Koenig Engineering Inc. (KEI) is pleased to offer a new line ofcost reduced Turning Gears designed specifically for induced draft, forced draft and hot gas recirculation fan applications. The Turn-ing Gear drive designs incorporate key features utilized in KEI’sproven Gas and Steam Turbine Turning Gears. Over 1000 Turn-ing Gears for gas and steam turbines, compressors and industrialfan applications are in the field, with outputs from 500 ft-lbs to150,000 ft-lbs, at speeds from fractional to 200 RPM. All Turn-ing Gears for fan applications are backed by Koenig’s superiorcustomer support and service.

New and Retrofit Applications

KEI will design a Turning Gear to accompany any new industrialfan installation to provide maximum protection from rotor dam-age. In addition, KEI will custom engineer Turning Gears for anyexisting application, to meet the customer's torque and speed re-quirements, in a surprisingly compact package.

Advanced Design Gives a Compact Size

All Koenig Engineering Turning Gears utilize a Delroyd wormgear reducer in place of helical gears, which gives several advan-tages. Worm gearing allows a large speed reduction in minimalspace, typically reducing the length of the Turning Gear. In addi-tion, the clutch is mounted inside the worm gear housing, whichmeans it takes up no additional space in the overall package. Theclutch is also submerged in the same lubricating oil as the wormgear, reducing maintenance and the number of oil leak paths.

Marland Sprag Freewheel Clutch with Lift Off

In the heart of KEI’s fan drive Turning Gears lies a Marland spragoverrunning clutch with lift off capability. Traditional spragclutches are configured so that the sprags ride directly on the raceat all times, leading to a shorter service life than a lift-off design.Marland RMI series sprag clutches allow the inner shaft to over-run, while lifting the sprags off of the running surfaces eliminat-ing wear points.

The ability to provide lift off on an inner-overrun situation allowsmounting of the clutch inside the worm gear without sacrificingdurability.

Long Service Life with Low Maintenance

Koenig uses only durable components, and sizes them to maxi-mize their service life. Delroyd worm gears have a proven trackrecord, and utilize Mobil SHC Synthetic lubricants, which do notneed replacement nearly as often as conventional oils, while pro-

All Breakaway Torques and Speeds are approximate. Contacta Koenig Engineering representative for exact applicationdata. We can build a Turning Gear of almost any size, to runat almost any speed.

The cage of the Marland sprag overrunning clutch rotateswith the inner race. The special geometry of these spragsfeature an offset center of gravity that will lift-off the innerand outer races while overrunning (due to centrifugal force“F”). Thus, at speed, the sprags do not contact the inner orouter races (clearance dimensions “a” and “b”), preventingwear while overrunning.

1. Solid FoundationOptional soleplate can beembedded in cement, allow-ing simple alignment of theTurning Gear using shims. Finally, the Turning Gear isdoweled and bolted in place. The Standard Support Base(lower diagram) is designedto be grouted in place to makea secure platform.

2. Standard ManualTurning AdapterAll Koenig EngineeringTurning Gears feature amanual turning provision. Ahex drive on the end of theprimary shaft allows manualrotation of the Turning Gearand fan for maintenance andinspection.

An optional PneumaticTurning Kit, available fromKEI, utilizes an air driventorque wrench for more con-venience and speed than amanual torque wrench. Seethe KEI website for more in-formation on this option.

3. Backstop ClutchCertain applications run therisk of reverse rotating theTurning Gear. To prevent re-verse rotation, and subsequentdamage to the Turning Gear,KEI offers two means of pro-tection: a backstop clutch onthe worm shaft, and a shearpin coupling. Should reverserotation occur, the backstop

clutch will hold the TurningGear in place. If the reversetorque reaches the maximumallowable, the disposable cou-pling pins will shear, discon-necting the coupling halves, and protecting the TurningGear from damage.

4. Kop-Flex GearCouplingThe standard Kop-Flex gearcoupling used to connect theTurning Gear to the fan shaftcan accommodate angularand parallel misalignment, inaddition to a significantamount of axial growth.

5. Marland Lift OffSprag ClutchThis design permits thesprags to lift off the inner andouter races once the drivenmember is at speed, virtuallyeliminating clutch wear. Thecompact size of the clutch al-lows mounting inside of theworm gear housing.

6. Gear/Clutch OilLevel Sight GlassThe oil level in the worm gearhousing is visible at all timeseven when running, throughthe sight glass. The clutch isenclosed in the same housingas the worm gear, and is sub-merged in the same lubricant, minimizing maintenanceand providing a substantialreservoir of lubricant, and alarge heat sink for the clutch.
