A Note FromJeanne’s Journal
I’m seriously consideringremodeling my kitchen. While Iknow the styles I like and haveseveral ideas of what I would liketo do, I am uncertain. This is notmy forte. I need an expert to helpme to ensure that I am making thebest decisions and to help guideme through the many steps of thisprocess. I really want someone Ican trust.
I will get recommendations ofcontractors from friends. I will goon line and read reviews. I willinterview contractors and reviewtheir proposals. And when mydecision is finalized, I will haveselected the professional who hasthe most experience and whoI trust.
I believe that selecting anassisted living community holdssome of the same similarities.Obviously the assisted livingdecision is a much moreimportant one but many of theconcerns are the same. When Istarted my career almost 35 yearsago, the assisted living industryhad not yet been born. Even 15years ago, when I came toBelmont Village, this care conceptwas still relatively new. Todaythere are many facilities to choosefrom. So how does one decide?
I think experience matters.
When I make important decisionsI tend to rely on professionalswho have the knowledge andexperience to best guide me. I amproud to have served at BelmontVillage for more than 15 years andto have many years in seniorhealth care and housing prior tocoming here. I am grateful that Ican use these many years ofexperience to help residents, families and staff.
I am also extremely proud ofthe Belmont team and theabsolutely amazing years ofexperience that they have at ourcommunity. Did you know thatwe currently have 20 employeeswho have worked at ourcommunity for more than 5 years? We also have twelve employeeswho joined our team more than10 years ago. In addition, we have9 team members who haveworked at our community formore than 15 years. When youconsider the fact that BelmontVillage opened 16 years ago, theseare remarkable accomplishments. These 41 employees consist ofnurses, PALs, maintenance staff, drivers, concierges, servers, dishwashers, cooks, activitypersonnel and management staff.I am pleased that their longevityand experience touches everyaspect of a resident’s life.

Elizabeth G, Circle of FriendsAbout 3 years ago Elizabeth was sitting in a
classroom working on her degree in humanservices. Sitting beside her in one of her classeswas Belmont Village employee, Gina, ourdining room server. Gina shared with Elizabethwhat a wonderful place Belmont Village is.When we met Elizabeth we all knew she wasmeant to be a part of our family too. Elizabeth’sbackground in Human Services, specializing inolder adults along with her many years of beinga Montessori teacher have come together toserve our residents incredibly well. “I am
a teacher at heart and am ableto bring many of those skills intomy work, but the most valued andhonored piece of my work are therelationships the residents inviteme into daily and the joy we areable to share”. Elizabeth is highlyskilled in her group environment. She is able to engage her group, while also ensuring eachindividual resident remainsengaged at his or her own level. The result is a warm, inviting, andtherapeutic group that continuesto help our residents growand thrive.
“To laugh, listen, hold a handand to look thoughtfully into theeyes and minds of our residents, enriches their life but also myheart and spirit more than I canever express. I feel very honored tohave the love of the residents, butalso the trust of our familymembers to allow me to walkwith their loved one every day. I
am touched and grateful to be acaring support and understandingear for the residents and familymembers. I have found a beautifuldance in my days here with theresidents and fellow staff atBelmont and feel like I am home”.
Elizabeth and Agnes
All are welcome to stop by andenjoy the enthusiasm, love, support and joy of Elizabeth andher group. Elizabeth is awonderful reason as to why life atBelmont is not only thriving, butalso full of enrichment!
Legumes May Lower Type2 Diabetes!
Type 2 diabetes is growing byleaps and bounds throughout theworld. A recent study by the Unitof Human Nutrition at TheUniversities Rovira VirgiliTerragona, Spain, discovered thata diet high in legumessignificantly reduces the risk ofdeveloping the disease.
Legumes consist of plants suchas alfalfa, clover, peas, peanuts, soybeans, chickpeas, and varioustypes of beans. As a group they arevery nutritious because they havehigh levels of vitamin B, whichhelps the body regulatemetabolism and make energy. They are also high in potassium, magnesium and fiber. They arewhat are known to be lowglycemic. This means blood sugarlevels increase slowly after they areconsumed, unlike bread or cornwhich are high glycemic, whichincrease your blood sugar rapidlyafter consumption.
Legumes also comprise avariety of phytochemicals whichprotect the blood vessels againstinflammation.
The study that took place over 4years revealed that individualswho ate legumes 3.35 servings aweek had a 35% less likely chance
of developing type 2 diabetes.Lentils had the strongestassociation with low risk of type 2diabetes. Just replacing half a dailyserving of protein- andcarbohydrate rich foods (bread, potatoes, and rice) with anequivalent serving of legumesreduced the risk of diabetes.

Step Out Into Natureand Walk!
Walking is a recommendedform of exercise, but taking yoursteps outside can benefit yourmind as well as your body.Researchers say that a walk in apark or other naturalsurroundings appears to affect thepart of the brain that controlsbrooding. In a study of peoplewho strolled in a green space, scans showed less activity in thatbrain region, and the walkersreported fewer negative thoughtsand improved mental health.
