Principal’s Message Week 8 Term 2
Congratulations to Jared Frost, Denman Abbo, Archie Clarke, Elijah Love and
Luke Whitty for representing Ben Venue at the State Hockey Championships last
week. The North West Team came a very respectable fourth but more
importantly the boys had a great time.
Archie Clarke was awarded North West ‘Player of the Carnival’ and was also
selected in the NSW State Team to play in Victoria at the National
Championships in August. This is a fabulous achievement and one that was well
deserved.
Congratulations also goes to Jack Coddington and Hugo Fittler for their selection
in the North West Rugby Union side. The boys will compete at the State Championship at
Coffs Harbour in August.
Thank you to Amanda Swain who has given her time to train our school netball and basketball
teams. The netball girls competed against Tenterfield on Thursday 6 June. The girls came
second in a very close match but Amanda was thrilled with their performance. Congratulations
girls!
The Boys Basketball team competed in the North West PSSA Gala Day last Thursday in
Tamworth. For the majority of the team this was their first game ever! They played two games.
They won one and lost one. Mrs Swain was so proud of their efforts. A special
thank you to Julliann Porter who travelled with the team and provided coaching
advice.
Uniform Policy
The draft uniform policy was ratified by the P&C at their last monthly meeting.
This is now in effect.
School Jackets
We have been notified by our supplier that the fabric for our school jackets is no longer
available. We have a limited number left in only a few sizes. Students are able to wear navy
jackets without a logo and these can be purchased from any local retailer. We will be working
closely with local suppliers to find a suitable replacement.
Cross Country
Well done to all the students who participated in last Friday’s Cross Country at Mullaley.
Congratulations to Hugo Fittler, Kairi Takayama and Brodie Meredith who will be
representing Ben Venue at the State carnival.
Armidale Eisteddfod
On Sunday our Senior Choir performed at the Eisteddfod Gala Concert. This was a huge
honour for our school. Thank you to Michelle Porter for her outstanding leadership of the
group and to Anne-Maree Pattison for giving up her time on Sunday to attend with the
students.
Lunches
In the cold weather students tend to eat more. Please check with your child to see if they
require an additional sandwich in their lunch box.

Celebrating International Refugee Week
Refugee Week is an incredible opportunity for the whole nation to celebrate the contribution refugees make to
our society, while raising awareness, remembering and honouring the often perilous journey that refugees
have taken to reach Australia.
At Ben Venue over the past year we have welcomed many refugee families. We currently have three refugee
families at our school. These families have been welcomed by our students, staff and broader community and
are now enjoying the many opportunities our school provides. The insert has some reflections of how our
students, including our refugee students feel about living in Armidale and coming to Ben Venue. The library will
feature several books about refugees for the duration of the week.
I encourage you to follow the link to read some of the interesting stories of other refugee journeys.

1D have had a very busy term so far…
The Library became our classroom in Week 5 and we loved having a larger space to work in and
copious amounts of books to read. However, we are very happy to be back in our classroom that
is looking very fresh with a lovely purple door!
1D have started the Friendology 101 lessons and we’re building our skills in introducing
ourselves and the art of conversation, ‘it’s like a game of catch’. 1D enjoyed learning about the
various types of friendships and that conflict with friends is normal and okay. Soon we'll be
exploring ‘friendship fires’ and building our strategies to put these fires out. Students are very
excited about URSTRONG and love involving our favourite soft toys in our lessons. If your child
has not brought in a soft toy please send one in, this toy will remain in the classroom until the
end of term.
We have had lots of coughs and sniffles in 1D, so if your child is sick please remember rest is the
best medicine.
Eliza Drozdowski
1G enjoyed our time in the library while our classroom was getting painted. However, we
are definitely looking forward to our freshly painted room…
This term we have been trialling an online tool called ‘Plickers’. It allows everyone in our class to
participate in discussions by holding up an individual QR code, which is then scanned using a
mobile phone and records our data in real time. Pretty cool!
We have started our Friendology lessons as part of the school’s UR Strong program and are
looking forward to developing our friendship skills with the assistance of our special stuffies from
home.
It is wonderful to see so many families continuing to value the importance of daily reading. A reminder too that if your child has memorised their current sight words, write a quick note on the home reading record sheet and I will send home a new set of personalised words.

5H
Congratulations to 5H for their confidence and persistence in performing in the Choral Speaking
section at the Armidale Eisteddfod. They were very entertaining and placed 2nd
with their piece
on Mulga Bill’s Bicycle.
In English, students have been learning about World War I, focusing on the Gallipoli landing.
While reading a range of texts, students have been investigating how similes, metaphors and
personification can make a story more interesting and descriptive.
As a part of our Science unit ‘Sustainable Food and Fibre’, students have been investigating
how and why food and fibre are produced in sustainable, managed environments that enable
people to grow and be healthy. On 20 June, we will be going on an excursion to the Arc-en-Ceil
Trout Farm and Nundle Wool Mill. Thank you to all the parents and students who have promptly
returned all of the notes that have been sent home in relation to this excursion.

Netball News
Last Thursday, Ben Venue had a very exciting netball game against Sir Henry Parks Memorial Public School in the 4th round of the PSSA knockout. The girls played exceptionally well and I am so proud of the how far the girls have come this year with their skills and team work. After a hard fought match unfortunately the girls lost 4-6. I would like to thank Taylor Armstrong, Jeanie Inglis, Chloe Inman, Eliza Lawson, Maddie Porter, Eve Robinson, Tailah Smith, Bronte Swain and Sky Vaughan for their commitment and sense of fair play this year. I would also like to thank Sharni Styles for being our umpire and the parents for supporting their daughters. I hope the girls continue netball into the future.

This term Students have been learning to use the rules of photography to create interesting photographic artworks. Their topic was 'Drought'. However, it rained the day we took the photos so some students took advantage of the damp earth as their subject.
