IntroductionHi,mynameisJonathanManzoney,orto99%ofthisworldJono.I’vebeenacoachforover12years,havingcoachedathletesfromtheagesof8yearsto38yearsold.Thisincludesalllevelsofseniorcoachingfrom19’stoSenior’s,whereIhavehelpedbuildclubsandtheirlistsfromthebottomup.Ihavebeenabletodothisthroughpositivecommunicationandplayerdevelopment,whichhasculminatedwithpremiershipsatseniorlevel.IhaveworkedintheprivatesectorinplayerdevelopmentandcoachmentorprogramsandfinallyintheTACcupsystem,bothastheheadcoachofaHighPerformanceAcademyaswellasmultiplerolesintheU/18’ssystem.Alongthispath,IhavegainedmyAFLlevel2,aDiplomaofManagement,BachelorofSportsCoaching,SportsScienceandamcurrentlyhalfwaythroughmyMastersofTeaching.Having worked with a broad range of players both in age groups and diversity I have come to manyconclusions over the years. Nonemore than this, we can all teach our players somuch better thanwecurrentlyare.However it’smybelief thatascoachesweneedtoputonequestionto the forefrontofourminds,“HowcanIteachplayerstoimprove?”ThroughseniorandTACcupsystemsIhavecoachedplayerswhohadeliterunningabilities,theycouldruntimesunder10minutesfora3kmtimetrialora14+beeptest,buttheiringamekickingefficiencywaslessthan50%.I’vehadkidsthatatage14couldnothitastationarytargetwithahandpassandyethadbeenplayingformostoftheirlife.ButmorethananythingIseeplayerswhoaremissingkeyunderstandingsofgameknowledge,ataneducatedguessthiswouldequateto50%plusofplayers.WhenItalkaboutkeyunderstandingIamtalkingbasicgameunderstanding.Nearlyallplayersfromages8to18understandbasicoffense,buttheoppositeexistsfordefense.Manyplayershavelittleawarenessofhowtoworkincongestionor“traffic”inagame.In“traffic”understandingisaskillthatallinvasionsportslikeAFLshoulddevelopineachplayer.Thisoccursbecauseascoacheswetendtohaveafixedmindset,thatthisplayerisagoalkickerorthisoneamidfielder.OftenIwillcoachaplayerwhowastoldhewasafullforwardat11becausehewastallerthantheotherkids,bythetimehereaches14theyhaveallcaughtupandhewantstogivefootballawaybecausehehasn’tdevelopedthekeyunderstandingskillsofdefenseorhowtoplayasamidfielder.Totrulydevelopplayers,itisourjobascoachestoensureallplayersareexposedtoavarietyofpositionsonthegroundtodeveloptheirownunderstandingofhowtoattackanddefend,oneonone,inspaceorcongestion.MynameisGarryRamsayandIhavebeeninvolvedinCoachingFootballfor25years.IhaveCoachedAuskick,Junior,Representative,DevelopmentandSeniorTeams.Withmywell-educatedfriend,JonoManzoney,wehaveputtogetherthisPresentationtohelpeducateCoachesofallagegroupsandincreasetheRetentionandParticipationofCoachesandPlayersinFootball.
