Mole, Particle, and Mass Conversions
Austin High School ChemistryMs. Lizette Gutierrez
The mole
Avogadro’s number (a constant) tells us how many representative particles are in 1 mole of anything! The number of particles in exactly 1 mole is
6.022 x 1023. This is Avogadro’s number. There are 12 of anything in one dozen The mole is a counting system just like the
dozen There are 602,200,000,000,000,000,000,000
of anything in one mole.
Representative Particles
Depending on the substance, the representative particles are called different things. Look at the chart
below.
Types of Substances Representative Particle
Element Atom
Molecular Compound (covalent) Molecules
Ionic Compound Fomula Units

Mole Mass (g) Conversion Example #3
Aluminum is often used for the structure of light-weight bicycle
frames. How many grams of Al are in 3.00
moles of Al?
Mass (g) Mole Conversion Example #2
You and your friend discover a buried treasure in your back yard. You find a pure
elemental gold (Au) bar. The total weight for the gold bar
is 2500 grams. How many moles of gold (Au) did you
find?

Prozac, C17H18F3NO, is a widely used
antidepressant that inhibits the uptake of
serotonin by the brain. How many moles of
Prozac does a sample of 550 grams of Prozac
contain?
The artificial sweetener aspartame (Nutra-Sweet) formula C14H18N2O5 is used
to sweeten diet foods, coffee and soft drinks. How many grams of aspartame are present in 3.43 moles
of aspartame?
