K. Marshall Williams, Sr.
K. Marshall Williams, Sr. wrote the Thanksgiving study, Thank You, Lord. For
the past 28 years he has served as pastor of the historic Nazarene Baptist
Church Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Augsburg College and
the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary of Philadelphia. He has served as the
chairman of the African American Advisory Council to The Southern Baptist
Convention and vice president of The National African American Fellowship,
Southern Baptist Convention.
We love it when people tell us Thank you.
Its great to be appreciated and valued. Gratitude is essential to healthyhuman interactions of all kinds. At some point in our pilgrimage, our
parents, spouses, children, neighbors, and colleagues expect us to
express appreciation in some way for their contributions to our lives.
Were indebted to many people for who we are and where we are
in life.
Even more so, we are indebted to God. That should come out in our
thanks and gratitude to Him. No one in our lives is more deserving of
gratitude than the Lord, and we can be assured that He will receive our
gratitude as a sweet smelling sacrifice of praise. And when we have
persistently practiced gratitude toward God, it will be manifested in
our gratitude and attitude toward others.
How do we express our thanks to the One who has done so much
for us? In His love for us, God has given us Psalm 100, a short but
expressive psalm that gives us a wonderful formula for the expression
of thanksgiving. Psalm 100 addresses the who, what, where, when,
why, and how of giving thanks.

THE POINT Thanks should come naturally when I think about God.
Psalm 100:1-2
Psalm 100 gives us seven imperatives or commands of thanksgiving.
1. Give a triumphal shout to the Lord. The text, originally
written in the Hebrew language, is very explicit as it calls us
to raise a shout or give a blast as on a trumpet. Worship is
not a spectator sport; its a participatory event. The psalmist
says we need to give shoutsverbal expressionsof
thanksgiving. God commands us to shout words of joyful
approval to Him.
2. Serve Him with gladness. We are saved to serve God;not saved to just enjoy Gods Word and keep it to ourself
(Ephesians 2:10; James 2:14-15). A sign of a grateful heart
is joyful service. Colossians 3:23 tells us that, whatever we
do, we dont do it to please people but to glorify the Lord.
We are to serve Him with joy, gladness, and pleasantness
(2 Corinthians 9:7).
3. Come into the presence of God with the singing of
joyful songs. Ephesians 5:19 calls us to use psalms, hymnsand spiritual songs to sing and make music to the Lord in our
heart. When we come into His presence, we are to give Him
joyful, heartfelt praise, not routine, empty singing.
What is the relationshipbetween praising God and
serving Him?

How do we offer heartfelt worship to God on a continual basis?
] AcknowledgeGods roles in your life and thank Him for
those today.
] Developa personal plan to prepare for worship so that your
minds attention and hearts affection can center on Him. Feel
free to use the ideas your group developed for the Getting
Ready for Worship section, or come up with your own.
] WorshipGod privately this week. Find time to get alone with
Goddriving to class or work can be a time of worship when
we pause before a busy day to thank God for who He is.
As you enjoy Thanksgiving this week, dont miss the chance to also
draw near to God with a thankful heart. Consider how your life
your activities, your speech, your involvement at church, how you
prioritize your timespeaks of Gods goodness. Let thankfulness
be a habit so that your thoughts convey humility before
God and your attitude is one of constant gratitude.
