Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
T here are only two weeks to go until Easter, and it is so important that we may reflect once again on the mean-
ing and purpose of our Lenten journey, which in many ways symbolizes our earthly life as followers of Christ. We are in fact walking on a path that is supposed to lead us to a concrete experience of the Resurrection as a reality which in union with Christ may mark our daily life. Not by chance, on this Fifth Sunday of Lent the readings at Mass all speak about Resur-rection – not yet Jesus’ Resurrection, which will be magnifi-cently celebrated at Easter, but our own resurrection.
Christ himself has put in our hearts the ability to go beyond the “wall” that death represents. Our innermost self knows that life – the life that God has given us – is meant to be eternal. Therefore, even if we cannot “see” beyond death or “understand” what awaits us in the afterlife, we by all means cherish the supernatural gift of hope that allows us to desire and project ourselves into eternity.
We can’t deny, nevertheless, that so often our faith in the resurrection and eternal life is accompanied by many doubts and much confusion. Our resurrection indeed concerns a reality which goes beyond the limits of our reason and requires a constant act of faith in order to overcome the fear and distress that we may experience in the face of death.
Today’s Gospel – the raising of Lazarus – comes to our help through the “profession of faith” that we hear from the lips of Martha, Lazarus’ sister. Jesus says to her, “Your brother will rise again.” She replies, “I know he will rise in the resur-rection on the last day.” But Jesus answers: “I am the resurrec-tion and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live…. Do you believe this?” “Yes. Lord. I have come to be-lieve that you are the Christ….”
To believe that death does not have any power over Christ – that in him dwells all the fullness of God and eternal life – allows us to face all those situations that “kill” us even while we are still alive in our bodies. Long before the end of our physical life, in fact, we all experience spiritual death in so many ways and forms – death that is consequent to our sins.
It is in order to destroy sin and the spiritual death that sin generates that Christ had to carry the Cross, die on it, and rise on the third day. His Resurrection would not be a mere return to past life, then, but an opening for us to a new reality, that is, Heaven already experienced here in our spirit, while we are sill alive. Therefore, as we hear in today’s Second Reading, St. Paul wr ites: “If the Spir it of the One who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the One who raised Christ from will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit who dwells in you.”
Let us then ask for that Spirit as we get closer to the celebration of Easter, that we may experience the power of the Resurrection in any single event of our life, and so live here on earth as true citizens of Heaven.
With my blessing, Fr. Paolo

APRIL2,2017 ARCHDIOCESEOFNEWARK2017LENTENREGULATIONS1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent
are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.
On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast & Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5, 2017 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June 11, 2017. *Canon 920, 1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion as least once a year.
