BRIEF INDUSTRIAL PROFILE OF CUDDALORE DISTRICT 1.General Characteristics of the District
For the Administrative convenience South Arcot District was bifurcated in to 2 districts namely, Cuddalore District, Viluppuram District. The District with Head quarter at Cuddalore has been named as Cuddalore District. The District is predominantly Agriculture with Coastal line stretching from Marakkanam which is now in Villupuram District in the North to the Mouth of River Coleroon in the South. 1.1.Location & Geographical Area

coastal line of 68 kilometer. The boundaries of the district are East : Bay of Bengal West: Viluppuram District North: Union Territory of Pondicherry South: Nagapattinam District

Handicraft Industries:
Cuddalore district has got strong base on handicrafts industries. Traditional handicrafts units are spreadover across the district. It is interesting to note that handicraft items such as jewellery, ceramics and pasimani malai have got more attraction even outisde the district in the State. Ceramics units are concentrated in Vridhachalam area. A total number of 2782 handicrafts units are functioning in the district providing employment to about 5000 persons. Neyveli Lignite Corporation:
Neyveli Lignite Corporation, a Public Sector enterprises incepted in the year 1956 has a chequered history. A pioneer among the public sector undertakings with complex industries under its fold. The main constituents units of the company are Lignite mines, Thermal Power Stations, Fertiliser plant and Briquetting and Carbonization plant. NLC is the only company in the public sector with such diverse production process under one aegis. Both first and second thermal power station consists of 260 Mw. Fertilizer plant with a capacity of urea per annum was commissioned in 1966. This plant is the first of its kind in India to adopt solid fuel gasification for synthesis gas production. Briquetting and Carbonization plant at NLC produced coke from lignite, which is sold under the popular trade name ‘LECO’. The coke produced in the plant is extensively used in the industrial sector by virtue of its special properties.
