Climate Savers Overview
• Started by Google in 2007
• The Initiative is comprised of consumers, businesses, schools and conservation organizations• Michigan was one of two founding members from higher
education
• Goal is to drive energy efficiency by:• Increasing the energy efficiency of new PCs & servers• Promoting the use of power management • We can reduce global CO2 emissions from the operation
of computers by 54 million tons a year by 2010. That’s like taking 11 million cars off the road each year.
The Climate Savers Computing InitiativeJoin Us in Slowing Global Warming… One Computer at a Time
@
What’s really possible?
• 65,160,000 lbs• …of carbon emissions due to the electricity used by the University to
power computers and other office equipment each year
• $4.8 million• … cost of electricity used by the University to power computers and
other office equipment each year
• A 10% reduction would have the environmental equivalent of:• Saving 337,000 gallons of gasoline; or• Saving over 24 acres of forest preserved from deforestation; or• 529 cars not driven for one year
• …and could save the University $500,000 per year!
@
Our Vision
• Build on the University’s reputation as a leader in environmental sciences, recycling and environmentally friendly operations
• Have a significant positive effect on the environment by reducing the amount of energy and natural resources used by the University to support computing
• Seek ways to build community and save money as we work together to be better stewards of our natural resources
@
Our Approach
• A two-year project to implement a wide range of activities that both raise awareness and result in behavior change
• An innovative and aggressive communication strategy that will leverage campus, local, regional and national communication mediums
• Collaboration with existing University environmental activities and organizations
@
Our Team
• We hope to have participation from across the University community including students, staff and faculty
• We will rely on a set of volunteers that will contribute time and expertise to the project and help implement change within their units
• We will have a small core project team that is dedicated to implementing the project activities and supporting volunteer efforts

Laying the Foundation
Deliver a broad range of communications to build awarenessand to educate the University community
Provide a central location for purchasing info, technicalassistance, best practices, success stories, media resourcesand other information about green computing
Conduct project and media kick-off events to build enthusiasmand draw attention to the project
Develop purchasing and usage guidelines; encourageconsolidation of machine rooms; support design of anynew facility
Develop purchasing and system configuration guidelinesto help system admins and end-users minimize energy usage

Expanding our Impact
Quarterly lectures from nationally known speakers on topicsrelating to green computing and the environment
Allow units (or individuals?) to become certified by meetingA set of benchmarks/standards relating to green computing
Allow University departments to request small amounts ofof money to pursue innovative green ideas in their units
Provide IT support for Planet Blue’s building-by-building energy efficiency program
Provide departments data to help assess their progress toward green goals

GreenScholarship
Leading the Way
Sponsor/pursue academic initiatives such as internships, research projects, student competition and an academicScholarship (funded through green efforts)
Big 10Competition
Lead a competition among Big Ten schools relating toenergy savings in IT; use the competition as a way to drawnational attention to the importance of energy reduction in IT;A related alternative is to conduct the competition among Schools within the State of Michigan
RecyclingProgram
Build upon the University’s current computer recyclingprogram; Hold major annual “recycling” eventsto encourage involvement; Pursue expansion of programto include a wider range of equipment and personally-ownedequipment
