The name cat’s eye is derived from the French word “Chatoyer” that means appearance like cat’s eye.

Thus, due to similarity of appearance of this stone alike cat’s eye this stone has been termed as cat’s eye gemstone (also known as lehsunia in Hindi).

The optical phenomena of reflecting a beam of light beneath the surface of stone are termed as Chatoyance.

The cat’s eye gemstone is an excellent specimen of Chatoyancy and being high being used in jewelry items.

Chatoyancy basically occurs in those stones that possess the large number of parallel thin inclusions inside the stone also termed as “Silk”.

The band of light will generally appear at right angles to the length of alongside inclusions.

The wave of light when struck these parallel inclusion forms a band of light underneath the stone surface.

These inclusions are aligned toward the crystal axis and these inclusions can be named as hollow tubes, crystal or other linear structure that are present in the stone.

The significant crystals like hematite and rutile are well-versed in producing the specimen of cats eye gemstone (Lehsunia).
