Join us and share your ideas
in improving State Highway 11 between
Kawakawa and Puketona.
The Twin Coast Discovery Highway is an 800km circular touring route of both the east and west coasts of Te Tai Tokerau, connecting key tourist attractions and communities.Work undertaken in 2016-2017 identified areas for improvement to the route to help grow Northland’s economy, through safer, reliable and accessible journeys.
The NZ Transport Agency is currently investigating potential improvements to State Highway 11 between Kawakawa and Puketona. Funding for the project is for the development of the business case and will require further funding for implementation.
Over the last three months we have developed a long list of options in partnership with hapū and key stakeholders. We are now seeking public feedback to help us understand which of these options are important to the local community and why.
The long list of potential options includes:
• A new roundabout at State Highway 1 intersection at Kawakawa and improved pedestrian connections
• An extension of the shared use path at State Highway 11 at the Haruru Falls Road intersection
• A new shared use path between Paihia and Waitangi
• Paihia Town Centre improvements
• Enhancing access to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds
• Delivery of the Te Haumi Flats safety and beautification improvements
• Safety improvements to the state highway
• Improved signage and wayfinding along the corridor to include cultural stories
• Investigation of improved ride share and public transport options
• Improved stormwater treatment to protect the environment.
