tsunamis and floods are constant threats making the Philippines one of the most disaster prone countries in

the world.

•Located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, between two tectonic plates (Eurasian and Pacific) which are volcanic and earthquake generators• 20 quakes a day• 22 active volcanoes (5 most active)

Many of the country’s communities are constantly

faced by deadly natural disasters due to global climactic

changes and increasing population.

• Located along the typhoon belt in the Pacific making it vulnerable to typhoons and tsunami•Average of 20 typhoons yearly (7 are destructive)

As an archipelago with 7,107 islands, the threat of tsunamiaffecting the country’s coastalareas is not far-fetched.

For the period January 2004 to June 2005, the country registered :

4,500 deaths

650 missing persons

15 B (PhP) worth of damages

Between 19701970 to 20002000, , the Philippines incurred an average annual direct damage of PHP 15 Billion

or US$ 300 Million due to disasters. This is equivalent to more than 0.5% of the national GDP per year.

The indirect and secondary impacts of these disasters further increased this cost.

The NDCC, together with My Shelter Foundation, United

Architects Philippines and the Private Sector Disaster

Management Network (PSDMN) have taken lead to launch the

“Be Better, Build Better Program.”

2. BUILDING IMPLEMENTATION

DepEd’s Adopt-A-School Program A program that gives private entities the opportunity

to become active partners by providing assistance to various concerns in public education.

The private sector is able to participate in addressing the problems of the public education system such as classroom, desk and textbook deficiencies.

Through this program, the private sector can assist in upgrading and modernizing the Philippine public schools.

The competition’s winning entry or design shall be implemented through DepEd’s Adopt-A-School Program.

3. ADVOCACY

PSDMN will take the lead in the advocacy of the “Be Better, Build Better Program”

PSDMN will help communicate to all its stakeholders the existence of the program and encourage them to support our goal in building an overall disaster resilient country, and for other countries to follow suit.

ConclusionOur country’s geographic location makes us prone to natural hazards

Mitigation and Preparedness remain as the most effective strategies in minimizing adverse effects of disasters

The “Be Better, Build Better Program” will revolutionize the way we build our schools and how we prepare our children
