Cells → Tissues → Organ → Organ systems → Individual

Preparation of tissues for study Fixation – tissue is immersed in

preservative Embedding – water is removed with

alcohol, tissue is put in paraffin wax Sectioning – tissue is cut extremely thin

and is laid out on slide Staining – tissue is stained with dyes

that stain different structures

Epithelial tissueMuscular tissueNervous tissueConnective tissue

Can be simple or stratifiedCan be squamous, cuboidal, or

columnar

Simple Squamous Lining of lungs, blood

vessels, urinary

Stratified Squamous Protection – lining of

esophagus, vagina, mouth, skin

Simple Cuboidal – kidney tubules, glands

Simple Columnar – lines digestive tract

Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar - trachea

Loose fibrous connective tissue – supports epithelium, organs, muscles, blood cells

Dense Fibrous Connective Tissue – tendons, ligaments

Adipose Tissue – “fat”, insulation

Compact Bone
