Chapter 13 Section 4

Energy Resources

• An energy resource is a natural resource that can converted into other forms of energy to do useful work.

QuickTime™ and aTIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor

are needed to see this picture.

Uses of fossil fuels.

Burning coal is a common way to generate electricity.

Gasoline, wax, and plastics are made from petroleum (another

fossil fuel).

Converting Fossil Fuels.

• Electric generators convert the chemical energy in fossil fuels into electrical energy.

Renewable Resources

• Renewable resources can be replaced.

• Solar, Water, Wind and Geothermal energy are examples.

• Organic matter, such as plants, wood, and waste that can be burned to release energy is biomass.

Nonrenewable Resources

• A nonrenewable resource cannot be replaced once it is used.

• Fossil fuels are energy resources that formed from buried remains of plants and animals.
