Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering
that deals with the application of physical science
(e.g., chemistry and physics), and life sciences (e.g.,
biology, microbiology and biochemistry) with
mathematics, to the process of converting raw
materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable
forms. Chemical engineering largely involves the
design, improvement and maintenance of processes
involving chemical or biological transformations for
large-scale manufacture.

Mass Balance
Amass balance (also called a material balance) is anapplication of conservation of mass to the analysis
of physical systems. By accounting for materialentering and leaving a system, mass flows can be
identified which might have been unknown, or
difficult to measure without this technique.

Energy balancey energy balances are used to quantify the energy
used or produced by a system. This can be used to
build complex differential equation models todesign and analyze real systems.

Heat and mass transfery Heat transfer, also known as heat flow, heat
exchange, or transfer of thermal energy isthe movement of heat from one place toanother. Heat transfer processes, includingevaporation, condensation
y
Mass transfer processes, including gasabsorption, distillation, extraction, adsorption, drying

Thermodynamicy Thermo-dynamics is the subject of the
relation of heat to forces acting between
contiguous parts of bodies, and the relation ofheat to electrical agency.

THE ROLE OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERINGy Chemical engineers play a very important role in
making modern society as we know it from
creating simple products such as paper, plastic, rubber, pharmaceuticals, gasoline and cement.

Chemical engineers are also responsible for
designing programs, machinery and processesthat are used to manufacture their products.Performing a multitude of tests and analyzingdata, problems and engineering design during
the creation process is also key work of thechemical engineer.

y Chemical engineers play an important role in thecreation and manufacturing of materials that weuse every day. For example, advances in polymerchemistry allowed the creation of plastic, whichwe use for almost everything in modern life. Also, materials created by chemical engineers aresynthetic fibers.

Chemical engineers play an important role inpublic health. They study complex chemical
processes and materials to improve and prolongthe quality of life through the creation ofvaccines, antibiotics and pharmaceuticals. Anotherimportant area in this field is the creation of
medical devices such as prostheses andbiomaterial.

y The environment is another field where
chemical engineers play an important role. They help to create economical answers to ourwaste and pollution problems. Creation ofcatalytic converters, smoke stack scrubbers,
environmentally friendly products, recycling, and electronic vehicles are a few examples oftheir impact on the environment. Anotherimportant issue is the creation of processes
to increase the efficiency of our fossil energysources such as reformulated gasoline, andthe creation of alternative, non-fossil sourcessuch as solar, wind, water and nuclear energy.

In 2002, Chemical engineers were employed in33,000 different jobs in various industries.
Around 55 percent of all chemical engineeringprofessionals were employed by themanufacturing industry, chiefly in thechemical, petroleum refining, paper and other
industries. The rest worked in R&D and otherfields for professional (scientific or technical)services who were involved indirectly withchemical companies.

It is projected that the period through 2012 will be a
slow moving time for chemical engineers. But althoughthe total employment in chemical manufacturingconcerns is likely to decrease, R&D activities as wellas developing more efficient output from existingchemical processes are expected to be carried on bychemical companies.
In the manufacturing sector, pharmaceuticals are likelyto have the best growth opportunities for employees. Most of the chemical engineers, however, will be
employed in the non-manufacturing industry, primarily, the research and testing services industry.
Though no new job opportunities are expected to growout of these sectors, openings will be available due to
retirements and transfers of current employees.
