Introduction

Canyoufoldatraditionalorigamicrane?Don’tworryiftheanswerisno.Neithercouldwewhenwefirststarted.WewereinspiredtostartpaperfoldingwhenNellianna’sfatherpresentedusbothwithasmallorigamimodel,whichhehadmadeaftertakinganorigamitutorialthatwehadgivenhimasabirthdaypresent.Weweresoblownawaybyitsstrengthandshadowplaythatwedecidedtoexploretheskilloforigamifoldingforourselvestodesignlampshades.

Initially,thiswasatimeoftrialand–mostly–error.Foldingsheetsofbakingpapertosaveoncosts,weeventuallycameupwithwhatarenowourbest-knownpendantlampdesigns–theChestnutandtheMoth,whichwerethefirstorigami-stylelampshadesonthemarketwhenwelaunchedourcompany,StudioSnowpuppe,backin2010.

Sincewefirststartedourdesignstudio,wehaveoftenaskedourselvesthequestion:areweapaperstudiomakinglamps,oralampstudiomakingpaperlampshades?Whilewritingthisbook,wehavefoundouranswer.Havingbeengiventheopportunitytoworkwithpapertocreateprojectsotherthanlampsforthefirsttime,wehavediscoveredthatwehaveapassiontocreateallsortsofbeautifulorigamiproductsforthe

passiontocreateallsortsofbeautifulorigamiproductsforthehome.

Manyoftheprojectsincludedhavebeenspeciallydesignedandcannotbefoundinthemarketplace,althoughwehavealsodecidedtoincludeourpopularMothlampshadeandafloorlampeditionoftheThistle,whichisourmostcurrentdesign.

Whetheryouareanexperiencedorigamistorjustabeginner,eachprojectisdescribedinawaythatiseasytounderstandandwehopetoencourageyoutodevelopyourorigamiskills.Whoknows,afteryouhavefinishedalltheprojectsinthisbook,youmayevenbeabletofoldanorigamicrane!

Beforeyougetstartedwerecommendthatyoureadthefollowingsectiontoensurethatyouunderstandthebasics.Hereweexplainhowtofollowtheinstructionsanddiagramsfortheprojectsinthebook.Wealsolistthetoolsandequipmentyou’llneedtocreatetheprojects,withsomeadviceonchoosingthecorrectpaperandassemblingthedesigns.

Ourmethod

Welearnedtodesignandmakeourfoldedinteriorproductsbytryingdifferenttechniquesandmakingalotofmodels–thisisoneofthemostenjoyableaspectsofworkingwithpaper!

Itisimportanttonotethatthetechniqueswehaveusedtocreatetheprojectsfeaturedinthisbookdonotfollowthestrictrulesoftraditionalorigami.Theserulesstatethattheprojectmustbefoldedfromasinglesquareofpaperwithoutanygluingorcutting.

Forourprojectsweusedifferentshapesandsizesofpaper,cutandattachpiecesofpapertogether,andweevenaddothermaterialslikewoodandcord.However,mostoftherequiredfoldsareusedintraditionalorigami.

Thetermsanddescriptionsusedinthisbookrelatetoourpersonalpreferences,sothesemaybedifferentfromwhatyouwillfindinother

preferences,sothesemaybedifferentfromwhatyouwillfindinotherbooksthataresolelyrelatingtoorigamitechniques.

Difficultyratings

Iconsareshownatthebeginningofeachprojecttoindicatethedifficultyofthefoldsandtechniquesinvolved.Ifyou’renewtofolding,werecommendstartingwithoneofthebeginnerlevelprojects(1star).Onceyou’vesuccessfullycompletedthesimplerdesigns,youcanprogresstotheintermediate(2star),advanced(3star)andveryadvanced(4star)levelprojects.

Choosingpaper

Whenchoosingpaperfortheprojectstherearethreethingstobearinmind–paperweight,colourandsize.Foreachprojectweadviseonthebestpapertouse,withspecificdetailsforpaperweightandsizegivenintherequirementslist,andadviceoncolourofferedintheintroduction.

Paperweight

Paperweightrelatestothethicknessofthepaper,whichismeasuredingramspersquaremetre(gsmorg/m2).Inthisbook,weworkwiththreedifferentpaperweights:

Between210gsmand270gsm(mediumweightcardstock):Thisisusedformostofourprojects,asitofferstheperfectbalanceofstrongbutfoldablepaper.Between290gsmand340gsm(heavycardstock):Thisisusedforprojectsthatdonothaveasmanyfolds,asitismoreimportantto

usestrongpaper.Between150gsmand190gsm(lightweight,flexiblecardstock):Thislighterweightpaperisusefulforprojectswheretransparencyisimportant,forexamplewherelightneedstoshinethroughthepaper.

Papercolour

Alloftheprojectsinthisbooklookgoodinwhite,butyoumayprefertousecolouredpapertocoordinatewithyourexistinghomedécor.Adviceonchoosingthemostappropriatecolourisprovidedintheintroductionfortherelevantproject.

Ifyouchooseacolouredpaper,makesurethatitisfullycoloured(i.e.,thepaperiscolouredonbothsidesandalsohasacolouredcore)assomecolouredpaperscanbelayeredwithwhite.Youwillgetthebestresultsusingapaperthatismadefromcolouredpaperpulp.

Papersize

Youwillneedtocutpapertospecificsizesforeachprojectbasedonthemeasurementsgivenintherequirementslist.Itisimportantthatthisisdoneaccuratelytoensurethebestresults.Werecommendusingasharpcraftbladewithametalruler.

Fortheprojectsfeaturedinthisbookthemaximumsizeofpaperweuseis1000x700mm.ThisisveryclosetotheInternationalOrganizationforStandardization(ISO)B1size,whichiswidelyavailablefromstationers.Ofcourseyoucanalwaysuseasmallersize,butinsomecasesthismaymeanthatyouwillneedtoattachmorepiecesofpapertogether.

Makingtheprojects

Eachoftheprojectsfeaturesitsownrequirementslistwithspecificdetailsofthepaper,materialsandadditionaltoolsyouwillneed.Theinstructionsforeveryprojectaredividedintothreemainsections–scoring,foldingandassembly.

Scoring

Thefirststageofcreatingyourchosendesignistoscorethepattern.Foreachprojecttherewilleitherbeatemplatetotraceand/orinstructionsforvariouslinestoscoreontoyourpre-cutpiecesofpaper.Takeyourtimewhenscoringthelinestoensurethatyoudonottearordamagethepaper.

Markandscoretheverticalandhorizontallinesfirst(seetip),andthenmarkandscorethediagonallinesbetweentheintersections,scoringeachpieceofpaperononeside.

▶Insteadofdrawingthelineswithapencilfirst,weprefertodirectlydrawontothepaperwithascoringtoolorthebackofaknife,makingadentinthepaperatthelocationofthepointstobemarked.Ifyoudouseapencil,drawsoftlysothelineiseasytoerase.

Onceallofthelinesshownonthediagramhavebeenscored,prepareanyedgesthatneedtobetapedorgluedandpunchholesifnecessary.Makesurethatyouhaveextendedthescoredlinesontotheassemblytab.Thisisimportantbecausetheassemblytabwillalsoneedtobefoldedinordertobeabletoattachtheendsofthepapertogethernicely.

Folding

Beforeyoustarttofoldyourchosenpaper,makeamodelofonesegment(seeSegmentDiagram)withapieceofscrappapertopractisethefolds.Thebestwaytolearnisthroughpractice,asyouwillbegintounderstandthediagramsbetterandthetextwillhelptoguideyou.

Therearethreestagesinvolvedinfoldingtheprojects:

TheseareexplainedfurtherintheTechniquessection(seeTechniques),alongwithanexplanationofthebasicfolds:mountainandvalley.

Assembly

Onceallofthelineshavebeenfolded,thereisoftenassemblyinvolvedtoattachthefoldedpiecesofpapertogether.Thisstageneedsalotofcareandattentiontoensurethatyourfinishedprojectlooksprofessional.

Weusedouble-sidedtape,glueandcordtoattachthepiecesofpapertogether.Themostappropriatemethodisindicatedintheinstructionsforeachproject,buthereissomegeneraladvicetobearinmind:

Double-sidedtape:Qualityisfarmoreimportantthanquantity,soitisworthspendingtimesearchingforthestrongestdouble-sidedtapeyoucanfind.Fortheprojectsfeaturedinthisbookwemostlyuse10mm-widedouble-sidedtape.Glue:Theonlygluethatweuseisbasicwoodglue.Woodgluedoesn’tdryparticularlyquickly,butitcreatesapermanentsealanddriescompletelyclear.Thismakesitextremelyreliableandensuresaneatfinish,eveniftherearespillages.Cord:Usingcordallowsflexibility,asyoucanpullthefoldedpapermodeltogetherandthenopenitagain.Thisenablesyoutochangethelightbulbinalampshadeandtoputnewbatteriesinthestandingclock.Weusebraidedflyingline,asyouareabletomelttheendsofthecordinordertopreventitfromfraying.Alengthof1metreshouldbesufficientfortheknots(seeTechniques:SlidingKnot).

Understandingthediagrams

Dependingontheproject,weuseacombinationofdiagramstoexplainthepatterns.Foreverystepwenotetherelevantdiagramtoofferavisualreferenceforeachinstruction.

Differentcoloursareusedonthediagramstoidentifythetechniquesrequired.Thekeyseenhere(seeKey)explainswhatthedifferentcoloursstandfor.

OverviewDiagram

Thisdiagramshowsanoverviewofthefullpapersizethatisneeded.Itfeaturesallofthefoldinglines,intersections,tabsthatneedtobetapedorgluedandanyholesthatneedtobepunched.Italsoshowswhichfoldinglinesmakeuponesegmentandhowmanysegmentseachsheetofpaperwillhave.

Thisdiagramshowshowtheverticalscoredlinesofeachsegmentneedtobefoldedwhenpleatingthepaper.Thiscanbeavalleyfold(blue)oramountainfold(orange).Thepleatedpaperisthestartpointforchangingthedirectionofthefoldsinthefoldingstepsforeachproject(seeChangingDirection).Itshouldbenoted,however,thatasyouwillstartpleatingatoneedgeofthepaper,thisedgeofthepleatedpaperisn’tfoldedandonlybecomesavalleyormountainfoldwhenthepleatedpaperisjoinedwiththeassemblytab(s).Effectivelyyoucannotfoldthefirstedgeofthepaper.

Threada1metrelengthofcordthroughthepunchedholes,thengentlypullthecordtopartiallyclose,andsecurethecordendsbytyingaslidingknot(seeTechniques:SlidingKnot).

Beforeinstallingthelampshade,itisimportanttoreadthesafetyinstructions(seeTechniques:LampSafety).Makesurethatthepowerisswitchedoff.

Placethecordsetwithalightbulbthroughtheopeninginthetopofthelampshade,thengentlypullthecordtotighten.WhenviewedfrombelowasinDiagram4,thecord/lightbulbshouldbecentredintheholeinthemiddleofthestarshapetoensurethatthelampshadehangsstraight.Makesuretoclosethecordatthetopcompletely.

TECHNIQUES

LampSafety

Wheninstallingorcleaningfinishedlampshades,itisimportanttoturnoffthepowerfirst.Forthethistlelamp,removetheplugfromthewallsocket;foranyoftheceilinglights,turnoffthepoweratthefusebox.

Whenfittingalampshadetoaceilingcordset,makesureyouworkfromasecuresetofladders(oradecorator’splatform)andgetafriendorfamilymembertoholdtheladdersothatitstaysfirmlygroundedforextrasafety.

ThelampshadesandlightfittingsinthisbookshouldonlybeusedwithLEDlightbulbswithamaximumwattageof6watts.AnLEDlightbulbisenergyefficientandheatsuplessthanahalogenoratraditionalincandescentlightbulb,makingitasafeoptiontousewithpapershades.

SomeLEDlightscanproduceacold,bluishlightsoapaperlampshadecanbetheperfectchoicefortheseenergy-efficientbulbs,aspapermakesthelightappearmorenatural,creatingawarm,cosyeffect,andcolouredpapercanhaveaparticularlystunningeffectonthelight.

AlthoughLEDlightbulbsdonotgethot,thelightbulbsocketcansometimesstillgethotdependingonthelightbulbsocketthatisused.YoushouldNEVERallowyourpapermodeltocomeintodirectcontactwithahotbulborlightbulbsocketasthiscanpresentafirerisk.

Wealwaysrecommendthatyoutestyourlightbulbandlightbulbsocketfirstbeforeinstallingapapershade.Switchonthelightforatleastone

hour.Ifafterithasbeenrunningforonehouryoucantouchthelightbulbandlightbulbsocketwithyourhandwithoutburningyourself(becareful!),thenitissafetousewithapaperlampshade.

Safetyfirst

Alwaysusealightbulbandlightbulbsocketthathavebeentestedandapprovedtomeettheelectricalstandardsofyourgeographicallocation.Ifyoucannotbesureofthis,buyandreplacetheseproductssothattheymeettheserequirementsfirstbeforeinstallingyourpaperlampshade.Althoughitissafetoinstallthepaperlampshadeyourself,youshouldALWAYShavetheelectricceilingcordinstalledbyaprofessionalelectrician.Wegetthepapersthatweuseforallourproductstestedforflammabilitybyanofficialtestinglab,andwehavefoundthatnotallpapersarethesame.Sometypesofpapermightnotmeetthesafetyrequirements:whenusedforlighting,treatthepaperyouintendtousebysoakingorsprayingitwithafireretardanttreatment.Neveruseapaperlampshadeinornearanopenfire.

Folding

Therearevariousmethodsinvolvedinthefoldingprocess,andthissectioncoversthemainstagesthatarecoveredinthefoldinginstructionsforeachproject.

Basicfolds

Beforestartingtofold,itisimportanttounderstandthebasics.Allofthefoldedpatternsshowninthisbookarecreatedusingjusttwodifferenttypesoffold:themountainfoldandthevalleyfold.Thesearebothsimplefolds,buttheycreateoppositeresults.

Forthevalleyfold,youfoldthepaperinsothatthefrontsidesaretogether,andforthemountainfold,youfoldthepaperoutsothatthereversesidesaretogether.

Pre-folding

Beforepre-folding,allthelinesfromtheOverviewDiagrammustfirstbescored(seeHowtoUseThisBook).

Pre-foldinginvolvesfoldingallofthescoredlinesasbothmountainandvalleyfolds.Whenapieceofpaperispre-foldeditbecomesmuchmoreflexibleandbeginstobehavemorelikefabric.

1.Startbypre-foldingtheverticallines,andhorizontallinestooifmarked.Usetheedgeofatabletofoldthelines.

2.Thenpre-foldallthediagonals.Thesearehardertopre-foldastheydonotnecessarilyextendacrossthewholeheightorwidthofthepaper.Topre-foldthediagonallinesoneithersideofaverticalline,valleyfoldtheverticallinesothatthediagonallinesoverlap.

3.Mountainfoldalongthetwooverlappingscoreddiagonallines.

4.Thenvalleyfoldthesamelines.

▶Youcanuseabonefoldertocreasethelines,butweprefertodothisbyhand.

Pleating

Pleatinginvolvesalternatingbetweenmountainfoldsandvalleyfoldstocreateaconcertinashape.Thisisabasictechniquethatisusedinalmosteveryprojectinthisbook.ItisimportanttorefertothePleatingDiagramintheprojectinstructionstoidentifywhetheryoushouldstartpleatingasegmentwithavalleyormountainfoldasthiswillaffectthedesign.Itshouldbenotedthat,asyouwillstartpleatingatoneedgeofthepaper,thisedgeofthepleatedpaperisn'tfoldedandonlybecomesavalleyormountainfoldwhenthepleatedpaperisjoinedwiththeassemblytab(s).Effectivelyyoucannotfoldthefirstedgeofthepaper.

ThePleatingDiagramitself(seeHowtoUseThisBook)identifiestheorientationofthescoredverticallinesinasegmentoncethepaperhasbeenpleatedandbeforethefoldingstepsbegin.

Tobeabletocreateapleat,scored,pre-foldedverticallinesonthepaperareneededasindicatedonDiagrams1and2.

Whiledoingthepleating,youwillcompressthepapertomakeiteasierandquickertomakealltherequiredmountainfoldsandvalleyfolds.Compressingthepaperisjustgatheringthefoldedpartofthepaperinonehand.whilepressingthefoldedpartwiththeotherhand(seePhoto1).

Afterthepleatingiscompletelycompressed(Photo2),youwillneedtoreleasethepaperagaintogiveyoutherequiredfreedomofmovementtobeabletochangethedirectionofthefolds.InmostcasesitisenoughtojustreleasethepaperasinPhoto3,butsometimesyouwillneedtostretchthefoldedpaperabitasinPhoto4.

Changingdirection

Onceyouhavecompletedthepleating,itisoftennecessarytochangethedirectionoftheverticalfoldsfromamountainfoldtoavalleyfoldorviceversa.ThePleatingDiagramshowstheorientationoftheverticalfoldsafterthepaperhasbeenpleated.Thisisyourstartingpoint.

Foreveryfoldingstep,thereisadiagramthatshowshowthedirectionoftheverticalfoldsforeachsegmentneedstobechanged.Thesediagramsalsoshowthatbychangingthedirectionoftheseverticalfolds,thescoreddiagonallinesinthesegmentwillgettherightorientation.Thescoreddiagonallineswillbecomeamountainoravalleyfoldbychangingthedirectionofthesurroundingverticalfolds.Thediagramforeachfoldingstepshowswhichscoreddiagonallinesareaffected.Thesescoreddiagonallineswillhaveabluecolour(valleyfold)ororangecolour(mountainfold).

Tomaketheprojecttexteasytoread,theinstructionintheprojectdescriptionstellsyoutomountainfoldorvalleyfoldthescoreddiagonallinesineachsegment.Whatyouactuallydoischangethedirectionoftheverticalfoldsthatsurroundthescoreddiagonallinesinthissegment.Whenchangingthedirectionofaverticalfold,frommountaintovalleyorfromvalleytomountain,theactualchangeofthedirectionofthefoldwillhappenattheintersectionbetweenthediagonallinesandtheverticallines.

Itisagoodideatopractisechangingthedirectionofaverticalfoldforapieceofpaperwithmultiplesegmentsbeforestartingtomakeanyoftheprojectsinthisbook.Changingthedirectionofthefoldisdifferentforeveryprojectinthisbook,dependingonthefoldingpattern.Thephotosthatfollowshowyouhowtodothisforthepleatedpapersampleshown,asillustratedinthefoldingdiagrambelow,Diagram1,andthestepphotoswillguideyouthroughwhattodowithyourfingerswhenchangingthedirectionofthefold.

1.Takeyourpreparedpieceofpaper,wherethelineshavebeenscored,pre-foldedandpleatedfollowingthePleatingDiagramopposite.Now,tochangethedirectionofthecentralfoldofthefirstsegmentfromamountaintoavalleyfoldinthebottomareaofthesegment(seeDiagram1opposite),pressdownwithyourindexfingeronthecentralverticallinebelowthediagonalscoredlines.Thecentralverticallineontheothersideofthediagonalscoredlinesneedstostayasamountainfoldandyoucanachievethisbyholdingthispartofthepaperwithyourotherhandasshown.Youwillnoticethatthefirstdiagonalscoredlinewillbecomeamountainfold.

2.Pinchthepartofthecentralscoredverticallineabovethediagonalscoredlinesbetweenyourindexfingerandthumb,whilstsimultaneouslypushingatpointXonthereverseofthepaperwiththeindexfingerofyourotherhand.

3.MoveyourfingeralongtheverticallinefrompointXtothebottomedgeofthepaperasshowntochangethispartoftheverticallinefromavalleytoamountainfold.Youwillnoticethattheseconddiagonalscoredlinewillbecomeamountainfold.

4.Keepallthefoldsabovethescoreddiagonallinesinplacewithonehandasshown,whileusingtheindexfingerofyourotherhandtopressdownonthecentralverticallinebelowthediagonalscoredlinesinthenextsegment,tomakethispartintoavalleyfold.

5.Repeatsteps2and3sothatthefirstfourscoreddiagonallinesofthefirsttwosegmentshavebecomemountainfolds.Twosegmentshavenowbeenfoldedandyoucancompressthefirstsegmentnow(donottrytocompressbothotherwisethepaperwillwrinkle).

6.Repeatsteps1–5toworkyourwayalongthewholelengthofthepaper,compressingsegmentsasyougo.

7.Whenyoureachtheendofthepaper,youcancompressthewholemodel,pressingitfirmlytosharpenallthefolds.Thenreleaseittocreatetheneededfreedomofmovementforthenextfoldingstep,iftheprojectyouareworkingonhasmultiplefoldingsteps,orforassembly.

SlidingKnot

Theslidingknotisusedtosecuretheendsofalengthofcordanditallowsafoldedmodeltobeopenedtoinsertanewbatteryortoreplacealightbulb.

1.Useaholepunchtopunchholesalongtheedgeofthefoldedpieceofpaperfollowingtheinstructionsfortheproject.

2.Threada1metrelengthofcordthroughtheholesandmakeanoverhandknotatoneendofthecord(labelledaonDiagram1).Pulltighttosecure(seeDiagram2).

3.Makeanotheroverhandknotnexttothefirstknot(seeDiagram3).Beforepullingthesecondknottight,threadtheotherendofthecord

(labelledbonDiagram3)throughthesecondknot(seeDiagram4).

4.Slidethesecondknotalongthecordsothatitispositionednexttothefirstknotandpulltheendofthecord(labelledbonDiagram5)throughthesecondknottotighten.Thisenablesyoutoopenandclosethepapermodel.
