SWIX Operational Field Trials Monitoring of track substructure around S&Cs
The Challenge
Globally, £11B is spent per annum on railway Switch & Crossing (S&C)
maintenance and replacement. Route cause analysis of Network Rail fault
records from CP5 identified that poor substructure condition around the switch
toe and the crossing nose were major contributing factors in S&C failure.
Our Solution
SWIX is an end-to-end remote condition
monitoring solution for predicting and preventing
switch failure. The solution uses sensor nodes
placed at the switch toe and crossing nose to
dynamically characterise switch component
health and substructure condition each time
rolling stock passes the site. The data is sent to a
cloud service where it is analysed, stored and
remotely viewed by infrastructure managers.
The SWIX solutions was rolled out across 8 S&Cs
on the LNW route at Hanslope junction. Thanks
to SWIXs novel attachment mechanism, no
drilling of the concrete bearers was required and
the average install time was 7 minutes per unit.
The Outcome
The SWIX deployment is providing infrastructure managers with remote and
real-time asset monitoring data, enabling them to predict and prevent S&C
failures, ensuring a more cost efficient and reliable UK rail network.
A special thanks to the London North West route for supporting installations.
