generation gluing device,it has emerged that wi thin little more thanthree years, the company has managed tospare something like € 240.000 euro forglue! I can not imagine the savings you canget with the new device. As for our device “zero register”, althoughwe are not the only ones to offer it on themarket, we still apart from the competitionbecause our system is able to work at ma -ximum speed, always guaranteeing maxi-mum productivity. For example, in a small format, we guaranteethe accuracy of lamination to 9000 sheetsper hour”, adds Oppliger, continuing to tell usabout the 2014 technological innovations. The machine has a light of 160cm, but in thelongitudinal direction can couple she ets up to205cm and this has resulted in a technicalamendment also the stacker/pile turner, nowable to feed the machine without having todecrease the speed. The pile turner has a new bench changing
device that provides the same productionspeed, regardless of size and type of cartonused. The bench inserting device has beenimproved to the point that today the machineis easily manageable by a single operator. Also with regard to set-up and job changeof the laminating machine, everything hap-pens automatically, without need for ma -nual controls by the operator, with the ad -vantage of accuracy and productivity.“We have reached such a level of precisionthat today, if there are no problems with cor-rugated cardboard or for printing of sheet tobe laminated, we can guarantee the pro-duction from the first sheet, virtually elimi-nating all waste in the start-up phase”, addsOppliger, confirming data from large inter-national groups in which the machine is in -stalled successfully for some years.“Being able to enter as technology partnersin groups such as DS Smith, InternationalPaper, Smurfit Kappa is a source of greatsatisfaction for us, because we know howdifficult it is to propose new technologies incompanies at this level”.
A NEW FOREIGN TRADE NETWORKAND PRESENCE AT INTERNATIONALFAIRS TO CONSOLIDATE PRESENCEIN EMERGING MARKETSOppliger today boasts an extensive fo re -ign trade network, built after participationat drupa 2012, thanks to which the com-pany now is present in all major worldmar kets. “The local representatives are ope -ning us many roads and we support themand we join them in the decisive momentof the final negotiations; we are also over-seeing all the most important tra de fairsin the sector. Besides Drupa, that is a must, we will con -tinue to be present especially in marketssuch as the Far East in Europe where the -re is great demand for technology andwhe r e the packaging industry is booming”,adds Oppliger.

Centromarca www.centromarca.it/attivita-e-servizi/ studi-

Basti pen-

è istintivamente riconoscibile.

These dynamics must be taken into accountwhen trying to retain customers, as well asthe direct connection between packagingand key aspects like branding, customerexperience and product sustainability.
BRANDING According to Centromarca - an organizationthat represents several brands operating inItaly - the average Italian department storecarries approximately 50,000 differentpro duct choices. The typical consumer will
pick 50 items across a 50 mi nu te shop. This means that only one item out of 1,000will be picked. Of course con sumers won’tbe comparing 1,000 options for every sin-gle choice; they’re using a shortcut to ma -ke a speedy choice. One of the fastest shortcuts is bran ded pa -ckaging. The brand makes consumers re -call all the information they know about theproduct, what their friends, fa mily and pe -ers think and what is shown on advertise-ments or newspaper articles. Packaging plays a key part in the brandingprocess: it carries the brand identity th ro -ugh logos, colour choices and design –
think for example of the instantly recogni-sable pack of Barilla pasta. Packaging however is also a key part of thebrand identity. Taking the online retailerAma zon as an exam ple, normally, you’d beunlikely perhaps to consider packaging asvery important to an online brand; after all,
it never has to compete on a store shelf. On the contrary, Amazon’s use of packagingis notably excellent as Amazon focuses onease of use – transit packaging is cardboardwith easy to open perforations. PACKAGING IS NOT JUST ABOUT PRESERVATION, PROTECTION ANDIN-STORE PROMOTION. PACKAGING LETS BRANDS COMMUNICATEDIRECTLY WITH CONSUMERS, IN THE INTIMACY OF THEIR OWNHOMES, IN EVERYDAY LIFE, AND AT ALL TIMES OF THE DAY
PACKAGING E COMUNICAZIONE
In casi
spendono miliardi in ricerca e svi-
luppo: per ridurre la
forza necessaria per
togliere un tappo,
per inventare la a
soluzione perfetta

buon esempio.
prodotto e impatto sull’ambiente.

this out in 2009 with an attempted chan ge oflogo that immediately resulted in a 20%decline in sales. The New York Times sum-med this issue up with its headline “Tro pi -cana Discovers Some Buyers Are PassionateAbout Packaging”.
USER EXPERIENCEOne of the most important elements totake into consideration when packaging isconcerned is user experience. If a consu-mer is frustrated in accessing a product, orin case the package fails to open, the in -convenience may generate product waste,or, in the worst case, actual injuries to the
customer. When such circumstances oc -cur, customers will not easily return to thebrand anytime soon. In the food and beve-rage sector, user experience is a hotbed ofinnovation. In caps and closures alone, pa -ckaging manufacturers are spending millionson research and development: reducing therequired opening force for a cap, inventingthe perfect pouring solution, or working outhow to optimise a closure for on-the-go con-sumption. In the drinks category, Tetra Pak’s“HeliCap” is a good example. HeliCap 27 isa one-step resealable cap. Its cap heightand knurls provide good grip and a clearlyvisible tamper evidence ring that requires a
low opening force on the first turn of the cap- enough for the consumer to feel the tamperring breaking. It is designed for consumers ofall ages and ability. In simpler terms, it makesopening cartons easier and is helping thecarton to compete with plastic in the drinkscategory.
SUSTAINABILITY Consumers are more and more attentivewhen it comes to sustainability. Packagingbu sinesses need to find a balance betweenproduct protection and the packaging’s im -pact on the environment. But what exactlydoes sustainability mean? Should a packa-ging business prioritise renewable resources,or resources that can be recycled? What about the impact of weight or efficiencyin logistics? The approach advocated byPri ce Water houseCoopers is to focus in ste -ad on packaging efficiency, favouring aglobal vision and focusing on minimal re -source consumption in production, ef fec -tive product protection, transport efficien -cy, display efficiency and efficient after-use
disposal and recycling. This approach is driving a renaissance indemand for paper and board; materialsthat are inherently lightweight, renewable ifmanaged responsibly and both recyclableand biodegradable at end of life.
CUSTOMER LOYALTY IN TIMES OF CRI-SIS: WHAT BRANDS WILL WORK ON In this time of recession, many brands willbe thinking about how they can expanddemand and retain customers. The packa-ging industry will play a key role here.Businesses will work on re-launches and onthe development of new products, with newdesigns competing for attention on shelves. There will be a shift in materials, formats andpackaging innovation to make fruition easier. We’ll also see a renewed fo cus on packagingefficiency as end-consumers demand betterdesigns with a lower environmental impact.Packaging is not just a case but an integralpart of the experience that customers have ofthe brand. Betting on packaging is funda-mental to retain and attract customers.
PACKAGING E COMUNICAZIONE
carta e cartone è avanzata a tal punto da permetterne l’im-
piego in situazioni totalmente nuove.
competere sugli scaffali. Cambieranno i materiali, i for-

The 1970s to 1990s turned out to be a period of consolidation for the Pacefamily, during which the business expanded its customer base through a deep commit-ment to quality and excellent customer service specializing its activity in wine & beveragelabels, Annual reports and Portfolios, Brochure & Magazines and Packaging Material. This growth necessitated the business relocation to bigger premises reaching in 2004 theactual location with an plant of 2200 sq meters production space, 300 office space and3800 undeveloped space to cater for future expansion. The company currently employs50 employees on full-time basis dedicated to the 3 litho-printers 4/5 colors, the flexo-prin-ter the die cutter and the Vega folder gluer. The company’s firm commitment towards excellence appears to have yielded the desiredresults, as it justifiably enjoys an excellent reputation as regards quality and service. Its business strategy is based on a focused target approach, aimed at building competiti-ve advantage through specialization. This distinguishing feature has yielded a substantialmarket share, the maintenance of which requires a sheer dedication to customer service.
“Nowadays, a packaging company needs to offer the best quality possible and a holisticsolution to Customers’ needs” this is the Lewis Press’ Director idea of “a so-called Pa -ckaging Company”.After the relocation, interest was shown in the company by a pharmaceutical manufactu-ring firm of excellent repute. A healthy business relationship ensued, and a strategic deci-sion was taken to specialize in the field of pharmaceutical packaging materials. At this stage of the Lewis Press History the need of a new partner to share the above com-mitment was born. Confident of the already existing Vega folder gluer which has been run-ning for several years, Lewis Pace invested in the VEGA MIRA PHARMA equipped withMechanical Blank Alignment Module (MBA), the Braille Module, the Pharmacode, theBraille readers, the Glue detection and the automatic ejector for faulty boxes.“We invested in the Vega Machines, primarily due to ease of operation and the friendlyand professional manner of the company’s personnel” says Mr. Louis Pace. The model, manufactured in Italy like all the VEGA range, is available in three sizes, thesmallest 62, the range 82 and the bigger 102 cm. All the three models with same mini-mum and with several equipments to make straight line, crash lock bottom, double wall,4 and 6 corner boxes. It’s a modular machine like all VEGA folder-gluers so can be per-sonalized according to the various production needs.

Among the novelties, the Vega Braille is the pa -tented solution by Vega for the embossing in lineof the pharmaceutical blanks. The folder gluer is equipped with an additio-nal module which can have one or more em -bossing pulleys at 4 or 5 Braille lines. This module, available for all the folder gluersof our production and for other models alre -ady on sale, has reached such an evolutionphase that allows a very high level of embos-sing production, flexibility and quality. As a matter of fact, it is possible to em boss
the blank on all the flaps from the moment that the two pulleys are mounted on transver-sal shafts on all the width of the folder gluer. The solution allows a quality production at the same level reached in the die cutter permitting, bymeans of a simple adjustment, to adapt the height of the embossed dot at the thickness of theblank and at customer’s needs. The two pulleys, one on the other, couple the universal female andthe male clichés with the Braille inscription in relief. The standard writing used corresponds to the
Marburg Medium, the most spread in Europe. The cliché, composed by a steel alloy, is joined tothe pulley in few seconds without taking the rotating elements off. The cliché can be bought bydie form producers and the machine to produce them can be bought directly from Vega. The set-up process of the folder gluer for the embossing operation only takes very fewminutes since the synchronism of the two pulleys is controlled by the computer togetherwith the longitudinal positioning of the inscription to be embossed. The operator has onlyto make the transversal positioning of the pulleys (that is the choice of the flap of the blankto emboss), the insertion of the cliché and the normal set-up of the folder gluer. Once the Braille embossing is made, it is possible to verify its correspondence with the“master sample” of reference by means of optical control systems which compare theinscription and if it is different they send a signal to the automatic ejecting system.

con lo stesso formato minimo di
astuccio sono predisposti per
scatole lineari, fondo automati-
co, doppia parete, 4 e 6 angoli.
Si tratta di una macchina modu-
lare come tutte le piega incolla-
trici VEGA, e può essere perso-
nalizzata a seconda delle varie
esigenze produttive.
so luzione brevettata da Vega
per la goffratura in linea degli
astucci farmaceutici.
La piega incollatrice viene ac -
cessoriata di un modulo ag -
giun tivo che ospita una o più
cilindri di goffratura a 4 o 5 ri -
ghe Braille. Questo modulo, di -
sponibile su tutte le piega in -
collatrici in produzione e su di -
versi modelli già in commercio,
ha raggiunto uno stadio di evo-
luzione tale da permettere pro-
duzione, flessibilità e qualità di
embossing di altissimo livello.
È infatti possibile goffrare l’a-
stuccio su tutte le falde dal
mo mento che le due pulegge
sono montate su alberi pas-
santi trasversali su tutta la lar-
ghezza della piega incollatrice.
La soluzione consente una re -
sa qualitativa allo stesso livello
raggiunto in fustellatura per-
mettendo, attraverso una sem-
plice regolazione, di adattare
l’altezza del punto goffrato allo
spessore del fustellato e alle
esigenze del cliente finale.
Le due pulegge, una sopra l’al-
tra, agganciano la femmina
universale e il maschio con la
scritta Braille in rilievo. Lo stan-
dard di scrittura utilizzato corri-
sponde al Marburg Medium, il
più diffuso in Europa. Il cliché,
composto da una lega di ac -
ciaio, viene agganciato alla pu -
leggia in pochi secondi senza
rimuovere gli elementi rotanti. Il
cliché è acquistabile da pro-
duttori di fustelle come Tecno -
laser o la macchina per pro-
durle direttamente da Vega.
Il processo di preparazione della
piega incolla per la sola operazio-
ne di goffratura richiede pochissi-
mi minuti dal momento che il sin-
cronismo delle due pulegge è af -
fidato al computer e con esso il
posizionamento longitudinale del -
la scritta da goffrare.
All’operatore restano il posizio-
namento trasversale delle pu -
legge (ovvero la scelta della fal -
da dell’astuccio su cui goffra-
re), l’inserimento del cliché e la
normale preparazione della
pie ga incolla.
Una volta realizzata la goffratura
Braille è possibile verificarne la
corrispondenza al campione ma -
ster di riferimento attraverso si -
stemi di controllo ottico che con-
frontano la scritta e, se difforme,
inviano un segnale al sistema di
estrazione automatico.

system RobaFeed™ can be summed up as follows: More efficiency and safety at a lower cost. With this new development Robatech places the needs and interests of the customers in thecentre and submits once again proof of its high technical competence in the area of glue appli-cation systems.
Constant quantity of adhesive for an economically efficient productionThe innovative system is suitable to fill Robatech as well as other hotmelt equipment withgranulate from a separate container. Hereby the level supervision of the melting tank takescare of the control. The granulate is fed through a suction tube placed in the container hol-ding the adhesive granulate. The integrated venturi generates a negative pressure whichattracts and feeds the granulate. The vibrator fitted to the suction tube supports the suc-tion process. As soon as the set minimum fill level is reached, the level supervision trans-mits a signal to the control integrated in the equipment to release the filling cycle. Thesystem monitors the stock of granulate and the filling process reliably. Constant proces-sing temperatures are essential for continuous filling and represent a further advantage. In case of a nonconformity the process is interrupted and a corresponding message isreleased. Standstills due to an empty tank or overfilling belong to the past. Time and costsare saved in this manner and the production process is further optimized.
Higher operational and production safetyRobaFeed™ contributes decisively to an improved safety at work. Thanks to automatic fil-ling of the closed tank the operators cannot come into contact with the hot adhesive andsuffer injuries. Contaminants from the environment are prevented from reaching the adhe-sive. Vapours escaping from the fed granulate pass through an activated carbon filter anddon't pollute the environment.

The excellent print performance on all the machines conquered the audience and convinced threecompanies to sign a contract for as many hybrid flexo/offset XFlex X6 and ‘full flexo’ XFlex X4.OMET event featured two recent innovations worthy of note: the double unwinder on XFlexX4, which is available across the range, and the flat-bed hot foil and embossing integra-ted in-line on the XFlex X6 offset with 3 UV flexo units, 5 offset sleeve groups, cold foil onrail, rotary die-cutting and the ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ matrix rewinder. The double unwinder is a semi-automatic unwinding system for ultra-fast change of theprinting substrate; it saves several minutes in the changeover process and increases theproductivity and profitability of the machine with any type of run. For what concerns the flat-bed hot foil, the great news is the short time that was neededto OMET’s technical staff to tune it for work on the XFlex X6 offset, immediately obtainingquality level and register performance higher than any tests previously performed onmachines not OMET. The flat-bed hot stamping and embossing is characterized by supe-rior quality and this same quality is now perfectly integrated on OMET’s rotary machinesfor printing and finishing in one pass. With reference to JetPlus, OMET’s inkjet digital unit, the company acknowledges to haveconcluded the test phase on the first machine, which has already been producing for afew months at a label converter located near Lecco, and opens the possibility to order it
from Labelexpo Americas 2014 on. During the event, the machine was printing severaljobs demonstrating the simplicity of job and die-cutting exchange. The whole operationwas eased by the presence of Monotwin Cut, the die-cutting system patented by OMETthat secure high speeds of operation and quick changeovers since there is no need toreplace the magnetic cylinder, and whose adjustments are completely automated withrespect to both digital and flexo printing.Next to the new XFlex X6 equipped with offset with sleeves groups and XFlex X4, entry-levelmachine with superior electronics coupled to traditional, though revised, printing cylinders, OMETwas presenting Varyflex V2, multi-technology modular platform dedicated to the printing of flexi-ble packaging – here with the combination flexo and gravure - and one ‘full flexo’ XFlex X6. All the machines have shown great flexibility, which has always been at the base ofOMET’s technological choices. Work with an OMET’s printing press means to rely on theexperience of a company whose objective is to support the converters with modular, rapidly re-configurable and multi-application solutions and with productivity levels suitingeach customer’s actual needs. The desire to offer the greatest efficiency translates intotested and guaranteed solutions that offer all-in-one pass printing of the simplest to themost difficult jobs, quick job changeovers involving great savings, and the utmost printconsistency, for high quality and repeatable results.

A decision to re-launch aprestigious identity
Favalessa S.p.A. is an important company which is on the domestic and international market since1970. At first they developed their handicraft talent and subsequently they went through an indus-trial growth that led them in 40 year experience to innovate in their products and organize their activ-ities according to the modern standards. In 2001 they achieved the ISO 9001 Certification. Duringtheir evolution Favalessa Spa subscribed in 2008 an important strategic agreement with Massenzana,in order to combine their technical, productive and commercial abilities to those of this North Italiancompany which was well-known since the far-off fifties for a wide range of products, which coveredthe whole cycle of production of corrugated board boxes: as a result Massenzana Group was born, able to satisfy the needs of every customer in this sector: from the small handicraft context to the bigmultinational group by offering single machines or complete lines as:

This cooperation was known to us till some days ago, when the manager and Managing DirectorPietro Favalessa invited us for an interesting announcement. With undoubted astonishment we
learned about a new firm name, a new trademark, a new organizational structure and a new site. Thisis why we ask Mr. Favalessa some questions:
Q. - We talk about “M.C.M. Massenzana ConvertingMachinery”: Which are the reasons that lead to thissignificant solution?
A. - “It is the completion of a process that saw a progressive consolidation ofthe necessary competences in a sole organized structure to face the challengesproposed, to those who operate in this sector, by an international custom, which is becoming evermore exigent. Even the activities of a company, whichhad being supporting the business as subsupplier were merged into this newconcern. Therefore, nowadays M.C.M. employs a substantial group of expertand enthusiastic engineers. They a wide range of milling machines and a oper-ate within their own property building with a wide production area and outfit-ted offices. From the technical point of view the merger concerned a branch of the controlling companyFavalessa Spa with the whole Massenzana Group Srl and Fapemac Srl, giving to M.C.M. a strong indus-trial and commercial structure. The company counts among its resources fifty between technical engi-neers, workers, field engineers, electricians and software experts, now jointed in a sole team”.
Q. - Which results did you got from the initial agreement and what do you expert fromthe future?A. - “Since 2008 the further cooperation Massenzana Group and Favalessa has allowed the instal-lation of lots of Complete Printing Lines, Die-Cutting equipments and Casemakers in Italy, Germany,Spain, Russia, etc. with high-tech automation peripheral units. The products and equipments sup-plied to our customers have been designed, manufactured and installed according to our know-howand have shown to be strong and accurate made from the top: a technological patrimony that willbe further developed and enriched. The choice of a new name and a new trademark allows now toidentify M.C.M. without any misunderstanding with other assonant companies which are still par-tially active”.Massenzana Converting Machinery is a new-born company, ... but they are alreadyreach in competence and experience with a brilliant future ahead of them!

In addition tothe new MG cylinder, rebuilding PM 2 also in -cluded installation of a new head box withdilution system and pre-dryer sec tion as asingle tier arrangement.“The entire project was completed in anextremely short time frame”, says StefanKarrer, Mill Director Sappi Alfeld. “We havealready received very positive customerfeedback on the high quality achieved”.Founded in 1706, Alfeld Mill became part ofSappi in 1992. It has five papermaking ma -chines and an integrated pulp plant usinglocally harvested wood. The OHSAS 18001,ISO 14001, EMAS, ISO 9001 certified pulp
mill produces totally chlorine-free (TCF) blea-ched chemical pulp for its own use. The Alfeld MIll has also received the ISO50001 certification for adhering to energy ef -ficiency regulations.
PREPARED FOR THE FUTUREThe new papermaking machine delivers avery smooth top-side surface, greater di -men sion stability and lower penetration ofpigments. This improves the overall qualityof the grades manufactured on PM2, en -hancing their converting capabilities. The MG machine for one-side-coated pa -per will produce 135,000 tonnes per an -num at 1,200 m/min or 72 km/h.Rosemarie Asquino, Sales & Marketing Di -r ec tor, Speciality Papers Sappi Fine Pa perEurope, adds, “Among the first grades tobe produced by the new machine are Fu -sion, Algro Finess and Algro Sol. We have been able to achieve remarkableprint results, top dimensional stability andexcellent flatness which we know will helpour customers achieve high quality results.
The higher capacity guarantees customerspaper availability in the future”. Sappi Alfeld will continue to develop newproducts for the release liner, flexpack andlabel segment market utilising the new ca -pabilities and capacity made available bythe transformation of PM 2.
FACE TO FACE WITH BERRY WIERSUM – CEO SAPPI FINEPAPER EUROPE
Sappi, on RISI’s latest PPI Top 100 list , sitsat N. 12 with a turnover of about $6.3 bil-lion and producing 7.7 million tonnes ofpaper and board annually.
Did you see the rapid decline indemand for graphic papers comingand how has Sappi reacted to thechallenge? We registered a 6 - 8% fall in demand, butgraphic papers are, and will continue to beour main business, and of course we belie-ve that the demand will reach a balance.

RISTRUTTURAZIONE PM2
cata chimicamente totalmente senza cloro (TCF, totally
trasformazione.
La macchina MG per carta monopati-
nata consentirà di produrre 135.000
tonnellate di carta all’anno a una velo-
cità di 1.200 m/min. o 72 km/h.
Rosemarie Asquino, Sales & Marke -
ting Director, Speciality Papers Sappi Fine Paper Eu ro pe,
Sappi Alfeld continuerà a svi-

In fact, our colleagues at Sappi in the US feelthat the bottom has been reached there andthey are even talking of 2-3% growth on highend woodfree coated papers. The reason they are giving is that consumersstill have a lot of trust in printed advertising, much more than in online ad. Europe usuallyfollows what US does, so we are expecting abottoming out in the medium term future.
Why speciality papers market is so attractive for you? The Alfeld mill in particular has always dedi-cated to production of speciality pa pers forSappi, so it is not a completely new chapter. What is new is our approach, which is har-nessing the opportunities that are beingpre sented via all sorts of elements, for in -stance EU regulation – which for a change
is on our side - sustainability factors and cu -stomer preferences. Fiber based packagingand specialities really are beginning to gainimportance and the major brands are loo-king for a more reliable and larger capacitysupply chain. We bring that, along with ex -perience in the market and a very robustR&D support and expertise.
What exactly are the specialty products you are focusing on? The main focus is on release liner, label pro - ducts and flexpack. Our topliner productFu sion, launched around three years ago,is cutting itself a nice little niche and weare selling around 10,000 tonnes, but wehave high hopes for that as it is a 20 mil-lion tonne/yr business in terms of a mar -ket. But the really exciting area for us is the flex-pack market, where we are already quitebig, but where the potential could be huge. This is where a one-sided product is calledfor, because it has superb printability onone side, and then a rough side on the
back which will allow all sorts of other ma -terial to be glued or applied to it, for exam -ple metal foils or plastics. Flexpack is actually a great story for themarketing departments of Fast Moving Con -su mer Goods companies (FMCGs) as newde velopments like our Algro Nature allowthem to have a barrier on the packaging ofa well-known brand that could be compo-stable, which is shouting at the bu yer fromthe shelf because of its superb print ability, whilst giving the compelling mes sage of su -stainability. It really does ha ve massive potential. And this is why we have spent Euro 60 mil-lion on the PM 2 rebuild at Alfeld. This will give the freedom of choice tomake an instant decision on an FMCG pro-duct. Imagine an item on a supermarketshelf that is a runaway success printed onflex pack, and they need to order not10,000 tonnes, but 20,000 tonnes. They need the confidence to know that amajor supplier can deliver. That supplier isSappi Alfeld.
RISTRUTTURAZIONE PM2
brio.
L’Europa solitamente segue le tendenze negli USA;
basso a breve termine”.
luppo estremamente solidi”.
mercato.

Can you tell us more about therebuild project of the PM 2 in Alfeld?PM 2 was the only graphic paper machineat Alfeld, PMs 1, 3, 4, and 5 are specialityma chines, so it was out of place in the mill.So graphic paper production was shifted toone of our other mills in the group. For the rebuild we decided to go with Met -so (recently renamed Valmet) and a designthat incorporated a Yankee cylinder. It wasa fascinating project that took two years toplan just from a logistical point of view: theYankee cylinder had to go through numerousvillages, with all the permissions that entails. When it got to the mill we had to em ploy oneof three bigger cranes in Eu ro pe to lower itthrough the roof of the mac hi ne hall. The machine, which started up on October12th is the fastest speciality paper machi-ne for one side coated in the world runningat 1200 m/min. It is also uniquely purposebuilt for speciality production with all itsvagaries of differing drying demands. What it means to capacity at the mill, is anincrease of 135,000 tonne/yr of speciali-
ties, and it will produce all of our productsincluding Fusion and flexpack products.
So it looks like you are making theseamless transition from a marketleader in graphic papers to a market leader in specialities withthe start up of PM 2?Alfeld has actually been producing specia-lities for 100 years or more, and on the su -stainability front was one of the first mills inEurope to go totally chlorine free. However it is food safety that has becomea major issue recently, in fact it has almostbecome an obsession – even more so thanthe issue of sustainability. Making specialities as one would guess bythe name is a lot more bespoke. We ac tu -ally offer our customers a menu, for exam-ple: “Would you like an OBA or not? If notand you still want brightness but no OBAwe have an alternative”. Or, “Do you needcom postability?” We have a huge numberof choices, as well as the obvious sustai-nability angle. In the case of Alfeld we are
a 100% virgin fiber mill which means wehave had none of the issues of relating to mi -neral oils which we have heard so muchabout over the last couple of years.
What impact will the expansionhave on Sappi as a whole? Sappi will go from a 5% specialities busi-ness to 10% business and of course theturnover will increase overall.
One of the really exciting things about thespeciality market is that you are not hit bythe commodity type aspects of pricing aswe are on graphic papers. So if we are cre -ating a product for a customer where thereis no comparative product, pricing is muchless an issue. Besides the price of paper in the FMCG sec -tor plays a significantly smal ler role than inthe price of a printing job.

prime cartiere in Europa a produrre carta totalmente
senza cloro.
“Desidera utilizzare un OBA (sbiancante ottico) o me no?
to risolvere nessuno dei problemi legati agli oli minerali
menterà a livello globale.

How to convince the skeptics?“New tools, blades and accessories allowyou to increase the speed of the cuttingprocess. no enormemente l’efficienza produtttiva.
60 CONVERTER & Cartotecnica
The techinical Corner During the visit of the new site in Valbrembo, Marco Visani showed the plotter of theL3 series, configured for processing of sheets of corrugated and reboard cardboardwith high thickness. Visani explained the technical characteristics of this plotter thatallows you to cut and crease perfectly the sheet of cardboard from the unprintedside. Thanks to a camera mounted on the cutting head, the operator positions thesheet with the printed side facing up, in such a way that the plotter reads the printregistration points and their distance with respect to the outer edges, so that as thesheet is turned to allow cutting and creasing, the plotter knows exactly how to move.
The result is a perfect crea-sing, carried out on not-prin-ted side, which allows you toperform the necessary foldsto build up the packaging. The cutting blade of this plot-ter is oscillating and linear; inthe critical points the plottermanagement system let theblade raise and rotate, sepa-rating from the sheet, whilein the points that are easier tocut, the blade follows a conti-nuous and linear motion.
tamente come muoversi.
Basse emissioni e requisiti energetici ridotti rappresen-
tale. In tal senso la nuova sede Zund Italia sposa a pie -
no anche la nostra filosofia green”, dice Olivier Zund.

o scorso 3 aprile, in occasione della tavola ro -
tonda svoltasi durante il 2° Convegno Im bal -
laggio Alimentare: novità per competere – stam -
pa e materiali nel food & beverage packaging, or ga -
nici realizzati in cartoncino teso litografato. È nata come
qualità e sicurezza alimentare richieste all’imballaggio.
pose in amalgama.
E purtroppo questa
scelta obbligata a
volte può generare
frammischiamenti di
soggetti di stampa
nelle fasi successive

n April 3, at the round table that tookplace during the 2nd Conference onfood packaging: news to compete -
print and materials in the food & beveragepa ckaging, organized by I&C Packaging Aca -demy and COM, we listened with interest tothe statements by Silvia Garanzini, of the ho -monymous cardboard converter, who kindlygranted us an interview.
FACE TO FACE WITH SILVIA GARANZINICan you tell a brief history of thecompany, how and why it was born
and how it developed in the courseof time?“Cartotecnica Garanzini, located in Ma gen ta(www.garanzini.com) is a family com panythat for more than 80 years has been dealingwith the production of packaging and card-board items, realized in lithographed card -board. It was born as a box ma nu fac turer andfor many years has made luxury packagingfor spirits and textile, then it moved on to theproduction of board for games (Monopoli, Ri -schiatutto, etc.) and of school articles (fol-ders, binders).Following the market trends, the third ge -
neration has specialized as cardboard con-verter, and currently its main reference isthe food industry. In this segment is predominant the aspectof quality and safety, this is the reason whythe company has been certified BRC IOP.The company is also very attentive to theissues of sustainable development andcon sequently has achieved the FSC andPEFC certifications”.
How are you facing the difficulttime of crisis, and what strategiesare you adopting?“Speaking about food market you can defi-nitely say that it is the one that has under-gone the smallest contraction in volumeterms but at the same time has the stron-gest power in terms of price; and the in -creasingly urgent demand for cost contain-ment often clashes with the above mentio-ned requirements of quality and food sa -fety requested for packaging.Sometimes it is very difficult to convincethe customer that the price reflects safe-
guards that are essential to this kind ofpro duction. The foreign market, especially in northernEurope, is much more sensitive to theseproblems and to face the crisis it could bean excellent opportunity.Unfortunately, the cardboard product in itselfis really very poor and transport costs weighheavily on selling prices. For this reason youcan only take this direction with the supportof food companies that already possess anexport channel for their products.Since there are no signs of improvement inthe sector in the short time, and there are

re all’ultimo passaggio di produzione (piegaincolla).
In tempo reale dall’uf-
buon senso, qualitativamente ineccepibile e, ovviamen-
qualsiasi richiesta concreta, a progettare e consigliare

no preferential pathways to accelerate themarket, it is also difficult to calibrate invest-ments.However, the attention towards technologiesmust be constant, especially if they help toimprove the integration of the va rious stagesof processing to optimize the economics ofthe product and the margins that have beco-me too compressed in our industry”.
How did you approach the problemof fragmentation of orders?“It's true, the problem exists. Among the con-tingent difficulties in the current market un -certainty, it appears that the reduction of spa-ces dedicated to large-scale distribution logi-stics is altering the amount of purchase or -ders that are increasingly fragmented in pro-duction tranches of reduced volume. This operating way generates a high amountof start-ups/costs and the need for manyprinting jobs set with amalgam layings. And unfortunately this forced choice can so -metimes generate mixing-ups of printing sub -jects in the next stages of processing (die and
/or folder-gluer) and therefore also the riskthat the customer uses the wrong article inthe delivered packagings, with a high costs ofreturned goods and sometimes also withhealth risks for the final consumer. For this reason Cartotecnica Garanzini hasworked to develop an anti-mixing-up devi-ce, created internally in the company, to beapplied to the last step of production (fol-der-gluer). The device is small in size, andis working in a network project, integratedinto the company LAN in an extremely sim-ple way and with limited costs. It allows you to block the machine to thepas sage of even a single item with wrongcode, so it is also very useful in case of exe-cution of wrong and/or obsolete graphics. To restore functioning it is necessary to re -mo ve from processing the not conform caseand reset the device. All this with just onepress of a button by the operator of the ma -chine. From the office, in real time, you canalways check on PC which items (and gra-phic revisions) the production lines are pro-ducing.
This simple product has received conside-rable interest from companies that requi-red to solve similar problems, and then thecompany decided to market it, providingalso dedicated assistance for assembly inorder to adapt it to different productive re -a lities”.
In summary, what are your pluses, what diversifies your company andmotivates a potential customer tohave confidence in you?“The plus of Cartotecnica Garanzini is justthis: listen to the customer and offer a fast, logical, unquestionable quality and, of course, economic. The supplied product, effectively, has a very short life cycle and can not have anot competitive selling price. It should be added that the attitude to facean uncertain future and create trust in theclient must answer simple questions rela-ted to the beginning requirements. That is:- Are the raw materials used to manufac-
ture our products always appropriate
(quality and weight of cardboard, format,inks, adhesives , etc.) for their intendeduse;
- Are they also adequate to ensure sustai-nable development of the environment;
- Is it important for me to inform my cli -ents about how essential is to transfercertain information to consumers?
I want to emphasize that communication isa key factor.Cartotecnica Garanzini is always open toconsider any concrete request, to designand advise on the basis of the knowledgeand skills acquired over the years”.

incografia Empolese is a consoli-dated reality in the panorama ofphotopolymer producers for flexo-
graphic printing, with thirty years of history, characterized by a constant growth thanksto a policy of continuous investment. With the acquisition of the Maricc brand, another historic name in the field of flexiblepackaging and tissue, Zincografia Em po -lese, (at its origins the name was Zin co gra -fia Borgioli and produced zinc and rubbercliché), is now a comprehensive service
able to follow flexo printers for both flex i blepackaging materials and labels, as well astissue paper and corrugated cardboard. The company offers also a graphic designstudio that can follow printers and brandowners in their packaging designs and aservice for production of clichè for hot foilstamping.“Thanks to Maricc know-how we have ac -quired the typical mentality of flexible pa -cka ging, aimed to the pursuit of quality,ap proaching with the same philosophy the
corrugated market too. In the label industrywe have benefited from synergy with Nuo -va Gidue, thanks to which we delved intoall the secrets of label world. We are always open to collaborations andpartnerships with companies with whomwe can grow together”, notes Sandro Bi so -li, managing director of this company, loca-ted in San Miniato (Pisa), leader of a youngworking group but highly trained, tight-knitand extremely involved in the managementof the company.
HIGH QUALITY IS THE STANDARD,ALSO THANKS TO THE BEST TECHNOLOGIES AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET“We work to provide our customers withhigh quality products, which is essentialwhen speaking of cliche for printing of la -bels, but also increasingly required for pa -ckaging in corrugated cardboard. Moreover, when the evaluation parameterof a job is quality, the price has secondaryimportance, since the customer needs to
solve a given problem and to achieve prin-ting results at the top. We are always loo-king for challenges and we like to compe-te with the best players on the market.Having experience in all reference areas offle xographic printing also allows us to beable to serve the whole world of flexo, andwe do not depend on luck, more or less al -ternate in one branch”, says Sandro Bisoli.Zincografia Empolese in recent years haschosen an important investment strategy, which has positioned it at technological le -vels of absolute importance, from the de -sign stage, managed by the graphic de -part ment, which plays an increasingly im -portant strategic role. fortune, più o meno alterne di un unico comparto”, dice
Sandro Bisoli.
no”, dice Enrico Albani di Simonazzi, “e siamo rimasti
notevolmente impressionati da questa macchina durante
l’ultima edizione di Labelexpo.

previews and digital proofing systems. As regards the production of photopolymerplates the company employs analog techno-logies and two Esko digital systems, the lastis the HD 4000, which allowed the companythe final quality leap. The outfit is completedby two cliché mounting machines, one ofwhich is dedicated to the world of corrugatedcardboard and the latest one, a line for auto-matic washing of the plates, is the first instal-led on the Italian market by Simonazzi.
THE NEW AUTOMATIC WASHINGSYSTEM FOR PLATES BY SIMONAZZIOne of the latest companies that becamepart of the group of companies represen-ted by Simonazzi is Vianord, located in thehinterland of Nice and run by managersand technicians with proven experience inthe flexographic industry.“We represent Vianord exclusively for the Ita -lian market”, says Enrico Albani Simonazzi,“and we were greatly impressed by this ma -chine during the last edition of Labelexpo”.The line for automatic washing of flexo clichéis extremely simple, also as regards mainte-nance management, and it reduces greatlythe time required to process a plate. The plate is inserted and engaged by theope rator on the transport system that bringsit into the system, slowing it down almost tomake it stop in the vicinity of the rotating bru -shes that act on the plate without creatingmechanical stress. The photopolymer contactwith the solvent is reduced to a minimum, fora better quality of finished plate. The system has a modular design and al -
lows the management of washing, finishingand drying stages in a totally automatic way,at the end of the line there is a drying ovenwith 8 drawers, managed by a on-board to -uch-screen, thanks to which the machineoperator will provide the information neces-sary for the sorting of the washed plate inthe various drawers”, says Albani. The line installed at Zincografica Empolesewill soon be completed with just the inser-tion of the oven and finishing unit, to makeit fully automated.
Which are the advantages after installation of the new washing system?Bisoli - “We are very pleased with this la -test investment which has improved ourproduction from the point of view of quan-tity and quality, but also the working envi-ronment has been enhanced, with a consi-derable reduction of fumes and vapors. The plates with thickness 1.14 are washedin 9 minutes, those with thickness of 5.50in 14 minutes, with a production of 4/5
pla tes in 127x203cm format in a hour. In addition, the system has a self-diagno-stic system like those present in cars, thatalert the operator when a particular pieceis completing its life cycle, thus avoidingsud den stops of the line. Besides Vianord has remote access to theequipment if needed”.
Which plans do you have for the future and which are yourobjectives? We will continue our policy of technologyinvestments, also because it is the marketthat demands it, but today at ZincografiaEmpolese there is state of the art from thepoint of view of production process andtech nology. We are going to open an officein the north-east, in order to effectively fol-low the market that we already serve in thenorth of Italy. Frankly we are attentive to all acquisitionopportunities that could be interesting for us.We want to continue to grow and face withthe finest Italian printers.
ZINCOGRAFIA EMPOLESE
dinanzi a noi.
conclude Sandro Bisoli. n
