Born-1774 in Lincolnshire, England Died-1814 Was one of the first people to discover

Tasmania with George Bass. 1st to sail around Australia and it took him

a year. He sailed to Tamara. Had a wife named Anne. He proved Australia was a whole land

mass. He is British.

Matthew was one of the most successful navigators of his age and his career lasted just over 20 years.

He first entered Phillip bay in on the 27th of April 1802, he charted the whole entire bay including the Geelong area, believing he was the first to sight the huge expanse of water, but in a rush to reach Sydney he left Port Phillip bay on the 3rd of May. Australian mainland and Tasmania became known as Bass Strait after the ship's doctor and close friend of his, George Bass, and a large island was named Flinders Island. He sailed to New South Wales in 1795 and explored an unknown strait now known as Bass Strait between Australia and Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania).

He studied at his local parish school and then at the Horbling Grammar School where he was particularly interested in mathematics and navigation.

A high school has been named Matthew Flinders after him.
