AftermorethanadecadeofvisitingtheBeeHutattheBarnstableCountyFair,myhusbandandIfinallydecidedtobecomebeekeepers.Wehadtalkedaboutitforyears,butneverseemedtotaketheplungeThen,insummer2014,whileonceagainvisitingtheBeeHut,thetimingjustseemedright.Twoyearsbefore,mymomhadmovedinwithusfollowingastrokeandToddandIbecamehercaretakers.Sheverymuchenjoyedthefair,andsharedourfondnessfortheBeeHut,havingvisiteditwithusseveraltimes.Wewereinsearchofwaystomakesureourworlddidn’tgettoosmall,andso,inwinter2014,Toddtookthebeekeepingclass,andIstudiedthematerialsathome.MomlovedhearingusexchangeinformationandonceBeeSchoolwasover,thethreeofusattendedseveralBCBAmeetingstogether.Shetookgreatprideinhelpingusasweassembledourfirsthiveandframes.Sheaskedquestions,anddespiteherincreasingdementia,nevertiredoflearningaboutournewhobby.Momhadalwaysbeenanaturelover,

andcouldoccupyherselfforhoursinourbackyard,watchingthebirdsandwildlife.Thebeeswerealogicalextensionofthispassion.InApril2015,momproudlyaccompaniedusaswepickedupourfirstpackageofbees.Shesatonthedeckwatchingintentlyasourmentorhelpedusinstallthem,andagainfloodeduswithquestionsandencouragement.Intheweeksthatfollowed,shereveledatourupdatesandcelebratedwithusastheyflourished.Shortlythereafter,mom’s

healthandmentalstatusbegantodeclinefurther,andwewerenolongerabletocareforhersafelyathome,aswefacedthedifficultdecisionoftransitioninghertoanursinghome.Wevisitedherfrequentlyandbroughthervideosofourinspections.Shecouldn’thavebeenmorefascinated.Asmom’slanguagedecreased,shecouldnolongerrecalltheword“bees,”butstillaskedaboutthem,referringtothemnowas“ourhoneys.”Welovedhersubstitutions,andthisbecameoneofourfavorites.Fortunately,theyearwasaverysuccessfulone,andshewasabletotastethefruitsofourlaboroflove,andabsolutelylovedtheflowerygoodnessoffreshhoney.Ourbeesmadeitthroughtheirfirstwinter,andinthespring,wefoundourselvesneeding

tosplitthehivewhenwediscoveredseveralswarmcells.Again,wevisitedmom,showingherphotosandexplainingtheprocesswehadtocompleteandthatwenowhadtwohives.Imagineoursurprisewhenshesaid,“Sothatmeansthatyouwillhavetwoqueens.”Thisobviouslywasnotalongtermmemory,assheknewlittleaboutbeespriortoourundertaking,andwewereparticularlypleasedasshedemonstratedtherecallofthisnewerknowledge.Momturned91inNovember.Ontheshelfinherroomsitsajarofourhoney.Nowandthen,sheenjoysitinacupoftea.Mostlythough,shejustlikestoknowit’sthere.Thoughhermemorycontinuestofadeandherlanguageisbecomingmoreandmoreimpaired,sheconsistentlyasksaboutourbees.TherearecountlessthingsthatIloveaboutbeekeeping,butthereistrulynothingthatIlovemorethanthatmomisapartofit.

DidyougototheBCBA'sannualholidayfestivalonDecember13?Ifnot,hereiswhatyoumissedbut,first,manythankstothenumerousvendorsandpatronswhomadeitafestiveandfunevent.Itisalwaysamazingtome(althoughIsupposeitshouldn'tbe)howcreativeandskillfulourmember/vendorsare.Fromknittingtobeeswaxcandlestolotionstolocalhoneytoclubcalendars,tshirtsandsuncatcherstoSlovenianbeehivestoimportedbasketsfromMadagascarandmuchmore,therewassomethingforeveryone.Notsurprising,thesolidpatronageofourmembersspoketothequalityoftheofferings.Andwhereelsecouldyoubetalkingaboutformicacidwhilesimultaneouslytestingasoothinghandcreamorappreciatingthecolorofalocalhoney?

Thereissomethingtobesaidfor"shoppinglocal."Ourholidayfestivalcertainlyshowcasedwhatisbestaboutthis.Whereelsearevendorsaffordedano-costtabletoshowcasetheirgoodsandwhereelsecanbuyerspurchasequality"stuff"fromourneighborsandfellowbeekeepers?Vendorsandpatrons,markyoucalendarfor12/12/17,whenwe'llbedoingitallagain!

Drivingthroughthebogstheotherday,Inoticeddebrisbehindthemouseguardonadeadouthive.Huh?Themouseguardwasteleftinforgoodventilationtopreventawaxmothinfestationandmoldlatefall.Well,uponinvestigationbypullingthetwodeepsapart,FIVE,thatis5micejumpedout?Yuck!AndEEK!Nodamagedoneyet,butquiteacollectionofdebrisfortheirnewnestwasremoved.Suchcreativelittlecrittersbutnotthistimeonmydime!Theywereabletosqueezeinoneendofthemouseguard(1/2”hardwarecloth)whichwasabout¾”tooshort.Ok,theseareniceframesforanewpackagetogetstartedwithsoanewapproachwasneeded.Gotit!Storingmyqueenexcludersinallhives,itwasmoveddownBELOWthebottomdeepboxrestingdirectlyonthebottomboard.Theinnercoverwasflippedtothesummerside(flatsidedown)andtheventilationstickwasplacedagainsttheopeningtoblock.Thechallengeison!Butwhydidittakemesolongtofigurethisout?

Bitofhistory–Itseemsfittingaswecloseoneyearandwelcomeanewonetolookbackatoursuccessesandfailures.

Backin2009therewasaninterestamongafewBCBAmemberstoconsideraqueen-rearingproject.PromptingtheinterestwastheavailabilityofaSpecialtyCropFundingthroughtheUSDAandadministeredbytheMassachusettsDepartmentofAgriculturalResources.ThethreeyeargrantwaswrittenandreceivedandthusbegunCapeBeein2010.

Overthenextfewyears,severaldirectionsweretakenlearningfromourfailures.Initially,theapproachwastofindasimplemethodtoteachmemberstoraisetheirownqueensthroughtheMillermethod,afunbutnotpracticalapproach.Thenextstepwasforafewmemberstograftlarva,developqueensthroughthematingprocessandsellthequeensasmated,layingqueens.Again,notapracticalapproachforBCBAmembers,astoomanybeesandbroodwereneededtorealizethefinalproduct.Itshouldbenotedeachseasonweeitherstartedwithpackages,nucleuscoloniesorpurchasedRussian,Carniolanorcostlybreederqueens.Noneprovedtobeexceptionalbutthoseofusacceptingthesevariousbeesintoourapiariesdidbenefitduethegeneticdiversity.

Fouryearsago,theclubwasinvitedtomovethevariousclubhivestothecountyproperty,siteoftheformercountyfarmandaportioncurrentlyfarmedbyTimFriaryoftheCapeCodOrganicFarminBarnstable.Thiswasaperfectmoveandfromhereourgoalschanged.Thereremainedinterestandaneedforlocallyraisedqueensbutmorehands-oneducationwasneededtoinstructmembersonhowtomakesplitsandcreatenucleuscolonies.Thefirstwinterwelostallthehivesbutwithincomeleftfromthegrant,wepurchased12nucleuscoloniesand12packages.Thiswasfoundtobeanoverwhelmingnumbertomanagebyafewvolunteers,butweforgedon.Queenrearingcontinuedwithafewmembersgraftingandthedecisionwasmadetosellqueencellsabouttoemergetomembers,re-queenhivesinourapiaryandaddafewcellsto5framesplitsforsaletomembers.Thedrawbackherewasthefactthatthecellswereveryfragileandtimewascriticalformakingnucleuscoloniesbeforethevirginqueensemerged.Transportingthecellsalsowasachallenge.

Thebasicgoalsoutlinedinthefallof2014wereto1)developamorelocallyadaptedhoneybeeforourrigorousCapeenvironment,2)promotebothbackyardqueenrearingandtheuseofnucleuscoloniesamongtheBCBAmembershipand3)reducethedamageofover-winteredcolonylossbybreedingbetterbeesandover-winteringstrongnucleuscolonies.Becauseofthespecializedequipmentneededforqueenrearingandnumberofhivesneeded,promotingqueenrearingamongmembersisnotfeasible.However,spreadingthelocalgeneticslivesonwithbutafewfolksqueenrearing.

From2014tothepresent,theclubmaintainstheapiaryinBarnstableappreciativeoftheuseoftheacreageandtheuseofthefarm’svacantbuilding.Maintainingtheproperty,thankstotwodedicatedmembers,keepsitasashowplaceandconvenientworkshoplocation.Overthe

lastfewyears,aswarmofmembershavemetonaweeklyscheduletomanagethehives.MonthlyhiveopeningshaveoccurredtohelpeducatenewandveteranbeekeepersonthevariousmanagementtechniquesandwillcontinueMaythroughNovember.Ourgoalistomaintainaminimumnumberofhivesinordertoproperlymanagebutasufficientnumbertomakesplits/nucssellingafewwhileworkingtofindagoodoverwinteringtechniquewiththesesmallclusters.Asofthiswriting,CapeBeehas16standardhivesandfour5framenucleuscoloniesgoingintowinterwithminimaltreatment.

QueenrearingwillcontinuebyfewusinglarvafromhealthyoverwinteredhivesaroundtheCape.Whatismostexcitingistobesellingnewlyhatchedvirginqueens.Itissuchathrilltofollowagraftedlarvatoaformedcappedqueencellandfinallyseeheremergefromthecellrightinthecage.Again,thesevirginsarefragileandprotocolmustbefollowedexactlyuponpurchase!NewequipmentwillbeusedcomeMayof2017inhopestoimproveourqueenrearingandoverwinteringofthenucleuscolonies.Goodreportshavebeenreceivedfromthosememberspurchasingournucleuscoloniesandqueenssostaytunedasweeducateandslowlyspreadsomehealthy,locallyadaptedqueensaroundtheCape.

Asbeekeepers,wedoourbesttoensurethatourbeessurvivethewinterandmakeittospring.Asthesnowflakesdrifttotheground,wedream(oratleastIdo),ofsplittingtheoverwinteredhives.Butdidyouknowthatdespiteyourbesteffortssometimesthebeesperishnomatterwhat?Sadlyit'strue.Asbeekeeperswedoourbesttopreventwinterdemisebyfollowinghelpfulchecklistscreatedovertheyearsbyourmembers-WinterChecklist:

• Varroatreatmentpriortowinter?• Winterfeedingofbeesandcheckingonstoresmonthly?Replenishasneeded.• Protectthehivesfromdraftsandstrongwinds?• Clearthesnowfromtheentranceswhencovered?• Wrapthehivesinblackroofingpapertohelpstabilizetemperatureswithinthem?• Makeaquiltingboxorventilatethehivetohelpwithmoisture?

Despitethesemeasures,someofyouwillhavehivesthatdie.Whyyouask?Thisisbecauseoftworeasonsthatyouhaverelativelynocontroloverasbeekeepers.TheyarebothcausesbyMotherNature.Sometimes,whenwehavehugetemperaturesswingsinamatterofhoursonthesameday,thebeesarecaughtoffguard.Whenthetemperaturesfluctuateanddiprapidly,thebeesareunabletore-clusterquicklyenough.Thishappenedlastyear.Wehadoneday,whenweexperiencedtemperaturesabovesixty,thenlaterthateveningdroppedintothelowteensforthenextfewdays.TherewasnothingthatIcoulddo.Idiscoveredtheydiedafewdayslater.Theywerenotoutoncleansingflightsasexpected.Whenthishappens,youmayseeevidence.Beesarescatteredthroughoutthehive,withplentyoffoodstoresandnoothersignsofissues.

Beescanalsoperishiftheyareunabletobreaktheclusterthattheykeepforwarmth.Beesneedwarmerdaysintheupper30stobeabletomoveclosertostoredfoodsourceswithinthehive.Beeswillnotbreaktheclustersonstringsofcolddayseveniftheyarestarvingandfoodiswithinmereinchesoftheirwings.Whenyoudoapost-mortemcheck,youwilldiscoverthebeesstillintheir"ball"compact.Somebeeswillevenbefoundinsidethecells,inanefforttokeepwarm.Foodsuppliesarenotanissue.Sadly,beescanfreezetodeath.Beekeepingisanart.Itisnotaperfectscience.Wecontinuallylearn.Sometimesthingsareourownfaultsandothertimes,wehavenocontrol.AfteryearsofbeekeepingonCapeCod,Ihavelearnedthatthewinterweatherisunpredictable.Ialwaystaketimetoreserveanewbeehiveortwonowfromalocalapiary.It'snotabadidea,andIthinkyouwillfindthatmostclubmemberswillhappilypayyoubackforthebeesyouboughtifyoudon'tneedthem.Iliketothinkofitasabitofinsurance.Ifthereevenissuchathinkinbeekeeping.

PattysquintedhereyesatPaul.“Don’tyourememberfrombeeschool?Itwassuggestedseveraltimes,anditwasevenmentionedatthesessionwhenwelearnedhowtointroducethepackageofbeesintothenewhive.Weshouldkeepdetailedrecordsofourhives.”

PaulputtheirfirstcopyofBeeCulturedownonthemahoganylamptablenexttotheantiquewingbackchair.Hehadbeenreadinganarticleaboutqueenbeerearinginwhichtheyhadstronglystressedtheneedforkeepingrecordsoftheprocess.Itseemedthattimingwasoftheutmostimportancewhenrearingqueens.Waittoolongatanystepandthingscouldgetmessy.

Althoughherememberedthetimestheinstructorsatbeeschoolmentionedtheneedforkeepingajournalaboutone’shive,hedecidedtoteasePattyandpretendtonotunderstand.

Pattyjustshookherheadinmilddisappointmentandsaid,“Here’syournotebook.Thefirstpageisacalendar,soataglanceyoucanseethelasttimeyouvisitedyourhive.Ifyouusedifferentcoloredmarkers,youcanscheduledifferentreasonsforgoingtoyourhive.

“I’velaidtherestofthejournaloutsoitisachecklist.ItriedtothinkofasmanythingsasIcould,rememberingtheinformationwegotfrombeeschool,butI’msurewe’llhavetorevisetheformataswematureasbeekeepers.”

Substituteapplejuiceforbourbon,ifyouprefer.Lookforbunchesofcarrotsthatareallaboutthesamesizesothey'llcookevenly.Ifsomearetoobig--orifyoucan'tfindreal(sometimeslabeledFrench)babycarrots--justpeelthebiggeronesandhalvethemlengthwisebeforeroasting.

Yield: Makes4to6servings

Ingredients

• 2poundsbabycarrotswithtops• 2teaspoonsoliveoil• 3tablespoonsbutter,divided• 1/2teaspoonkoshersalt• 1/4teaspoonfreshlygroundblackpepper• 1shallot,finelychopped• 2tablespoonsbourbon• 2tablespoonshoney• 1tablespoonchickenbrothorwater• 1/2teaspoonchoppedfreshthyme

Preparation

1.Placeasmallroastingpaninoven.Preheatovenandpanto500°.

2.Cuttopsfromcarrots,leaving1inchofgreeneryoneachcarrot.

3.Stirtogetheroliveoiland1Tbsp.butterinpreheatedpan.Addcarrots,salt,andpepper;tosstocoat.Bake10minutes.

4.Meanwhile,meltremaining2Tbsp.butterinasmallsaucepanovermedium-highheat.Addshallot;sauté1minute.Removefromheat,andstirinbourbonandnext2ingredients.Returntoheat,andbringtoaboil,stirringoccasionally.Reduceheattomedium,andcook5minutesoruntilmixtureissyrupy.

5.Drizzlesyrupovercarrots;tosstocoat.Bake5to7moreminutesoruntilcarrotsarecrisp-tender.Transfertoaservingdish,andsprinklewiththyme.
