Rules & Regulations for Safe Driving
Speed Control- Common Sense Speeding is a common cause of
fatalities and other types of accident. Never drive faster than weather, road
or other conditions safely allow, regardless of the posted speed limit. This is know as what?

25 mph- Business\Residential Districts School Zones 35 mph- Business\Residential Districts 50 mph- All other roadways 55 mph- State Highways 65 mph- Certain Highways/Fines Doubled

Slowing Down
Narrow/Winding Roads Intersections/Railroad Crossings Hills Sharp/Blind Curves Pedestrians/Driving Hazards Wet/Slippery Roads
Passing Make sure you have dotted lines and
be familiar with the road you are driving on.
All passes must be completed before the centerlines are solid again
When not to pass
Hills and curves Intersections Railroad crossings Narrow bridges, underpasses, and
tunnels Signs prohibit Vehicle stops for pedestrians
Driving too Slowly
A larger concern on major highways than on back roads.
NJ law prohibits blocking traffic by slow driving.
Keep to the right except when passing. Yielding the right of way.

Right Turn on Red- Must Come to a complete stop first. Watch for No Turn On Red signs. NJ is a “Right on Red” State.
When making turns you must use your turn signals 100 feet in advance.
Rights and Lefts- Don’t cut into other lanes.
When two cars are making left turns always turn front bumper to front bumper.

Driving Towards a Curve??
SLOW DOWN BEFORE ENTERING THE CURVE!!
Remember…Your car will want to go straight when you are
driving into a curve…
Left Turn
Right Turns
Circle Intersections
Common Sense must prevail at all times.
Historical traffic patterns prevail.
*Usually cars in the circle have the right of way.
Stopping Regulations
Never attempt to beat a traffic light change.
When you must stop- Intersections, red lights, officer orders, yielding situations, school buses ,alleys and side streets, open bridges, pedestrians.
Stopping at Railroad Crossings Flashing lights and Crossbucks. Stop 15 feet from crossing when lights
are flashing. If your car stalls on the tracks what do
you do?
Stopping for Buses Stop 25 feet in front and back of the buses when
the lights are flashing red. Bus stopped on a highway with a median- slow to
10 mph and continue. If bus is stopped in front of school, slow to 10 MPH

Flashing Red Lights- Yield to pedestrians (watch out for children)
No pedestrians - stop and drive past at no faster than 15 mph.
Emergency Vehicles Steer to extreme right of road and stop as
soon as possible. Once vehicle passes keep 300 feet behind it.
NJ “Move Over” Law- move to an adjacent lane if possible for emergency vehicles

Lights Headlights must be used 1\2 hour after
sunset and 1\2\ hour before sunrise and also during rain, snow and ice, storms, and when fog is present.
Must be used when visibility is less than 500 feet.
Bright and Dim- What’s the difference? Overhead lights- should not be used
when car is in motion.

Littering
$1000 fine for throwing dangerous objects out of your window. If car is moving your license could be suspended.
Cell Phones- July 1, 2004 May not use a hand held wireless
phone on any public road. Fine is between $100 and $250 for
breaking this law.
