HISTORY CORNER
Did you know……...In 1912 the uniform of officers
attending the State Convention was comprised of a
Mexican-style suit of purple wool with borders of Elk
heads in white, white shoes and large straw sombreros,
costing a total of $12.00. It was changed to purple
jackets trimmed in white, white slacks and a soft white
hat.
The first Life Member was Brother W. H. Blair.
Member ship for 1913 was 372.
EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE
Greetings & Salutations, members,
If you missed the “Red Neck” dinner last month,
sorry, you missed out on a great event. It was
wonderful to have the dining room so full with people having
a good time. The brews offered that night will be on tap
throughout October.
The Fall Seminar will be held on the 13th, 14th and 15th. We
can use some volunteers to help at the Lodge. There will not
be a meeting on the 13th, but the Lodge will be open for
meals.
Check your bulletin; we are planning a chili and cornbread
cook off on the 28th of October. Come on down and vote for
your favorite. The kids’ Halloween Party is on Saturday the
29th, and Trick or Treat on Main Street is on Monday,
October 31st.
As always, the Lodge will be having a booth where candy and
drug awareness information will be handed out. Volunteers
are always welcome, and it is always a lot of fun watching the
kids in their costumes.
Don’t forget about Chuckwagon Breakfast. It is at the Lodge
again, come down and have a great breakfast at a great price.
As you know our lodge dinners are cooked by volunteers.
They are doing an outstanding job and putting out great
dinners. But, there are not enough of them and we could sure
use more volunteers to help. It is not as hard as it sounds, and
we can show you how to use all the equipment and give you
all the support you need. If you have a family recipe that you
would like to share, this would be a great venue. Get a small
group together and come down and show off your specialty.
If we can get enough volunteers, maybe we can be open a few
Saturdays a month.
If you have ever considered being an officer in the lodge, this
is the time to start seriously thinking about it. It is an
opportunity to help influence the direction the Lodge is
moving. It takes some dedication, but it has its rewards.
Elk of the Month for October is Pat Andrews. She is one of
our star chefs in the kitchen, and always donates terrific
afghans at the charity auction and other events. Pat is very
active in the auxiliary, bingo, and any other event that we need
help with. If there is something happening
at the lodge, you can bet that Pat is there
helping.
The honored Veteran of the Month is
George Johnston. At the time of this
bulletin, I did not have a bio.
LEADING KNIGHT’S CORNER
Fellow Elks and others reading this,
A man hears from his doctor that his end is near so
he heads over to a lawyer to write a will. The
secretary watches as the man walks into the
lawyer’s office and three minutes later as the man leaves in a
huff. “Can I help you?” asks the secretary, dashing after the
obviously upset man. “HELP ME? THIS GUY IS CRAZY! I
asked him to help me write a will and he says to me: ‘sure, let me
ask you a few questions and then leave everything to me.’ “I’ve
heard before how lawyers are dishonest but this just takes the
cake!”
This is the fifth in a series of articles regarding our GREAT
Organization.
FAMOUS ELKS
Although the original Elks were actors and entertainers,
members of other professions soon joined the organization.
Today’s Elks represent just about the full spectrums of
occupations in America. Throughout the course of the Order’s
history, many celebrities from the entertainment field, business
and public service have been Brother Elks.
Presidents Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S.
Truman, and John Kennedy were all Elks. Former President
Gerald Ford belonged to the Grand Rapids Lodge No. 48, where
his father served two terms as Exalted Ruler. Many members of
Congress have been Elks, too. Former Speakers of the House Tip
O’Neill, Carl Albert, John McCormick and Sam Rayburn all
belonged to the Fraternity. Former Speaker Tom Foley belonged
in nearby Spokane. Hale Boggs of Louisiana was also an Elk.
General John “Blackjack” Pershing, American general and hero
of the First World War, hailed from New York Lodge No.1 as a
lifelong member. 70,000 Elks served in the First World War;
approximately 1,000 gave their lives in the service of our
country. 100,000 Elks served in World War II, over 1,600 made
the supreme sacrifice for American freedom.
Entertainers Lawrence Welk, Will Rogers, Jack Benny and Andy
Devine were Brother Elks, too. Brother Devine served as Exalted
Ruler of San Fernando Lodge No. 1539. And Brother Clint
Eastwood is a member of Monterrey Lodge No. 1285. William
F. Cody, better known as “Buffalo Bill” was also a Brother Elk.
From the sports world, the Order has counted among its
members the likes of Vince Lombardi, Casey Stengel, Mickey
Mantle, Whitey Ford and Jim Finks.
The beauty of the BPOE is that you don’t have to be rich or
famous to be a member. In fact, it is ordinary people that keep
the Elks thriving, people just like you and me. I want to issue a
challenge to every member of Oregon City
Lodge No. 1189, and that challenge is for you
and every other member of our Lodge to propose
one friend or family member to become a
member of our Lodge. Doubling the
membership sounds impossible but if each of

ALL WHO USE THE ELKS LODGE PARKING LOT:
Please check each time you park to see that your vehicle is accurately
located between the lines in the space you are using. We have so few
spaces that taking two spaces is discourteous. Also, some of you may

actually a space for a small car. So don’t overlap when you
park in the second space.
Many of our patrons are elderly and it’s difficult and dangerous for them to
walk all the way from the overflow parking lot. Thank you for your

LECTURING KNIGHT’S CORNER
Hello everyone.
Allow me to continue with the “guess the famous
Elk” series we started last month. As a reminder
I will share a brief biography of a current or past Elk and let
you guess who it is, are you ready?
This month’s Elk honoree was born in the state of New York
in 1882. He grew up in a family of privilege, graduating
from Harvard and went on to be the governor of his home
state. He later became the 32nd President of the United States.
Alright history buffs, yes - you know who our famous Elk is;
for the rest of us let’s continue on.
He entered the oval office during the Great Depression. He
offered Americans a ‘New Deal”; and created numerous
agencies that still exist today, most noticeably the Social
Security Administration.
Americans would gather around their radios and listen to his
fireside chats, galvanizing the populace at a time when hope
seemed so far away. He cited, “when you reach the end of
your rope, tie a knot into it and hang on”. And of course
what many say is his most famous quote, “the only thing we
have to fear – is fear itself”.
The only President to be elected four times, he moved our
country from the soup lines and grew America into the world
power it remains today. Yes we are discussing Franklin
Delano Roosevelt, or to the common man FDR.
Elk’s continue to remain proud of our history and our
members. Invite a friend to join our efforts to assist our
community.
Howdy, Y’all,
This past summer I had the pleasure of
traveling to the Napa Valley wine country.
We took the route from Oregon City to Grants Pass and
headed toward the California coast. During our travels
through the Redwoods, we came upon a wildlife
preserve for Roosevelt elk. It is a rather large herd, but
elusive at the time we were observing them. It got me
thinking about our order and the reasoning behind why
we call ourselves Elks. Not just Elks, but the
Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
Elk are one of the largest members of the deer family
(the moose is the largest) and were nearly driven to
extinction by early settlers. Conservations efforts have
been successful in returning them from the brink of
extinction. There seems to be some similarities between
the wild elk and those of us at the Lodge. First of all,
they are a herd animal. The dominant– subordinate
behavior of elk within the cow-herd and with the bull-
group manifests little violence but is firmly established.
Leadership by mature elk cows exists in the majority of
observed situations. Besides pasturing, the elk spend
much time and energy in play, bathing and wallowing.
Vocal communications are frequent and conspicuous.
Aggregations of several hundred elk are frequently seen
but also medium and small elk bands are also found.
With all that information, it looks as though the decision
to call our order “Elks” was appropriate. I thought
about the other options—bears, tigers, wolves and none
seemed to fit us. I also considered cougars, but that
would have been an exclusive group of women over 40
who prey on younger men.

SCHOLARSHIP REPORT
It is time for Most Valuable Students to start the scholarship
application process. The applications are available for download
from the elks.org web page. Each student will need to download
their own application, as they have a unique identifier on the
forms. Photocopies of the application for use by multiple
students will not be accepted. The deadline for the scholarship
applications is November 30.
I am sending out letters to school counselors in the area to remind
them of this great scholarship opportunity for their students and
remind them that they do not have to have an Elk connection in
order to apply. If you know of a high school senior be sure to
pass along this information.
As always, if there are any questions I can be reached through

SCHOLARSHIP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We need to have volunteers to help the Scholarship chairman.
This is an important committee and our lodge has been very
supportive of this program. In order to keep a good chair
person, we need to have help contacting the schools, writing
bulletin articles, getting information to the media and much
more, in addition to judging students.
This committee does not work all year but there is a fair
amount of activity from September til January. Please contact
me if you would be willing to help. I can be reached at
bpx2@comcasst.net, home 503-656-7813 or cell 503-781-
5485.

THE CORDIALS
Greetings all you Cordials,
We missed four of you at the September meeting, so that
left only eight of us in attendance. Surely hope we can all
make it for the October 6th meeting, as it is election of
officers and dues month. It is also the month that we make
our Scholarship donation! So let’s all be there! The
meeting was called to order by President Del Breed and the
minutes and treasurer’s report were read and approved.
Under unfinished business the secretary reported that one
toaster had been purchased for $40 for the Elks Park
kitchen and we were refunded $35. It was a good thing
because that Sunday the old toaster blew up!! That’s what
is called good timing!! It was felt that there was really no
need for a second toaster at this time. The drawing for the
50/50 pot resulted in Willie Cook being the big winner.
We enjoyed lunch, visiting and cards after lunch. See you
