Altar with multiple JinasIndia, 15th century CE

BronzeHeight 42 cm

The most interesting aspect of this bronze is its frame with 55 symmetrically arranged jinas surrounding the central figure (Parshvanatha) which illustrateJain belief in the existence of an infinity of jinas:

According to the eminent Jain scholar, Paul Dundas, this multiplicity is related to the jain concept of eras

of time, conventionally represented as a continual series of upward and downward turns of the wheel(1), twenty-four lords appear, one after the other.

There are elephants, lions and goddesses on the base. An inscription in Devanagari script appears

on the back of this altar.

(1)Based on a quotation in: Pratapadityia Pal, “Peaceful liberators”.Jain Art from India. Los Angeles, Thames & Hudson,

Los Angeles County Museum, 1994.

An imposing statue of Buddha Sakyamuni seated in meditation on a double lotus base, his right hand

in the earth-witnessing gesture. The Buddha and the base are made separately.

The Buddha is cast in four separate sections and is sealed underneath with a copper plate

engraved with a Mandala. There are some stylistic similarities with

a late 11th century wall painting of a seatedBuddha from Grathang Monastery in Central Tibet.1

The style of the double lotus, the lightweight castingof the image and the type of gilding are all

indicative of an early date.Height 62 cm

Silver-inlaid stem bowl and coverEastern Iranian world

Late 12th to early 13th century CEHeight: 17.5 cm

Diameter: 19.3 cm

This cast and engraved copper alloy stem bowl and cover are decorated withinlaid silver. The footed hemispherical bowl has a swelling body that curves very

slightly inward towards the mouth and rests on a splayed stemmed foot. The covergently curves and is surmounted by a large jewel-shaped knob finial.

On the cover are four radiating silver-inlaid ogival medallions fashioned ofinterlacing split stalks springing from a central heart-shaped knot. These alternate

with four large silver-inlaid knots of Solomon from which spring mirror-imagedinterlacing split stalks that gracefully curve outward on either side and terminate in bifurcating tendrils. Small silver-inlaid discs are featured in the interstitial areas.

Surmounting this decoration is a silver-inlaid continuous epigraphic band set againsta ground of spiralling foliage issuing palmettes and framed by silver-inlaid fillets.

The tall thulth script of Khorasani derivation wishes:

‘Glory, and Prosperity, and Wealth, and Happiness, and Well-being, and perpetual Long-life’.

A similar epigraphic frieze runs along the rim of the bowl: ‘Glory, and Prosperity, and Wealth, and Happiness, and Sympathy, and Health,

and Endurance, and the Intercession [of the Prophet], and Mercy, and Ease, and perpetual Long-life ...’

The base of the bowl features six evenly-spaced roundels finely inlaid with silver, enclosing a complex interlaced geometric pattern based on the knot of Solomon

which is set against a hachured ground. The foot is accentuated by a narrow band of undulating foliage bearing trefoils in the interstices.

The copper alloy is shiny where there is no patina; in other areas there are patchesof reddish-brown and green corrosion products.
