Introduction It was September 9th 1919 when the Boston Police went on strike.

I was sitting in my office when my assistant came in and told me the news. This is what he said…

The police have gone on strike. The city didn’t meet the officers demands

The city was left unattended

Criminals have taken over the city

I have decided what to do.

I have decided to call in the Militia to take back the town

The AFL began to make police unions to help the town.

After the strike the Boston Police department recruited new officers and had no officers from the strike.

Authors’ NoteThe Boston Police went on strike because the

city didn’t meet the officers demands. The criminals took this as an advantage and looted and took over the city. Governor Calvin Coolidge called in the militia to take back the city. The AFL then began to create Police Unions and the Police Department hired all new police officers and had no one from the strike work for them.

GlossaryMilitia-a body of citizens enrolled for military service,

Strike-a concerted stopping of work or withdrawal of workers' services, as to compel an employer to accede to workers' demands or in protest against terms or conditions imposed by an employer.
