Bridge bearings support structures at a constant elevation, carrying forces from the superstructure into thesubstructure and allowing necessary superstructure motions to take place. The same principles apply to all typesof structure where forces are exerted. CCL advanced solutions help create innovative bearings that anticipateand counteract these forces.
Irreversible rotations and translations are due to the effects of concrete shrinkage, settlement, construction, dead and superimposed dead loads or any similar effects and will occur only once.
Reversible rotations and translations are due to the effects of temperature, wind and live loads and will occur repeatedly.
DOWNWARD FORCE
Acts vertically through the centre of the bearing.
LONGITUDINAL FORCE
Forces, rotations and translations actalong the bridge main centre line.
TRANSVERSE FORCE
Forces, rotations and translations actperpendicular to the bridge main centre line.
UPLIFTING FORCES
Acts vertically upwards due to vibration, design of bridge or the weight of the superstructure that does not provide significant compressive load.

bearing types...
CCL design bespoke bearings to exacting standards. Most structures require a mixture of bearing typesand we advise our clients to contact us at an early stage to ensure we design bearings that perfectlymatch the structure requirements. Our bearings are made to order to conform to all relevant local andinternational regulations and standards. Any of the mechanical bearings can be converted to uplift type.
In partnership with the client, CCL can design a unique bearing that meets all specifications.
PF FIXED POT BEARINGResists vertical load and provides restraint in all horizontal directions.
The projecting piston of the top plate is fully retained by the metal pot of thebottom plate to provide full restraint in the horizontal plane. The deformationof the elastomeric disc allows multi-directional rotation to take place.
PS FREE SLIDING POT BEARINGResists vertical load and allows horizontal movements and rotations.
Within the base plate a rocker is fully retained in the pot. This rocker has alubricated, dimpled PTFE disc which slides against the stainless steel plate. The stainless steel plate is fitted to the machined top plate allowing freehorizontal movements between the two sections of the bearing.
PG GUIDED SLIDING POT BEARINGResists vertical load and provides perpendicular restraint.
In the base plate a rocker is retained in the pot with a lubricated, dimpled PTFE disc toslide against the stainless steel plate. The stainless steel plate is fitted to the machinedtop plate between two guide rails, which resist the horizontal load in one direction.Horizontal movement occurs along the length of the guide rails. The deformation of theelastomeric disc under the rocker plate allows multi-directional rotation to take place.
5
UG UNIGUIDE BEARINGDoes not cater for vertical load but provides undirectional movement andresistant to the horizontal load in the perpendicular direction.
Elastrometric bearings would generally be positioned next to the Uniguide Bearing to take up the vertical load.
LR ELASTOMERIC BEARINGResists vertical load and provides horizontal movements and rotations.
Caters for vertical load where movement is controlled by shear deflection androtation is by angular deformation. Steel reinforced plates are vulcanised inalternating rubber layers which are then enclosed by a rubber outer layer, increasing the bearing resistance to ageing caused by external influences, inparticular ozone.
PR/SR PLAIN PAD BEARING AND STRIPResists low vertical load and allows small movements.
Non-reinforced Elastrometric Pads and Strips are used where low loads andsmall movements and rotations are expected. They are the simplest type ofbearing, readily available and easy to install.
BESPOKE SPECIAL BEARINGSIn addition to the standard range of mechanical bearings, CCL design and manufacture bearings to suit customer requirements; oftenrecommending types of materials or corrosion protection for highly corrosive areas such as marine locations, or heavily polluted industrial environments.
FP FIXED PIN BEARINGCaters for vertical load but resists horizontal loads in any directions.
Elastrometric bearings would generally be positioned next to the Fixed Pin Bearing to take up the vertical load.
“ Each and every CCL bearing we design is unique – not picked from a predetermined table. Anything lessthan bespoke design is a compromise.”
Continual investment in design and integratedmanufacture means bespoke has become standard
CCL design...
From ideas to installation…Continual investment in design and integrated manufacture means bespoke hasbecome standard at CCL. CCL design team members are all experienced designengineers, highly knowledgeable in practical engineering and industry practice. Our engineers can adapt their design skills for special projects and specificnational codes. Years of extensive experience mean we understand thatbearings design and supply is critical if a project is to be delivered on time and to specification. The CCL team draws upon skills from across the Groupdelivering bespoke solutions that stand the test of time.
Our Design PhilosophyEach project is unique and we continue to invest in the latest technology, training and materials to make this a reality. Our design team are from bothstructural and mechanical engineering backgrounds, allowing us to combine thestructural design needs of the client with a bearing that can be optimised interms of manufacture and cost. We encourage all our clients to involve CCL at an early stage so we can give guidance on selection of bearings and theirinteraction with the rest of the structure.
Our Design ProcessCCL will commence initial designs based on the information received from clientsor alternatively from site visits on remedial projects if requested. The extent ofour design depends on the information provided, CCL can give general guidanceto consultants at initial stages based on a small amount of data or be fullyinvolved in the process at structural design stage. CCL has worked on manycomplex projects offering early advice that has assisted in minimising costs and reducing the projects’ critical path.
The bearings listed in this publication are merely a guide. We have alwaysinsisted on optimising design for each project. Our extensive investments infinite element, 3D Modelling, CAD/CAM and parametrics mean CCL can create fullbearing drawings in a very short timescale.
The Manufacturing ProcessCCL is a fully approved ISO facility and we adhere to strict quality procedures.Once bearings are approved they are transferred to our business system and thedrawing issue hard coded to ensure bearings are produced to the client’sapproved specification.
All components are fully inspected on receipt at CCL and are fully traceable tosource, parts are then machined or assembled to a unique order number for thespecified project. On completion every bearing is fully inspected and taggedbefore release to our despatch area.
Testing and InstallationDepending on the client’s wishes and budgets, bearings can either be witnesstested at our test facilities or accredited laboratories. CCL staff will be availableto produce test reports and comment on the testing procedure. CCL through itsown site services company can install bearings or carry out certain remedialworks as requested. At CCL we understand site conditions and are available tosupervise installation by the client or review any remedial actions due toinstallation issues.

Fixed Pin bearings will not transfer any vertical load. The vertical load wouldgenerally be taken by Laminated Elastomeric bearings positioned each side ofthe Fixed Pin bearing.
In situations where space is restricted the bolting of the top plate can provedifficult. Uniguide and Fixed Pin bearings can be supplied with an optionaltang plate to overcome this problem. This provides a permanent anchor forthe bearing within the concrete.

LR elastrometric bearings:
CCL Elastometric Bearings are usually designed and manufacturedto British Standard BS 5400: Part 9 :1983 and if required, calculations can be prepared to take into account EN1337Specification and the Department of Transport requirements listedunder their Departmental Standard BD20/92.
CCL standard bearings have chloroprene or natural rubber laminatesin thicknesses of 5, 8 and 11 mm and steel plates in thicknesses of2, 3 and 4mm. Other thicknesses of rubber laminations and steelplates can be produced if requested.
In addition to this a Quick Production Test (QPT) is carried out onevery bearing to ensure that the bearings have been correctlyformed and will not delaminate.
PR/SR plain pad and strip bearing:
This bearing type is the cheapest and quickest to produce but allowssmall vertical, rotation and shear displacements by elastic deformation. They should not be used under heavy and constant shear forces toprolong the lifespan, as long as their maintenance is sustainedthroughout their service life.
