It may be a little way off yet but I am already look-ing forward to writing in the spring of 2013 to those responsible for the best products of the year and tell-ing them: You are winner of the red dot design award! Because I have known for more than 20 years now just what our competition means to the designers and entrepreneurs and how enthusiastically they commu-nicate their success and will celebrate it at our awards ceremony. And with good reason. You and your winning products will be presented extensively – in our yearbooks, at our exhibitions and not least in the media. The main public and private television broadcasters and magazines in Germany as well as numerous international print and online media reported widely on the “red dot award: product design” winners and awards ceremony in 2012.
Welcome to the world of design
But the red dot label is not just a marketing tool. It de-fines, recognises and differentiates the best products of the year as evaluated by a jury with a reputation and a level of internationality that is second to none. If you want to prove the quality of your new products, then you need to convince our jury. Measure yourself in an international comparison and take part in the “red dot award: product design 2013”. I wish you the very best of luck!
Yours sincerely,
Prof. Dr. Peter ZecInitiator and CEO of the red dot design award

red dot: best of the bestThe “red dot: best of the best” is awarded for ground-breaking designs. Only the outstanding products of a category receive this highest distinction of the compe-tition. In 2012, 1.3% of all submissions to the “red dot award: product design” were honoured with the “red dot: best of the best”.
red dotThe red dot is the renowned distinction for high design quality. A jury of international experts awards the cov-eted quality seal only to products which set themselves apart significantly from comparable products thanks to their excellent design.
honourable mentionThe red dot jurors recognise particularly well-executed aspects of design works with the “honourable men-tion”. Products which convince them with thought-out detail solutions are honoured with this special award.
red dot: design team of the yearSince 1991, a very special appreciation has been award-ed: With the title of honour “red dot: design team of the year”, the achievements of one design team that shapes markets around the world through consistently innova-tive design performance has been rewarded annually. In recent years, such renowned companies as Apple, Nokia, Pininfarina, BMW, Bose, Tupperware, Grohe or – current-ly – Porsche have lined up in the hall of fame of design.

The jury of the “red dot award: product design” The jury is the heart of the “red dot award: product design”, because the renowned specialists from all over the world guarantee with their expertise the high quality level of the competiton as well as the expressiveness of the red dot seal. The composition changes from year to year, whereby the jury members always pledge to a “Code of Honour” and are excluded from taking part in the competition. In addition, to avoid conflicts of interest, the jurors may generally not be employees of the manufacturing industry.
In a several days lasting process, the international luminaries test, discuss and evaluate each single submis-sion of the many thousands live and on-site – a logistic feat, as there is no preselection. The procedure fol-lows a canon of adjudication criteria which is constantly adapted to the latest findings in formal, technical, manufacturing, societal, industrial and ecological requirements. These criteria provide a guiding framework, which is filled in individually by each juror: due to their different backgrounds, the jurors consciously also assess the special intercultural aspects of design.

Every year, about 180,000 guests visit the exhibition, which has its origins in the “Ständige Schau Industrieform” of 1955. The house, which is located in the former boiler house of UNESCO world cultural heritage Zeche Zollverein, was rebuilt by Brit-ish star architect Lord Norman Foster specifically for the purpose of a museum. Today, the red dot design museum presents latest product culture in the midst of old industrial culture on an area of approximately 4,000 square metres: an impressive setting in which all prize-winning products of the “red dot award: product design” are presented for at least one year.
