A Brief History - David Marshall - Creative Director
Prior to forming SemiStone Media, David Marshall, (Creative Director), was the senior graphic designer at HHC Lewis (formerly Hall Harrison Cowley, owned by Saatchi & Saatchi). His primary role for the last seven years was that of servicing the Emerson account, which involved many ad campaigns, brochures and other marketing materials. This document is intended to help assess the experience and creativity of SemiStone Media, using examples of the design work he produced for Emerson, whilst SemiStone builds its new portfolio, as the company is still very much in its infancy, having registered at Companies House in February 2014.
Emerson company overview
Emerson (NYSE: EMR) is a diversified global manufacturing and technology company, offering a wide range of products and services in the industrial, commercial and consumer markets through their Process Management, Industrial Automation, Network Power, Climate Technologies, and Commercial & Residential Solutions businesses. Recognised widely for their engineering capabilities and management excellence, Emerson has approximately 132,000 employees and 230 manufacturing locations worldwide, with an annual turnover of $24.5 billion.
Few companies can rival Emerson’s steady rise during the last half century to rank among the most innovative and successful industrial enterprises, widely known for their management process, sustained financial performance and operational excellence. What began in 1890 as a single plant producing electric motors and fans in St. Louis, Missouri, has grown into a global technology and solutions provider that meets some of the world’s most significant challenges. Emerson holds prime global market positions in each core business:
Network Power, Process Management, Industrial Automation, Climate Technologies, and Commercial & Residential Solutions. While they drive their achievements with a multitude of sophisticated processes, operations and skills, their fundamental approach follows this simple proposition: ‘Emerson combines the best technology and the world’s greatest human talent to create solutions for the benefit of our customers and the world.’ They succeed by thoughtfully applying this principle to help their customers grow, to improve quality of life and to meet important business and social challenges.
Emerson’s long-term success ultimately depends on their management team’s abilityto maintain their conviction and continually reshape their approach in a dynamic world. The management values and beliefs begin with integrity: ‘We insist on integrity in everything we do.’ In addition, their focus on sustainable business practices and decisions guides their management and approach to social stewardship.

Ad campaigns were regular assignments: David’s task was to research
the service or product and the related market, and then create headlines
with supporting imagery, that targeted USPs to use for the campaign.
On the following pages are examples of advertising that he produced for the Emerson Process Management division, targeting customer pain points and offering solutions through the use of products and services that Emerson offer.

Brochures were also regular assignments: this example was aimed
at improving plant efficiency by reducing energy losses through the
production process.
An image was required to illustrate the focus of the brochure, so ten images were assembled, and then manipulated and amalgamated in Photoshop to produce the front cover image, as seen opposite.

This conference guide was required for the first Global Users Exchange to
be held in Europe, which came about due to the continued success of the
event held annually in the USA.

The Innovations magazine came into being so as to promote the latest
technology that Emerson had developed, aimed at higher management
levels and above..
The requirement was to tone down the Emerson connection, so the normal guidelines were ignored, and a whole new style developed for the magazine, as well as designing a suitable masthead.
The publication proved to be a good marketing tool, and numerous language versions were created, including German, Italian, Spanish and French.

In 2006 a trade stand design was
required for a show in Cairo. On
these pages can be seen the design
mock-ups of the stand, as well as
some of the info graphics created to
be used on the stand, using a style
created for this event.
Emerson were very pleased upon attending the event as they felt that their stand was, by far, the best at the show.
