BAGS adjectives

What do we know about adjectives in French?

• They have to agree in gender and number with the noun they are describing...

Il est blond.

Elle est blonde.

• Il est intelligent.

Elle est intelligente!

• Il est fort.

Elle est forte!

• Ils sont sportifs...

Elles sont sportives.

When the masculine form of the adjective ends in "e" it does not change in the feminine.

• Il est timide.

Elle est timide.

The other important thing we know about adjectives in French is that they usually come after the noun they

are describing.

• un garçon sérieux...

• une fille gentille

les cheveux noirs

un stylo rouge

Sometimes adjectives go before the noun in French....

• these are referred to as BAGS adjectives:

• B- beauty• A- age• G - goodness/greatness• S - size

beauty

• To say someone is goodlooking (handsome) or beautiful, we use the word:

beau

Jacob est un beau garçon.

Notice that beau comes before garçon.

beauty

• The feminine form of beau is:

belle

Bella est une belle fille.Just like with beau, the adjective comes before the noun, because it is describing "beauty."

beauty

• The plural form of beau is:

beaux – for masculine

belles – for feminine

• Regarde les beaux soldats.

• Regarde les belles fleurs.

Since it comes before the noun, it needs a special form for when the noun starts with a vowel...

• C’est un beau arbre. NON!!!

• C’est un bel arbre.

...but only when the vowel starting noun is masculine. In the feminine there is no problem so no special word

is needed....• C’est une belle amie.

– Sounds beautiful.

age

• To say someone is old we use the word:

vieux

Gandalf est un vieux magicien.

age

• But for a feminine noun we use the word

vieille

Elizabeth est une vieille reine.

age• but when followed by a noun that starts with

a vowel, we need a special form of vieux:

vieil

C'est un vieil artiste.

vieux, vieille, vieil, vieux, vieilles

• old

age

• To say something is new we use the word:

nouveau

M. Dupont est un nouveau professeur.

age• When describing a feminine noun, we use the

word:

nouvelle

Mme Bledel est une nouvelle professeur.

age• When describing a masculine noun that starts

with a vowel, we need a special word...

nouvel

J'ai un nouvel ordinateur.

goodness

• The word for good is....

bon

Michael Phelps est un bon nageur.

goodness

• For feminine nouns we use:

bonne

Ethel est une bonne amie.

size

• We already know how to say something is big...

C'est un grand crayon!

C'est une grande fenêtre!

• or small...

C'est un petit livre!

C'est une petite voiture!
