Connection to the Grid of AD Generation in the ROI
Eur Ing Carlos Galvan - Managing Director - Gridconnect
Connecting your AD generation tothe ESB owned network?
1. The connection process, are you planning to export power?
2. Connection types depending on generator electrical output
3. Our services
Connection process at present
Good news: you will be processed outside the GPA (Group processing approach AKA “gate system” CER/09/099)
Bad news: until the so-called “enduring access regime” is implemented, you will be processed in the same queue asThe 4,300+ megawatts of solar applications
Do I need to submit a connection applicationto ESBN?
• YES, even if you are not exporting into the grid
• If no export no application fee required, no queuing
• If exporting power, the application fee will depend on the output (MEC).Starting at €772 for 11<kW<50
Example: 500<kW<4000 MEC application fee €8,947
• Slightly different for micro-generators (6kW – 11kW). No application fee
Do I need a licence to generate?
If your output is less than 1MW you are not required to apply to theCER in order to receive an Authorisation to Construct/Licence toGenerate.
You are authorised by Order under Article 5 (1)(b) of S.I. No. 383 of2008/ licensed by Order under Article 5 (1)(b) of S.I. No. 384 of 2008
……happy days
Connection types:
• Most projects will connect into existing rural network (10kV or 20kV)
• Existing rural network (distribution system) overhead lines (woodenpoles)
• There are many connection types depending on the output of yoursite depending on MEC, available nearby grid access, etc
• There could be a few variations depending on existing installation i.e.metering arrangement, etc.
Option 1: <500kW

HV Network(OHL/UC)
A.D Plant
Local loads
IPPAssets
ESB side costs:Approximately €13k* forexisting demand site andallowing €48k for greenfield site with good gridaccess
*depends on existinginfrastructure, connectionmethod, capacity ofexisting lines, etc
Option 2: <500kW to be added to existingdemand installation

Our services:PRE-CONSTRUCTION SERVICES:
GRID CONNECTION FEASIBILITY STUDIES:-HOW MUCH FOR MY GRID?-WHEN? Timelines
Difficult to establish until enduring access regime is implemented
• SITE SURVEY (A “MUST” FOR EXISTING SITES)
• PREPARATION OF HIGH LEVEL DESIGN AND SUBMISSION OF NC5 FORMSTO ESBN
• PREPARATION OF SCOPE OF WORKS, SPECIFICATIONS AND EMPLOYER’SREQUIREMENTS
“YOU CAN SAVE THOUSANDS OF €€€€€ WITH A CAREFUL ASSESSMENT OF EXISTING ELECTRICAL ASSETS”
Our services:
CONSIDER THIS:1-Your electrical installation needs to comply with ETCI regulations, is your site safe and does it comply with regulations?2-Can I reduce my CAPEX/OPEX through an optimised electrical design?
Example:Your electrical losses can be minimised, this translates into thousands of euro over the lifetime of the project, example:Saving by electrical contractor reducing cable size (300mm² to 185mm² on a 50 m run) in 200kW outputinstallation:……………..approximately €250Value of added electrical losses over 25 year period with €0.10/kWh tariff:…………….€16,898 !!
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN:-Cable, transformer, protections and switchgear specification-Grid code compliance studies, earthing design, arc flash studies, etc.
IN A NUTSHELL…….
• Feasibility study considering interactions, grid capacity, existinginstallation, etc.
• Site survey highly recommended
• NC5 form submission including high level design
• Review of connection offer once received (enduring access regimewill fix current mess…)
• Preparation of scope of works and detail design
Thank you
