AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT

OBJECTIVES:

a. differentiate, defining, characteristic of authentic and traditional assessment,

b. design an engaging task appropriately aligned with a learning standard; and

c. critic the criteria and levels of performance of a rubric developed.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT

Is an evaluation process that involves multiple forms of performance measurement reflecting the student’s learning, achievement, motivation, and attitudes on instructionally-relevant activities.

Students are asked to perform real world tasks that demonstration meaningful application of essential knowledge and skill.

TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENT

Traditional assessments are tests given to the

students by the teachers to measure how much the students have learned. Traditional assessment tests contain

different types of questions such as: multiple-choice, fillins, matching, essays, and sentence completions etc. This type of assessment is not the only way

nor the best way to evaluate students, but is the most common way because it provides valuable info. about the students learning.

HOW IS AUTHENTIC SIMILAR TO/ DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENT?

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT

a school’s mission is to develop productive citizens.

To be a productive citizen, an individual must be capable of performing meaningful task in the real world.

therefore, schools must help students become proficient at performing the tasks they will encounter.

To determine if it successful, the school must then ask the students to perform meaningful tasks that replicate real world challenges to see if students are capable of doing so.

TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENT

A school mission is to develop productive citizens.

To be a productive citizen, an individual must possess a certain body of knowledge and skills.

Therefore, schools must teach this body of knowledge and skills.

To determine if it is successful the school must then test students to see if they acquired the knowledge and skills.

Journals Portfolios Rubrics

JOURNALS

Student’s written collection of student’s reflections on learning

Use their journal to record their feelings about a particular assignment.

Describe what they learned from a project.

To explain why they did or did not think a test was fair.

PORTFOLIOS

Is a collection of a student’s work that represents the best of his learning efforts

Test papers, essays, diagrams, art projects, audiotapes of musical performances, videotapes of drama productions, computer programs.

RUBRICS

Is a scoring key. Teachers create and use rubrics to help

assess how well students have grasped important aspects of learning activities.

Story or text retelling Writing sample Projects/ exhibitions Constructed – response items Teacher observations Oral interview

THE FOLLOWING STEPS HOW TO CONSTRUCT A RUBRICS

Step 1. review the standards that the product or

performance is meant to address.Step 2. establish or review the criteria that will be

used to judge the student’s product or performance and make sure they match the standards.

Steps 3. Design the frame by deciding on the major

categories the rubric will address

Steps 4. Describe the different levels of

performance that match each criterion. Be sure to choose words or phrases that show the actual differences among the levels. Make sure they are observable.

WHAT DO I NEED TO REMEMBER?

EDUCATION MUST BE INFORMED BY CRITICAL THOUGHT AND APPLIED KNOWLEDGE

A basis for the increased role of authentic assessment in classroom use is the belief that education is not simply a matter of memorization but must be informed by critical thought and connected and applied knowledge.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT ALLOWS FOR MEASURING MEANINGFUL AND VALID TASKS

Authentic assessment can be a learning experience used in the context of students working on problems, projects, or products that genuinely engage and motivate them to do well

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT ALLOWS FOR LEARNER-SPECIFIC EVALUATION

Traditional is often criticized for focusing on the disconnectedness between the limited range of skills taught in the classroom and what the student will face in the real world.

Teacher s evaluate students is open to criticism on these grounds, as lacking validity and reliability.

SELF- ASSESSMENT IS BUILT INTO AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT TASKS

Asks students to examine their strengths and weakness and to set their own goals to further their learning.

Students makes choice in setting goals about their learning, achievement can increase, when choice is absent, achievement can decrease.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT IS CRITERION-REFERENCED, AS OPPOSED TO NORM-REFERENCED

Criterion-referenced assessment designed to compare students performance against learning task standards.

Norm- referenced tests are designed to compare a student performance against that of other students

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION ARE NOT THE SAME THING.

Assessment a method for following student’s advancement and demands the participation of the learner.

Formative assessment is done in an informal, sustained way to help students with their learning and help teachers improve their teaching

Evaluation is seen making a judgment about a student’s advancement and can include self evaluation

Teacher must develop plans for following student’s progress while insuring appropriate data gathering methods are employed that allow for evaluation through grading and percentage of students achieving standards
