Conclusions …
Single-Cell PCR/RFLP analyses allow cheap and rapid processingof a high number of samples collected over large geographicand temporal scales in the pelagic realm. The molecular biogeographic patterns are relatively simpleand stable between basins.
Cosmopolitan, globally distributed species with extremelyhigh ecological/genetic plasticity do not seem to exist in the plankton.
They are in fact monophyletic groups of sister specieshaving specific, and often allopatric biogeographic ranges.
There is a significant decoupling between morphologic and geneticdifferentiations in both foraminifers and coccolithophores.
Simple spatio-temporal disconnection betweenThe morphological and genetic/ecologicdifferentiations
Actively ongoing process of creation/extinctionof biological species with different ecologicalranges.
