SIOUXFALLS,S.D.–RenownedcomposerandeducatorTheodoreWiprudisjoiningtheSouthDakotaSymphonyOrchestra(SDSO)foraMusicAlivecomposer-in-residencythatextendsthroughJune2019.

Thecomposer-orchestrapairingisoneofonlyfiveacrossthenationtoparticipateinMusicAlive,anationalresidencyprogramoftheLeagueofAmericanOrchestrasandNewMusicUSA.

MaestroDeltaDavidGier,theSDSO’smusicdirector,saidWiprudhastraveledtoSouthDakotatwiceforperformancesofhisworks,andtheSDSOisprivilegedandexcitedtowelcomehimintothefamily.

“TedWiprudisamajorcoupfortheSDSO,”Giersaid.“Heisacomposerofnationalandinternationalstanding,withexperiencewritingformanydifferentkindsofensembles,incorporatingdiversemusicalstylesfromallovertheworld.”

MusicAliveprioritizescollaborativeworkandimmersiveexperiencesforcomposers,orchestramusicians,artisticleadership,andcommunitymembers.MusicAlivehopestodemonstrate–throughactivepartnershipwiththeparticipatingresidencypairings–thepowerandvalueoflivingcomposersworkingatthecenterofAmericanorchestras.

Inadditiontobeingawell-establishedcomposer,Wiprudisaninternationallyrenownededucator,servingasco-chairoftheNewYorkCityArtsinEducationRoundtableand,untilFebruary,astheNewYorkPhilharmonic’svicepresidentforeducation.Duringhis13yearswiththeNewYorkPhilharmonic,WiprudcreatedandhostedtheiconicYoungPeople’sConcertsandtooktheVeryYoungComposersprogramnationalandtomanycountriesaroundtheworld.

“HewillworkwithLakotaandDakotachildrenonsimilarcomposingprojects,beginningthissummer,whichwillbeperformedbymusiciansfromtheSDSOaspartofourLakotaMusicProject,”Giersaid.

Wiprudsaidtheopportunityisveryspecialforhiminseveralways.

“Inthe1990s,IadministeredearlierorchestraresidencyprogramsatMeetTheComposer,thepredecessortoNewMusicUSA,alwayssecretlywantingtoholdoneoftheresidenciesmyself,”Wiprudsaid.“AndthenthechancetoworkwithDeltaDavidGierandtheSDSO,theacknowledgedleadersinsustainedengagementofnon-traditionalaudiences,andpriorchampionsofmywork–thisisadreamcometrue.”
