It all started with me taking Furniture 1 at OCAD University. A piece of furniture found in garbage had to be taken apart in order to have an understanding of it both mechanically and also possibly philosophically. The rest is the journey of Chair de Banel, and me trying to make sense of it all.

This chair was given to me by my roommate to compensate for the one he broke and it was my starting point.

Starting Point

“Why was an indoor chair outside? What is it doing at a streetcar stop? Why was this person sitting on it? Is she mentally sane? Should we be worried or cautious of this person??”

One should always be cautious about people named Zeynep however, in this case, they did not know my name so this probably had nothing to do with them questioning my sanity.

It was nice and warm out when I decided to take the chair to its last journey before it’s big makeover. I was waiting for the streetcar when I noticed people looking at me in a funny questioning way. What was I doing? I was just peacefully sitting on my chair. It wasn’t outrageous, but certainly, it was enough to create confusion in people’s minds. I could almost see these questions floating above these people’s heads;

What is a Chair?

This accidental social experiment made me question the meaning of a chair. I placed it infront of things, in and on things to observe its relationship with its environment.

Did it change it’s meaning or change my perception of what a chair is? It certainly did.

Is a chair a barricade? it it a plant? Or a vehicle perhaps?

Is a chair a child or a child at play? Or perhaps it is a part of a playground?

What is a chair?

Wait, it is a part of the park! Or is it? It is a coat hanger! Or a stool? Or a place where your bags and your clothes rest?

What is a chair?

The Make Over

Now I am even more confused about what a chair is, let’s turn this into a real chowder.

Let’s physically break this into pieces to see what it is that makes a chair- a chair! I also need to see where things failed, and /or worked really well!

Time to figure out how to implement what I learnt so far. But do I even have to? Can this be it’s own thing? Can I leave it all behind and pretend it never happened? Decisions, decisions!

The Make Over

It’ now time to synthesize all the things I have learnt so far, in a fun manner

The Make Over

The Client

Turns out the sculpture piece that I was instructed to build, was not just for the fun of it.

The remains of my chair had a make over, and came back as a client!

Mock ups

I couldn’t just use the sketches, I needed something tangible and digital before I could go ahead and get my hands dirty.
