Julie Kane will
visit the Ascension
Parish Library in
Gonzales on Tuesday,
June 25, at 6 PM, to
read from her
collection of poetry
and discuss the
comeback of rhyme in
contemporary poetry.
Louisiana’s Poet
Laureate Kane, is the
third poet to hold the
position in the current
peer-selection process
overseen by the
Louisiana Endowment
for the Humanities
and governed by State
of Louisiana Statutes.
Kane, a native of
Boston and a longtime
resident of Louisiana, holds degrees from
Cornell University, Boston University, and
Louisiana State University. At Boston
University, she was one of Anne Sexton’s
graduate poetry students. By the time she
was twenty-two, she had won first prize in
the college poetry competition sponsored by
Mademoiselle magazine and was the first
woman awarded the George Bennett
Fellowship in Writing at Phillips Exeter
Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. In 1976, she moved to
Baton Rouge and later to New Orleans where she fell in love
with the culture, the music, the food, the festivals, and especially
the rich blend of ethnic traditions. In 1991, she began work on a
doctorate in English at Louisiana State University and later
moved to St. Gabriel, where she found it easier to work without
the city’s distractions. Since 1999, she has lived in Natchitoches,
where she is a Professor of English at Northwestern State
University.
Kane has six books including three collections of
poetry, one volume of non-fiction, and two edited anthologies.
Poet Maxine Kumin chose Kane’s Rhythm & Booze (2003) as
her selection for the National Poetry Series, and the book went
on to become one of the four finalists for the 2005 Poets’ Prize.
Kane’s third poetry collection, Jazz Funeral (2009) was David
Mason’s selection for the Donald Justice Poetry Prize. Presently,
she is at work on her fourth collection of poems, a volume of
light verse to be titled No-Win Situations.
If you have a passion for poetry or would simply enjoy
a delightful evening with Louisiana’s Poet Laureate, Julie Kane,
call the library today at 647-3955 to reserve a seat.
Ascension Parish Library is sad to announce that the last of the original Ascension Parish Library Board members, Marcus A. "Mac" Boudreaux, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2013.
As one of the founding library board members, Mr. Boudreaux was instrumental in the creation of the Ascension Parish Library in 1960. In fact, he secured the first location for the Gonzales branch. He served on the Ascension Parish Library Board of Control from 1960 to 1982. In his 22 years of service on the Library Board, Mr. Boudreaux served as Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Parliamentarian.
When he became a Library Board member, the library was located in rental facilities. When he retired from the Library Board, the library was located in two beautiful parish owned facilities, reflecting his stewardship of the community’s public library.
After 1982, Mr. Boudreaux remained a strong advocate for the Ascension Parish Library and continued to offer his support for the growing public library system he helped to start.
At the 2010 dedication of the Dutchtown location, Mr. Boudreaux was introduced as a founding member of the library board and recognized for his many years of outstanding service.
Mr. Boudreaux’s legacy, his long and devoted support of this public library, has and will impact Ascension Parish for generations.

Edward “Kid” Ory and his band created the first
African American New Orleans jazz recordings ever
made. Who was Kid Ory? Join us at the Ascension Parish
Library in Gonzales on Thursday, June 20, at 6:30 PM, as
John McCusker, biographer, and longtime
photojournalist, addresses this question and many others
about this young man who was raised on a rural sugar
cane plantation and changed the world with his music.
Creole Trombone: Kid Ory and the Early Years of
Jazz boosts the reputation of Edward “Kid” Ory - a
trombonist, composer, recording artist, and an early New
Orleans jazz band leader - as a key player in the evolution
of jazz. This book tells Ory’s story from birth in a French-
speaking ethnically mixed family on Woodland Plantation
in LaPlace, Louisiana, to his emergence in New Orleans
as the city’s hottest band leader. According to McCusker,
“Ory played what he called soft ragtime, but today we know it
as jazz.” The Ory band featured such future jazz stars as Louis
Armstrong and Joe “King” Oliver. Later Ory moved to Chicago
where he made records with Oliver, Armstrong, and Jelly Roll Morton that
captured the spirit of the jazz age.
Following the author’s presentation, there will be a book signing and a
special performance by the Dutchtown High School Jazz Band led by Mr.
Eric Stewart who will perform during a reception as a tribute to Kid Ory
and the pioneers from the early years of jazz. For more information, or to
register, please call the library at 647-3955.
Spend “An Evening with Ruth Williams,” a self-taught artist and LSU graduate from right
here in South Louisiana. In 2004, Williams was awarded an Artist Residency Fellowship at
the Vermont Studio Center. The Vermont Studio Center, located in Johnson, Vermont, is
the largest international artists’ and writers’ residency program in the United States.
Williams’ work, which has been displayed and sold as far away as New York City, is
characterized by vibrant colors, and often features hearts, flowers, and angels as focal
points. She’ll be on hand at Ascension Parish Library in Donaldsonville to share the
inspirations behind her most beautiful works. In addition, learn about her many travels and
longing to spread joy and light throughout the universe. It all happens on Thursday, June
20 at 6 PM. Registration is required, and seating is sure to go quickly. Call 473-8052 to
reserve your spot, today!

What do these names have in common: Betsy, Camille, Katrina,
Rita, Andrew, and Gustav? They are all deadly storms that have affected
our battered, yet resilient state of Louisiana. What do we have in store
for us this hurricane season? Jay Grymes, Chief Meteorologist for
WAFB Channel 9, gives us a preview of what is expected for the
upcoming 2013 hurricane season at the Ascension Parish Library –
Galvez on Monday, June 3 at 7 PM.
Grymes quotes Ben Franklin with “Some people are weatherwise,
but most are otherwise.” Become one of the weatherwise, more
specifically, hurricanewise today, by calling the library at 622-3339 to
register for this very informative program.
Unfortunately, polls find that about half of Americans living in coastal
areas are unprepared for a hurricane disaster. Anyone living along the Gulf
Coast should be prepared during hurricane season. Hurricane damage results
from three primary causes: Storm Surge. Approximately 90% of all hurricane
deaths can be attributed to the storm surge, the dome of water created by the low
pressure center of a hurricane. This storm surge quickly floods low-lying coastal
areas with anywhere from 3 feet (one meter) for a category one storm to over 19
feet of storm surge for a category five storm. Wind Damage. The strong, at least
74 mph or 119 km/hr, winds of a hurricane can cause widespread destruction
far inland , destroying homes, buildings, and infrastructure. Freshwater
Flooding. Hurricanes are huge tropical storms and dump many inches of rain
over a widespread area in a short period of time. This water can engorge rivers
and streams, causing hurricane-induced flooding.
The unique sound recovery process makes
a high-resolution digital map of the disc or,
in many cases, a cylinder. This map then
goes through further processing to remove
skips, scratches and other noises. Finally,
the system uses special software that
calculates the motion of a stylus moving
through the disc or cylinder’s grooves,
reproducing the audio and saving it as a
standard digital sound file.
The continuing effort to recover and
restore Bell’s old Volta discs is part of an
ongoing project to preserve and catalog the
museum’s collection of early recordings,
while also increasing public access to the
collection’s contents. The Smithsonian
says that the content of these old
recordings, and the distinctive old physical
discs and cylinders, provide unique insight
into the invention process of these 19th-
century labs and speech patterns of the late
19th century.

Telephone Inventor’s Voice Heard in Restored
Recording Voice of America
A 128-year-old voice recording made by
Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the
telephone, has been recovered by
Washington, D.C.’s Smithsonian
Institution. Although the voice on the
restored recording sounds a bit faint with
some hiss and noise in the background, it is
now possible to hear Bell speak for the
first time. Before the restored
recordings were made
available, no one knew what
the inventor sounded like.
The sound of the inventor’s
voice comes from the
National Museum of
American History‘s
collection of 200 recordings
from Bell’s Volta Laboratory
that are among some of the
earliest sound recordings
ever made.
Researchers also found a loose piece of
paper containing what appears to be a
written transcript of Bell’s recording. The
transcript, which is signed by Bell, ends
with the words, “in witness whereof, hear
my voice, Alexander Graham Bell.” It was
paired with a recently identified “wax-on-
binder-board disc” with the initials “AGB”
and the same date, April 15, 1885, etched
into its surface.
The recording was made using a non-
invasive optical sound recovery process
on Library of Congress equipment that was
developed by the Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory. The researchers were
able to positively identify Bell’s voice by
matching the audio on the old disc with the
written transcript.
“Identifying the voice of Alexander
Graham Bell—the man who brought us
everyone else’s voice—is a major moment
in the study of history,” said John Gray,
director of the museum. “Not only will this
discovery allow us to further identify
recordings in our collection, it enriches
what we know about the late 1800s—who
spoke, what they said, how they said it—
and this formative period for
experimentation in sound.”
Along with identifying the
inventor’s voice, the museum
also identified the voice of
Bell’s father, Alexander
Melville Bell, from a wax-
coated drum recording made
in September, 1881. Partially
quoting Shakespeare’s
“Hamlet,” the elder Bell said
on the recording, “There are
more things in heaven and
earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in our
philosophy.” He went on to say, “I am a
graphophone, and my mother was a
phonograph.”
In 1881, concerned about a possible patent
war with rival inventors, Alexander
Graham Bell placed the recording, along
with the machine that made the recording,
at the Smithsonian so that they could be
used as proof in the event of any litigation.
In 2002, the Lawrence Berkeley Lab came
up with the idea of using a non-invasive
optical technique to scan and recover
sounds.

FDR and the Jews
973.917 BRE Richard Breitman and
Allan J. Lichtman
Nearly seventy-five years after World War
II, a contentious debate lingers over
whether Franklin Delano Roosevelt turned
his back on the Jews of
Hitler’s Europe.
Defenders claim that FDR
saved millions of potential
victims by defeating Nazi
Germany. Others revile
him as morally indifferent
and indict him for keeping
America’s gates closed to
Jewish refugees and failing to bomb
Auschwitz’s gas chambers. In an extensive
examination of this impassioned debate,
Richard Breitman and Allan J. Lichtman
find that the president was neither savior
nor bystander. In FDR and the Jews, they
draw upon many new primary sources to
offer an intriguing portrait of a
consummate politician, compassionate but
also pragmatic, struggling with opposing
priorities under perilous conditions.
