Lumberjack Shack offers program to provide saws for fire departmentsBY PHIL FOLEY810-452-2616 • pfo-ley@mihomepaper.com

ALMONT TWP. — Alocal outdoor equip-ment company thatrecently held a fundraiser for the AlmontTownship Fire Dept.now wants to offer theprogram to LapeerCounty’s 14 other firedepartments.

David Zgnilec, theowner of LumberjackShack, held a drawingearlier this month thatwon a Romeo man a$930 Stihl chainsaw andput a new Stihl rescuesaw in the hands of theAlmont Township FireDept.

A rescue saw is simi-lar to a standard chain-saw, expect it has aguard that allows fire-fighters to set a cuttingdepth that makes itpossible to cut throughroofing materials with-out cutting throughroof trusses while fight-ing a fire.

“It’s a needed tool, that’s for sure,” saidAlmont Township FireDept. Lt. Brent Smith.“Having one this newand advanced is reallynice. It makes the jobeasier and safer.”

Smith added thesaw’s special depthgauge can be removedfor those times whenfirefighters need a regu-lar chainsaw.

Zgnilec said a con-versation at his shop inDecember led to the idea of selling tickets

for a drawing for achainsaw to raiseenough money to get afire department a res-cue saw. “We decidedto test the waters withAlmont,” he said, andthey sold 200 $10 tick-ets.

He said they sold thetickets the last threeweeks of December andpresented the saws Jan.1. “It was completelynon-profit,” he said, and now he wants to dothe same for the coun-ty’s other fire depart-ments.

“Everything cametogether real nice,” saidZgnilec.

Zgnilec’s father, Bob,opened the business 35years ago selling chain-saws, log splitters, wood cutting acces-sories and wood stovesat 7230 Webster Rd., offVan Dyke about twomiles south of I-69. In1989 when the youngerZgnilec took over thebusiness he added lawnand recreational equip-ment to the productsavailable.

He said any firedepartment in thecounty interested inholding a drawing toraise money for a res-cue saw should call himat 810-724-7230.

Almont Township Fire Dept. firefighters Chad Kury, Scott Garner, Jeff Ludwig,Brent Smith and Bret Schapman accept a rescue saw from Lumberjack Shackowner Dave Zgnilec as the winner of the chainsaw drawing. Dennis Davis, andAlmont firefighters Derik Stine, Mike Alfonsi and David Gaj look on.

“It’s a needed tool, that’s for sure.Having one thisnew andadvanced isreally nice. Itmakes the jobeasier andsafer.”

He called the accom-plishment “a team effort.”

“Not bad for littleLapeer,” said Jeff, notingthere are about 20 otherSpyder dealers just inMichigan.

The Spyder, said Jeff, isa “much more stable userfriendly” platform than thetraditional motorcycle. Headded, “We had a 67-year-old woman who was look-ing at a sports car whotook one of these instead. It took up less space in hergarage.”

Jeff added the dealer-ship also recently receivedPlatinum Certificationfrom BRP. He said that is acombination of retail unitsales for last year and thestore’s customer serviceindex (CSI). “All of ourCSIs scored 95 percent orabove,” he said.
