Transcript of Child prostitution Mary Lopez

It’s estimated that 200,000 children (mostly girls) are exploited through child prostitution; 3rd highest in the world.

The effects are life threatening. Millions of children are infected with STD’s, have abortions, attempt suicide and are raped each year-

Prostitution laws are weak and not enforced. sex-offenders have mild punishments, lets

offenders continue- no consequences.

Corrupt border officals, cops & government officals “paid to look the other way”.

Secretly government officials are FOR child prostitution because they get $$$

This whole cycle - makes a corrupt government.

POVERTY!!!; Prices range from $100-$1000, equal to 6 years of wages.

Profit brought into Thailand from child prostitution exceeds the profits of the drug trade, weapon sales, lotteries, or sports gamboling. (Unv. Rhode Island)

ECONOMIC EFFECTS

Thailand depends on this problem to bring in money for tourismKids no education.

1. Create stricter laws enforcing and creating punishments to sex offenders

..BUT again The gov’t looses $$, hard to locate

2. Education is key- so girls know this isn’t the only job for them, there is options!

…but giving everyone edu. costs $$ from gov’t

Development and Education Program for Daughters and Communities works in Thailand to prevent child prostitution.

Free education, vocational training, and accommodations for girls.
