Captivating Cultures Come Alive at Phoenix Art Museum

Over 50 years old, the now 285,000-square-foot

Phoenix Art Museum in the heart of Phoenix presents more than 18,000 objects of American, Native American, European, Asian, Latin American and Western American contemporary and modern art spanning centuries and up to the 21st century.

In the Western American Art collection, for example, there are nearly 900 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints of the American West. There are also many pieces by artists from the Southwest as well as by famous well-known artists.

The museum has become the southwestern United States' largest art museum and has been visited by millions, including more than one million school children.

This large museum has a tasteful modern design with large galleries, and it surrounds a spacious courtyard.

Since the collection is spread out through different rooms, it is a challenging layout for which you need to have a map or a helpful guide to find your way around.

The permanent collection galleries are well labeled regarding the art works and the artists.

There have been hundreds of exhibitions as well as visual arts and educational programs, live performances in a 300-seat public theater, festivals, independent art films, and traveling exhibits.

Also included have been photography exhibitions partnered with The University of Arizona's Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, studio classroom facilities, fashion design exhibits, and a research library.

Visitors also enjoy the children's interactive PhxArtKids where kids can do hands-on crafting, 20 Thorne Miniature Rooms that are replicas of houses in the United States and Europe -

and depict the detailed interior design and architecture, lectures, films, dining at the Museum's restaurant, shopping at The Museum Store, and strolling the beautifully landscaped Dorrance Sculpture Garden.

That unique setting is a popular choice to host holiday parties, business luncheons or a special ceremony.

Of special interest is the Native American pottery, jewelry and glass works; the Chinese art collection with painted scrolls, ceramics and jade carvings;

Japanese art with warrior's armor and lacquered items; medieval art including a great number of renaissance paintings; and more such delightful finds.

Another favorite is the "infinity room" by internationally renowned Yayoi Kusama, which is officially titled “You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies,” but has been shortened to “Fireflies” or the “Firefly Room.”

In a 25 square foot room, to provide maximum reflectivity, the walls are lined with mirrors, the floor is polished black granite, and the ceiling is black Plexiglas.

An ethereal and spiritual 2 1/2 minute repeated light show is created from 250 LED lights that hang from the ceiling.

The exhibits are ever changing throughout the year, so it is exciting to visit on a regular basis.

You may want to take advantage of the fact that on Wednesday afternoon of every week and late on the first Friday of each month, admission is free!
