St. Patrick’s Day HistorySt. Patrick’s Day, celebrated
each March 17, marks the date thepatron saint and national apostleof Ireland died, after 40 years ofmissionary work, in 461 A.D.
Legend and myth surround St.Patrick, who was said to havefreed Ireland of snakes, ametaphor illustratingChristianity’s rise over paganism. His use of Ireland’s sacredthree-leaf shamrock to symbolizethe holy trinity is a well-knownstory.
Patricius Magonus Sucatus wasborn around 390 A.D. to Romancitizens in Britain. He waskidnapped by raiders as a teenagerand sold into slavery in Ireland.Toiling as a shepherd, Patrickfound comfort in religion.
After six years, Patrick escaped, journeying home hundreds ofmiles over land and sea. Nowdevout, he studied for thepriesthood, was ordained a bishopand returned to Ireland to spreadChristianity.
In the fifth century, Patrickbuilt churches, ordained priestsand converted thousands of Irishpeople. The wandering bishophad a knack for combiningChristianity and Irish culture, easing the transition for converts. For instance, he superimposed theIrish-revered sun over the
Christian cross, creating theCeltic cross.
A tireless missionary, Patrickwas honored as a saint not longafter his death.
Mike Amici, Executive Director
Not Just LuckyAccording to Irish legend, the

The Last Great Raceon Earth
Every March, while Alaska isstill bitter cold, experiencedmushers and sled dogs race theIditarod, known as The Last GreatRace on Earth. It’s a grueling1,000-mile journey fromAnchorage in the south to Nomein the west that traversesmountains, frozen waterways, andmiles upon miles of snow-packedtundra.
The Iditarod Trail follows asled-dog route first used aroundthe turn of the 20th century todeliver mail and supplies togold-mining towns.
In January and February 1925,an emergency relay of mushersand sled dogs raced 700 miles upthe trail, risking their lives in windchills of 85 degrees below zero todeliver medicine to Nome, whichwas quarantined due to afast-moving outbreak of the lethalrespiratory illness diphtheria.
Today’s popular Iditarod racewas created in 1973 to keep thesled dog tradition going and tohonor those who risked their livesdecades earlier. Each team is madeup of one musher and 12 to 16dogs, usually huskies.
In 2011, John Baker becamethe fastest musher, finishing therace in eight days, 18 hours, 46minutes and 39 seconds. Thosewho reach Nome last, sometimesweeks later, are awarded the RedLantern.
Follow the race in real time atwww.Iditarod.com.
