Transcript of Chris Wakem On the Current UK Business Law Boom

UK  Experiencing  a  Business  Law  Boom  By  Christopher  Wakem,  London  Legal  Contractor  December  27,  2013    According  to  a  recent  article  in  The  Economic  Voice,  the  British  economy  takes  in  £3.5  billion  from  other  countries  (and  £20  billion  in  general)  every  year  through  the  business  law  industry.  UK  justice  is  in  demand,  with  buildings  opening  up  all  over  London  just  to  accommodate  the  swell  of  individuals  requesting  British  legal  services.  From  corporate  cases  to  high-‐profile  divorce  settlements  to  Saudi  Arabian  oil  disputes,  more  and  more  international  agents  are  interested  in  going  through  our  courts.  The  one  downside  to  all  this  success  is  that  the  poor  and  otherwise  vulnerable  have  limited  access  to  justice,  what  with  legal  and  civil  aid  getting  cut  and  less  lucrative  departments  getting  neglected.    But  still,  many  hope  that  this  legal  boom  of  sorts  will  benefit  not  just  London  but  all  of  the  UK,  with  340  thousand  jobs,  and  plenty  of  opportunity  for  regional  law  firms  to  snag  international  cases–with  all  the  demand  for  services,  firms  from  Scotland  to  Wales  could  help  share  the  burden.    The  popularity  is  probably  due  to  three  advantages  of  the  UK  legal  system:  low  costs,  respected  judgments,  and  quick  case  resolution.    Just  thought  I’d  do  my  bit  to  spread  the  message  even  further,  hopefully  bringing  in  even  more  money  for  the  UK,  and  creating  even  more  jobs.      Christopher  Wakem  is  a  London-‐based  legal  consultant/contractor  who  has  worked  in  the  independent  bar,  private  practice,  and  in-‐house  sectors.  He  has  obtained  law  degrees  from  the  University  of  Sheffield  and  University  College.  Mr.  Wakem  has  provide  advice  in  a  wide  array  of  matters,  both  contentious  and  non-‐contentious,  through  his  company  Lightbringer  Solutions  Ltd.  Chris  has  helped  companies  large  and  small  establish  risk  management  policies,  develop  start-‐up  procedures,  negotiate  framework  agreements,  secure  insurance  coverage,  and  deal  with  Anti-‐Money-‐Laundering  and  Anti-‐Bribery  and  corruption  matters.
